  2. Are you close enough to the repeater? What antenna are you running? Anything in the way? Houses, trees, hills, mountains? also do they each transmit to eachother on simplex?
  3. The person on the other end of the radio is only hearing static and not my voice for the entire time of the conversation. I am nearing nothing when talking, but i do hear the tail after releasing the PTT.
  4. 1) the repeater owner set it up wrong 2) the repeater owner doesnt want to transmit his name and address
  5. What, exactly do you mean by "nothing but static" ? YOU hear static, or people are reporting that you sound like static? Or, something else?
  6. Good evening, A friend and I recently purchased the Baofeng UV 5G Plus and used CHIRP software to program some of our local repeater. The issue we are having is when transmitting it's nothing but static. However, when just listening we can hear others without issue. We have programmed the appropriate Tx and Rx codes and I can see when transmitting the frequency will jump up 5 (example, repeater is on 462 and when transmitting it jumps to 467). Anybody have suggestion on the cause or a potential solution? This is happening on all repeaters we have programmed in the radios. Thanks
  7. How can you trace a GMRS callsign being used on a repeater when it is not either located in MyGMRS or the FCC license database? It seems to be coming from a repeater because when the repeater IDs itself, it uses the call sign WINU693. I can't find this repeater listed in MyGMRS or the FCC License Database. When I key up and put out my call sign, I break the repeater squelch. I have heard people speaking on it and it seems to be from near the Alabama/Florida line. I request a signal check but never get a reply, so I don't know if I have my tone(s) set correctly or not, but again, can't find this repeater listed anywhere. Suggestions as why a repeater would be on the air but no call sign listed anywhere?

  9. Sure will WRYS709, by the way how does the $20 Dual Band Mag Mount work out.

  11. If you really enjoy listening and monitoring frequencies you might really like an SDR. They are inexpensive, less than 50 dollars on amazon for a decent unit and can be used with your existing computer. With the right antennas you can listen to just about any channel. Branching out from the basics you can do some very interesting things, like receiving satellite imagery. Enjoy the radio.
  12. I logged into radioreference.com and chose my county and it gives you all the frequencies, Sheriff, Fire, EMS, etc. El Dorado County is BIG, it goes from where Folsom ends all the way up to Lake Tahoe! I connected my new Baofeng UV-5G Plus to CHIRP and added all the frequencies to it. I just uploaded them using the Radio->Query Source-> RadioReference.com and it added them to the list after the pre-programmed channels then "Upload to the Radio". I know GMRS can't talk to these frequencies, but I can listen in! So, I added 113 channels! Really having a lot of fun so far with the radio! I have yet to hit the trails and used it to talk to my off-road buddies! Still waiting for snow to melt on all my favorite trails and then we got hit again with more last weekend!!
  13. The tests really are not that hard if you've got some background in radio. A friend of mine did Tech and General in one sitting and his "Elmer" (mentor) said that was "precision studying" when he scored perfect on Tech and missed 2 for the General. However you work it to get that ticket, do it. But cue the SadHam caterwauling about a) 13 wpm code and b) traveling to some FCC office and c) how much easier the tests are now... Many elements of ham radio and GMRS are not mutually exclusive, and it's never a bad thing to have one more tool in that toolbox! Dave WRJG283/N0TXW
  14. Most of the legislation across the US, excerpts 2 way radios. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  15. Might be my crappy cut & paste or some other thing. But easy enough to find online I would think. Basically exempts Hams, School bus drivers and commercial drivers covered under the 49 CFR regs. Nothing I could see excluding GMRS or other services though. Good news is I don't plan on driving to or through PA in the near or far future. Bad news is, other clown in other state legislatures may pick up this ball and run with it. The MN law passed a couple years back exempted two way radios...
  16. For whatever reason I haven't been able to open thar link since day one. I normally like to review the legislation before posting. If I was an error sorry for posting the thread. Sent from my SM-S901U using Tapatalk
  17. The PI3B+ uses 2.1A at 5vdc, which is 0.875A at 12vDC. We don't know what the power draw of the BF-888 is at 3.7vDC, but let's take a guess: Let's just guess that passive listening, the 888 consumes 150mA at 3.7v, or .0046A/hour at 12vDC. Let's say it transmits at 5w, so 1.5A/hour of transmission at 12vDC. Now give a duty cycle of 10% for transmitting (which is a lot but not impossible). That's .15A/hr. Add it all up. Consumption is 0.875 + .15 + .0046 = 1.03A/hr. Add some overhead for voltage conversion loss (heat), and for just "my paper napkin math is wrong", and you're at 1.5A/hr. A fire alarm battery is usually 7AH or 9AH. You shouldn't run lead acid batteries below 50%. So a lead acid fire alarm battery would last 2.3 to 3 hours. An RV Group 24 battery is 75AH, and with the same 50% safe working range, would last you 25 hours, or roughly a day. A 100w solar panel will get you anywhere from 15-35 amps per day in recharging. So with a 100w panel and a Group 24 battery you could theoretically go indefinitely, though you would be a lot safer with a 200w panel and a Group 31D battery. Sounds like you might need more than a hobby battery, but we don't really know the duty cycle you're anticipating.
  18. Is it possible in the GR you are getting power from a different port ?
  19. So.opem up the rock and follow the schematic. Did you try other ports on the RICK ? According to the manual pin 13 goes to F1 on the board before the switch. Do you have 12v on both sides of the fuse ? Pin 13 on the acc goes to pin 10 on tx radio along with the setup switch

  21. Batteries with different voltages and capacities are available from Hobby stores catering to the remote control people. I used 3.2V, 7.4V, 12V batteries in the airplanes I used. Capacity ranged from 250ma to greater than 12A. These batteries do not have an internal balancing circuit, so one has to be provided externally. RC battery chargers have them built in.
  22. I copies this out of the senate bill: according to this wording - Hams are actually not included as it states that a "wireless communications device does not include: (4) A MOBILE OR HANDHELD RADIO BEING USED BY A PERSON WITH AN AMATEUR RADIO STATION LICENSE ISSUED BY THE FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION; Got this from the bill dated 5-6-24.
  23. I remember asking you the question to this answer over a year ago, probably in the comments section of a video. I believe I specifically asked "Who hurt you?" Now I know.
  24. You’re still good. That’s legit use. [emoji109][emoji41] Good looking Jeep!
  25. No, but I do have strobes for 2 of my vehicles because I do volunteer field communications work for for DHS/FEMA, DoD/USMC, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Loudoun county and Price William county. However, they are hidden. Not a 'wanna-be' look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb0eyScO9lA
