Why get upset when these "news" organizations are just opinion spreaders with nothing related to factual news and all should be taken with a grain of salt. I can handle their opinions as a source of curiosity even if I disagree with them. Bottom line, repeater usage should be civil and respectful..

Opinions and Bias is two different matters.............In other words, why listen to someone else's opinion forced upon me..  NOPE!

That's just it, I agree with you, but..... It's not about us. Trust me, do you think I enjoy the direction our society is going? Nope! But I'm just along for the ride like most people. I've learned long ago to accept the fact that we have to deal with people that are just simply unhappy with their life and they expect everyone around them to be just as miserable. I've always lived by the simple rule, "If I don't have a financial or emotional investment in your ass, I won't allow you to get a rise out of me." That said, the manufacturer of my radios installed some really neat controls that most people never learned how to use properly. They are called an ON/OFF switch and that highly advanced channel selector. If I don't like the content or rules on a repeater I can simply turn my radio off or move to another repeater. And frankly, I have nothing to gain by trying to hold an intelligent political conversation with someone of an opposing viewpoint because neither of us most likely won't be swayed by simple logic. If I have to it will be in person. We've all heard the drunken hams on HF. I surely don't want that on any repeater so I would just move on if it was there.

I actually tried the off switch or channel button/knob argument with one owner but he doesn't want the content on it, period.  I've also used that with regular users and they are stuck with it because I won't back down unless it's the owner's rule.  And it's not because I want to or expect to change anyone's political view - they can listen if they want to.  It's for those of us who think alike and are concerned to be able to keep each other informed and discuss options.

I don't think anyone disagrees on that (we don't want CB crap).  But should it include censorship?  I think FCC regs should be it for open repeaters.  Then private repeaters can control content.  But with so few frequencies in GMRS, I'm not convinced there should be private use.

What's left?  Trip to the doctor?  What you had for supper?  Playing ham games?  A boring check-in net?

Those echo-chamber repeaters are the best!

I don't care what you call it.  It's whether it's useful to me that matters.  I've heard that echo-chamber criticism a lot on forums and social media.  And that derogatory, judgemental label is meaningless to me.

I totally agree 100% with you if it were my repeater and the activity didn't break FCC rules. The problem is it isn't my repeater. You gotta take the path of least resistance. And yes, I am totally against all forms of censorship.

That's how you can tell its an echo-chamber.

Anyway - back on topic: On MY repeater, and the club-repeater that we used to have, we had ONE rule: NO discussion of religion or politics.  The reason is because everyone knows that nothing good can ever come of it - NOBODY's mind will suddenly be changed, and generally (99% of the time) it just degenerates into name calling/anger/stupidity/ranting - 100% of the time nothing constructive comes out of it.

On my repeater when this occurs the repeater gets put into what we call "F-Off mode" - which is a nice way of saying it gets remotely powered-off.

This is very true and why politics are not allowed on our repeaters. And the name calling/anger/stupidity/ranting usually ends up involving foul language being used. It's easier to just ban certain topics versus having to play referee, shutting the repeater down, banning people, having others ran off from using the repeater, etc, etc.

LOL!  For decades, hams have (rightfully) been on the receiving end of jokes about their boring conversations; which frequently center on medical ailments, trips to the doctor, their "roids", bp meds, etc.  I am aware of one GMRS repeater group whose "administrator" cannot bring himself to make a series of transmissions without regaling the audience with the latest on his c-pap machine, his latest heart attack, his latest planned surgery, etc.  If that were not bad enough; there is his "beans, peas, corn, taters, maters" ad-nauseum, monologue about what all he did in the garden that day.  Often, he sounds like he is three sheets in the wind, which can add an element of entertainment value to his radio broadcasts and internet postings.  He would make a great ham except that he thinks he lacks the intelligence to pass the test.  Thankfully, he never tried to find out.

Speaking of "roids" Did I ever tell you that I have one dangling as long as a snap bean? And for you hotrod enthusiasts, I am willing to tell you about my full blown hemi. And these have been relevant topics on our local repeaters.

The Sad-H.A.M. gene often presents itself as someone that loves to talk for no other reason than just hearing themself talk.  Sometimes called "long talkers", they just.. talk.. and keep talking.  When a person presenting this gene is on a GMRS repeater they have either been rejected by their own kind, they are trying to disguise themselves as normal people, or they are simply "latent Sad-H.A.M.s".

Sorry if no one likes my point of view -- I have experienced the crap I was describing. I really want to hear both sides of an argument (as long as it civil and respectful) No one wants to hear a lame argument being reduced to the lowest common denominator. If the topic is politics, so be it.

Like my dad said "don't argue with a moron, he'll bring you down to his level and beat you with experience"

There lies the problem. A lot of people now days do not have any respect for those that have different opinions. That seems to be a lost skill that left us years if not decades ago. I've seen too many people not wanting to hear the other side's opinion. The lack of listening, respect, and understanding leads to arguments.

Politics and religion are two topics that will ruin a conversation quickly. I've had it happen in my own home with family.  And to save me the heartburn and headaches, I do not allow politics to be discussed at the table since no one takes the time to listen to the other side nor do they want to hear opinions that are different.

If family can't even be civil to each other, then how do you expect people to be civil to each other when they are not looking each other in the eyes such as on the internet or on the radio. I know most repeaters in my area do not allow politics or religion to be discussed and that goes for all of the 2m, 70cm, DMR, and GMRS repeaters.

For those that want to allow any and all topics, then I suggest they setup and run their own repeaters.

Good rhythm but almost leaves me empathetically breathless.

Reminds me of watching some of the Project Farm videos on YouTube. That guy talks fast.
