Motorola Programming Software for Mac

Question

Posted

I've been trying to find software that I can use to program my Motorola RMU2040 with my Mac.  It seems that the CPS from Motorola's website is not compatible. Am I wrong? Does anyone have suggestions?

If you have an older Intel Mac, BootCamp might do the job for you.

If you have a Silicon Mac then Parallels will be your only option - the CPS will probably run just fine but there is a high-chance that you wont be able to connect & send program to the radio.

Yeah... I have a new Mac.  I guess I can give it a try.  Or just use my windows machine.  I was mostly interested in knowing what the factory 99 frequencies are.  All my searching so far only tells me what the factory settings are and the frequencies set to channels 1 - 4.

I good refurbished windows lap top can be had for less then $100.  Many times much less.

That's a good deal.  But I already have a couple. Thanks for the offer.

I can not speak to the specific software or the programming cable you need for that radio, BUT I have an M2 MBP, in parallels I can’t seem to get cables to work. I have tried an APX7000 and CPS33, Harris XG100P with RPM14, and several different “cheap Chinese radios”. I’m sure there is something I could do to fix this issue but I am not an elite hacker, so my warning is this. Assuming it works at all it will not be plug and play.

note to add: the softwares for all of the above mentioned radios work just fine, just can’t read or write the radios.

Have you tried VMware? It supposedly works on a both MAC platforms. It's free. Plus, you can download Windows 11 directly from Microsoft. You will have 30 days before having to buy a product key. If it works, great. Pay if you want to keep it after 30 days. I use VMware foe all my radio programming whether in Windows or Linux.

I did, right before trying Parallels..
VMWare was so difficult and convoluted to get installed i was never able to get it running. - By comparison Parallels required one or two mouseclicks and it did everything, including downloading and installing Windows after it installed itself.  It is literally so simple, grandma could do it.

Nice! That's really good to know. Did you try it recently or many generations back? I find the latest versions work really well, surprisingly since Broadcom took over.

For those using Parallels, VMware or any other virtual machine software, make sure to allow pass through for your USB ports from the host Mac to the virtual machine. That is a common and easily overlooked thing when running virtual machines.

Not easily overlooked with Parallels! Parallels pops up and asks if you want to allow it every time you plug in a device.

I wasn't for sure about Parallels since I've never used it. But I do know that you sometimes have to double check those settings when using VMWare. Though generally VMWare will ask you to allow passthrough when first setting up a virtual machine.

It does it automatically in VMware, but you can have it setup to NOT default to connect at the start of the VM. I purposely set it up that way to be able to chose between the host or guest when I plug as cable in..

The last time I setup VMWare and any virtual machines, VMware did ask me if I wanted to pass through networking and USB ports. It was not automatic when setting up everything. This was with VMware on my 2018 Mac mini and my M4 Mac mini.

Are you sure that you have the appropriate driver for the type of cable you are using? It appears that the radio is not communicating with the computer. You need to check the device manager and see if you have the correct port setting selected in the CPS and match the port selection that the computer is trying to assign.

at least part of the problem is that to run on a Silicon Mac, you have to use Windows 11 for ARM.. and there was a big change in the driver arkatekture for Windows 11, and even more issues because its the ARM version.. it is a common (and as yet unsolved) issue for many radios/cables.

And using cables with the Prolific chip can be problematic to get running on Mac's. It's easier to deal with Prolific drivers on Windoze computers than to get them to work on Mac's.

I haven't even bothered trying to run any version of Windows in VMWare on my M4 Mac. I kept my Intel based 2108 Mac around for that.
