  2. I have a similar problem, I have two Baofeng UV5R8W, and two of the Baofeng actual GMRS units. Just using the radios, not the CHIRP software, I have tried configuring for repeaters while camping at various places. After putting in the correct info, including an offset of 5,(and direction also) then backing out, when i try it, no contact, and no "kerchunk". go back into the menu settings, and #26, the offset, is back to zero. I know that after I enter the offset I have been pressing menu again, and gotten the "saved" acknowledgment. Happens on both models. Is there another step for saving that I'm missing?
  3. Per Subpart A Rule 95.303, a base station is defined as: Base station. A station at a fixed location that communicates directly with mobile stations and other base stations. The FCC defines the station class by how the radio device is configured and functions and not by the type of the radio device being used. If the transmitter is connected to a fixed antenna at a fixed location and communicates with other base stations or mobile stations, it is a base station. It doesn't make a difference if a portable handheld or mobile radio device is being used if it is connected to a fixed antenna at a fixed location, it is a base station operation when it is communicating with other base or mobile stations directly and not through a repeater/mobile relay station If a base station communicates to other base stations and/or mobile stations through a repeater/mobile relay station, then the base station is controlling said repeater thus is now a control station.

  5. I recently had a similar issue interfering with my Osceola IN 600 machine, & it has a large footprint. We finally tracked it down - Source was a low band data packet transmission for a uhf simulcast paging system in the South Bend area. Yes - 500 watt paging systems are still in use in northern IN, but very little $$ spent on failing transmitter filtering. Owner had techs work on the transmitter / filters & the problem went away. Good Luck Finding........
  6. You can get some pretty impressive distances if both radios are high enough. There's a GMRS repeater ~30 miles from me that I can reach with an HT, although my signal isn't the best. With the same radio and a Comet SBB7 antenna on a pizza pan about 10' off the ground, I can get through easily. With a base unit and antenna on a 34' mast, it's like being in the same room. The repeater is on a very high tower and my house is on an elevated terrain feature, so there's not much in between. Heck, I've even heard that 200 miles is easily achievable.
  7. It seems to have stopped, so I'll probably never know what it was. However, I did figure out that it sounded a lot like APRS signals, for whatever that's worth.

    NEW Retevis RB24

Help me understand what this system does. How is this different from a regular radio and repeater, aside from being digital? What is the advantage of being digital? What capabilities does it add?

