HA! I commented on that video. You can get a similar result for <$300. Well, maybe not at current prices. But that's about where I am for a single car, pit-to-car setup, with super-het radios. Those Racing Radios are *usually* business band radio. I like the stuff he builds, but for a guy always talking about how broke he is, he sure seems to like throwing it around lol For the grassroots racer, it'd be cool if someone at that level would show normies how to do it for more reasonable money IMO. That system costs more than all my radio gear combined.

Thanks! Another resource is HamStudy.org. That’s what I used when I started. They are free, but you’re welcome to donate if you want and they do have an app they sell for a low price for your phone or tablet. -

Steve is absolutely correct about the tests. If I can pass the Tech with a 35/35 and the General with a 35/35 then anybody can do it. They have some great tools for people to use to study for the exams (hamexam.org) is what I used (which someone here suggested.... thank you!). Ham is a great hobby and I am glad I did it. - Today

Program the Dayton tones into channel 23 and the Tipp DTCS code into channel 26 and see if it works.
-
Everything looks right to me but, I don't have one of these radios so I'm not aware of any channel restrictions. l

Most of the large race teams have licenses for the system. My system in my jeep cost around that price with 2 headsets, headset jacks and radio. I dont run TRBO but have my VHF or UHF tied in on that jeep. Not sure if he is using a LMR system to give him long range or not but know some folks that subscribe to a LMR system to give them range and distance on RF. On a side note just got home from Windrock Park this weekend for our first JJUSA event of the year. Have 4 this year on top of other events. Was great to get in the woods and actually tested my new starlink mini in the jeep on the trails. Worked as expected but was nice to sit and lunch and upload some photos and videos while everyone else was out of service.

The cigarette lighter is the worst thing to use, especially for a 50 watt radio. The lighter port is usually only rated for 10 amp and a 50 watt radio pulls double that on transmit. Plus there is a greater chance of getting RFI into your vehicle wiring harness that way. Your best bet is to run the radio positive lead to the battery and the radio negative to a chassis ground. This is especially true if it is a newer vehicle equipped with the battery management system. -

Here’s a recommendation from the FCC: ”The FCC said: "We are reaching out to recommend that you emphasize to new examinees that under the Commission’s rules, address information submitted by an applicant is considered public information in the Universal Licensing System (ULS) and may be accessible online through ULS and internet searches. If an applicant would prefer not to disclose their home address then they may provide an alternate address, such as a P.O. Box or a business address. This ensures privacy while still allowing for compliance to FCC rules." -
Socalgmrs lives in a great area for UHF. He really needs to take a trip out to the NE and experience hilly and mountainous regions where sometimes 50 watts won't get you 2 miles.
-
Post which channels you are programming and we can then dianose the problem. You may be trying to set a simplex only channel to repeater use and theradio's firmwre is blocking you.

I programed the BTech-50v2 radio with chirp and the offset on the radio is not staying programmed from the software when I upload it to the radio am I doing something wrong ???

Thank you all for the guidance. I’ll do some listening. Thank you Radioguy for the link. As to why, we are located in a low area with a mountain to our east and west. To the the north and west of us there are two good repeaters but they are 18 and 31 miles away. Handhelds don’t work.

He asked a valid question. Even if he read the rules it's still a valid question. You don't have to be the way you are when you answer. Such a sad ham.

There is no formal process other than obtaining a GMRS Lic. Follow the FCC rules and have fun, There are several communities where repeaters coehiist on the same channels, And tell the guy asking you "why you want to have a repeater" to pound sand into he Grand Canyon..
