Guest JohnB Posted December 20, 2023 Report Posted December 20, 2023 I have a RV that is constructed like a fiberglass egg or a boat hull. There is no metal ground plane to sit an antenna upon on the roof. I do have a way to attach a mast on the rear spare tire mount. Can anyone recommend a good GMRS antenna I can attach to a mast were a ground plane is not an option? I have a Wouxun 50watt radio. Thanks! Quote
wayoverthere Posted December 20, 2023 Report Posted December 20, 2023 Yes, some companies make antennas that don't require a ground plane; i'm partial to Laird. The main thing is that it covers the 462-467 range with sufficient bandwidth (the one linked covers 450-470mhz) https://theantennafarm.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=3236 WRXB215 and WRUU653 2 Quote
bd348 Posted December 20, 2023 Report Posted December 20, 2023 This may work to mount a non-ground plane antenna onto the root with a mag mount, assuming you can find a flat spot 4" across. Remove for travel. TAF DISC3.5 They have other sizes for mag mount and also through mount. You could use one of the larger ones for a ground plane if you are willing to drill a hole. Quote

It’s capable of being mast mounted and durable enough for mobile use. https://shop.mygmrs.com/collections/antennas/products/nagoya-nmo-200c-dual-band-nmo-antenna There are several mounts there as well, including bracket style mounts for your mirror or ladder. Here is a mount that might work: https://shop.mygmrs.com/collections/antennas/products/nagoya-rb-100n-nmo-drill-and-bracket-mount-kit WRUU653 and WRXB215 2 Quote
nokones Posted December 20, 2023 Report Posted December 20, 2023 Try a Laird B4502N 1/2 wave non-ground plane 2.4 dB omni antenna tuned/trimmed for 465.0 MHz. PCTel/Maxrad MUF4502 is another antenna to consider. wayoverthere 1 Quote
WRZF838 Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 Scamp? Casita? Escape? You could take a leaf from the Hams, get a telescoping flag mast, throw an antenna on the tip, zip tie it to the tongue jack and run it up to full height. There was a post earlier this year about Oliver making it into a Ham magazine can take a peek at some of their pics of setups. https://www.fiberglassrv.com/forums/f83/amateur-radio-and-the-fiberglass-life-100625.html Quote
gortex2 Posted December 21, 2023 Report Posted December 21, 2023 I ran the Laird FG4600 mounted to my ladder on the back for over 15 years. IT was still lower than the AC unit on the roof. Would switch from mobile to the repeater when i got on site. Quote
GreggInFL Posted December 27, 2023 Report Posted December 27, 2023 What would one suggest for an Airstream? Is this the other extreme, a ground plane motherload? Quote
gortex2 Posted December 28, 2023 Report Posted December 28, 2023 I'd run a 1/4 wave basic antenna on a air stream personally. My CTC ran one and it worked perfect. SteveC7010 1 Quote