    NEW Retevis RB24

Inquiring minds want to know: Do these have Bluetooth? Can the 2025 version? That would enable running ATAK without crazy expensive mesh radios -- these would punch WAY above their weight class!
  10. Well, I will state that 10 years as a Part 90 frequency coordinator issuing frequency assignments to business and public safety licensees and working directly with both the Wireless and Public Safety bureaus states your interpretation is in error. Base stations are fixed sites such as E911 centers and EOCs, commercial radio and television stations and the like. Stations installed in police stations, fire stations and business offices and buildings are control stations.
  11. Hey, it chooches.
  12. This sounds like a project!
  13. I'll bet you that there's a BTech GMRS Pro involved.
  14. There are two ways to link 20 repeaters to the 'net. One of them is infuriating, one of them could be mistaken for Echolink or Allstar. This second method is forensically identical to proper use of GMRS. Unless you know the station's unoccupied for another reason, there would be no reason to suspect that somebody's taking a liberal interpretation of the rules, because this operation is only as harmful as permitted operation -- idk, like, there might be competition for a favorite channel or something?
  15. Thanks to @SteveGibbs (WSBM443), WRXS569, WSGW884, @WSCY890, and @WSDV406 (me) and for joining the check-in net tonight (8/06/25). Besides the check-in, tonight's question was "what was the favorite car you ever owned?" A sample of the answers (you'll have to jump in the nets to hear the full answers ) were: '64 Mustang, '69 Road Runner GTX, and even answers like a Can Am Defender (tricked out with a bunch of radio equipment) and a Red EZ-GO Golf cart by a station that shared he enjoyed driving this as a kid before losing his sight. Lots of great conversation about our first cars, how much we paid for them, etc happened after the net "officially" closed. Join us every Wednesday at 8pm on Brentwood 600, tone 123.0 for a quick one fun question check-in net. Always feel free to weigh in with your answer to the nets' questions here on this thread. If the nets get large enough, we'll start making each net it's own post. But for now, we'll keep it all here.
  16. Well, in case anyone is waiting with baited breath, I did it. Turns out I had my tones wrong. With a 5w HT and a Midlands MTX-25 stubby attached to the hood of my Jeep with a mag mount, I was able to hit the repeater and get a contact. Repeater is roughly 40 miles from me, as the crow flies. I am absolutely gobsmacked I got it to work.
  17. Thanks we thought so. With your You Tube video!!
  18. If it does what you need it to do, then, no matter what anyone else says, YES!
  19. ok just ordered the UV 5 G for my son and myself. We decided together on this radio.! Did we do the thing? Just wondering. thanks in advance: FatRat56
  20. i just got a DM UV 32.. When i get back from camping I'm gonna check it on the Tiny Spectrum. My experience with some of the Baofeng's I've test is hilarious with with their harmonics. I've seen second and thirds just about equal to main carrier. My Hytera's are pretty clean. The DM 32 sounds good, I'm getting good reports with it.. I like the radio
  21. I few years ago I tested my Yaesu FT3D and my BF-F8HP with an SA. On frequency, there were no side spurs on the BTech, but there was a pretty decent size spur on the bottom of the signal on the Yaesu. However, there were zero harmonic spurs on the FT3D compare to something like 15 spurs plus/minus the carrier frequency of the BF-F8HP. And several of the close harmonic spurs were at power levels close to the same as the intended carrier frequency. Like, within 5 or 6 dB.
  22. 95.1763 (a) & (b) are enough to make it clear you're wrong. Also 95.1749. And I'm not going to respond to anymore of these BS interpretations.
  23. There are no base stations in GMRS. There are portable (HH), mobile, and control stations. A mobile radio run from a power supply at a home is classified as a control station as its intended use is to contact other mobile stations or control a repeater that connects to other control or mobile stations. A HH is considered as a mobile. I

  25. A neighborhood watch is my intent but only during emergencies - not worth trying to get people involved while they have the regular communications. But I don't know if we'll do routine check-ins even then; just monitoring at set times is the main plan. I understand it could be an indication of somebody in trouble if they fail to check-in but it could just be they're busy so I don't know if that justifies check-ins. It can be worked out at the time it's active. The unwritten one - you mean you didn't read it? (haha). Go back and read two places: repeater definition in section 95.303 and station types allowed to use 467MHz (95.1763(c)). And the FCC clarification in this topic: https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/10063-base-station-cannot-use-repeaters/#findComment-106907
  26. I'm pretty impressed with this DM32UV.. The CPM is not too bad. It certainly looks like Baofeng borrowed some programming peramaters from Hytera and Harris CPM. If you've ever used either you will slip right into the Baofeng DMR CPM. For the most part i've been playing with analog on thjis radio and couple digital channels on MURS Both work great.. The Scanner on this radio is probably the best i've seen in a Baofeng. Especially choosing off the Zones.. Programming via the front panel is also the easiest i've ever experienced with a Baofeng.. I did purchase one from RadioDitty before i won this one. Baofeng shipped my prize radio and i received it in two dayx.. I'm still waiting for the one i purchased form RadioDiddy two weeks ago.. Once i get the other radio, i'll put a good test on digital and encryption. I can tell you though, you analog guys will love this radio just for the mere fact of programing and all the options.. The Zones and Scanning features will get you hooked on this radio. And the screen is pretty decent. So far so good.
  27. I can guarantee most of these HAM radios tuned to GMRS, with proper power levels and bandwidths programed, are 100% cleaner than most of these 'cheap' chinese radios out there .
