  2. Your observations is so right on... I have two 805G and the girls love them.... Lite and easy... But my maleness likes the way I can program the 905G to scan the way I what and still talk to the girls... So we are in the same camp on the use of 805G and 905G.. MacJack

    New to GMRS

I've been into Jeeps for years and it looks like this is the way to go. Got my GMRS license (WRMM654) last month and received my Wouxun KG-1000 & Wouxun KG-905G just the other day. Now I just need to figure out all the in's and out's of this. Wish me luck!

    New to GMRS

Congrats, I use to be admin of FB Arkansas Jeeps till FB banned me. I was a big on GMRS for Jeep rides, so much nicer than CB's no interference, even suggested HAM too, for emergency, at least one person. Be surprised what 2M Repeaters you can hit, if you have an emergency. Locally my area not many people use GMRS for around town. Local Jail uses it, lol, talking between cell blocks. I made a mount for a magnet mount antenna attached to the third brake light.

Thank you MacJack! I was having a hard time trying to get the KG-905G programed and then got it figured out. Self teaching is the only way for ol' dogs to learn anything. BTW, Nice Jeep! The green Jeep is my old 2010 and the gray one is my newest. Both have a blower but the 3.6L is a much better power plant.

    Cable types and losses

GMRS/UHF do not skimp on COAX. Especially if running a long run for a tower, My Repeater on LMR400, about 100' though only using 50 of it atm. You need the highest DB gain you can get to get weak signals through the Duplexer in the repeater. My Base setup (before I learned about db loss in coax.) Tram Dual band 1481 I think it is. just RG58 50'. I can't begin to hear signals the repeater can. Its antenna is similar, but Diamond X301 I think it was, picked it up from a HAM meet. Both have SWR 1.1 So if someone offers you free Coax, and its not deigned for UHF/GMRS sell it to some CB'er and invest in the good stuff. I got a roll of brand new 1/2" hard line for free from a fellow that climbs towers for a living......

Exactly. If I hear it on my repeaters I give a warning, after that go use someone else repeater.

    Wouxun Kg1000g

Good Morning Grant. Are you setting the tones via the factory configuration software or front panel? If you are setting the tones via front panel there are some behavior things you need to be aware of. The ‘Menu’ doubles both as a function Menu button as well as a setting Save button. When you go into the function menu by pressing the ‘Menu’ button while in the VFO or Channel Mode, you need to press ‘Menu’ again to Save each and every change that you make that you want written to memory. Conversely, you need to press ‘Exit’ if you do not want to commit your change. But also, you never what to hit the ‘Exit’ button unless you do not want to change the active memory, even if you technically did not make a change. If you are activating the function menu, going to a tone menu, setting the Tone and then pressing ‘Exit’, your new setting is not being saved. You have to press ‘Menu’ again to commit it. Also, there is an interaction between the various tone menus that are not explained in the menu nor are intuitive/familiar to understood. There are two separate tone menus for Tx and two for Rx. One for CTCSS and one for DCS. These are mutually exclusive. You cannot have a non-zero (off) value in both at the same time. Saving a setting in the Tx-CTCSS menu clears the value in the Tx-DCS menu and vice versus. He are some examples of what you could be doing that is causing the issue. 1) You activate the function menu, go to one of the Tx tone menus, scroll to the value you want, then press ‘Exit’. If you do this, your new setting is not written to memory. Gong! 2) You activate function menu, go to the Tx-CTCSS menu, scroll to the value you want, then press ‘Menu’. Great, your new setting is saved. Yeh! However, if you now go to the other Tx-DCS menu, see that it is Zero (or Off) and hit ‘Menu’ again even though you made no change you are also clearing the Tx-CTSSS menu. Gong! While the user interface design for this is very, very poor and counter intuitive, it is learnable. Let me know if this helps. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

  9. That is how I set my 905G as well... NOW I'm thinking of added a https://baofengtech.com/product/amp-u25/ in my Jeep to give it more power instead of purchasing another radio because I use several HT in my Jeep. Food for thought... If this works for the way you will be using your Jeep as a base unit. I would look at a Cross Band Repeater unit so can get more walk around or hiking area using a HT to communicate to your parked Jeep in my case which will reach a repeater from the Jeep mobile unit with better antenna and more power. Still studying this option. Have not picked my mobile radio yet or just do a GMRS Amplifier for UHF (400-480MHz), 20-40W Output (2-6W Input), Analog and Digital Modes, Compatible with All Handheld Radios. Keep in touch... and if anyone has a Cross Band Repeater setup for GMRS let us know...

  10. There are only eight high-power channels, seven 5W channels and seven 0.5W channels. Any half-decent radio can scan them all quickly. And from your mobile you can't legally use 467.xxx5 (because 0.5W), so why to worry about them. If there is an open repeater in vicinity, it's most likely will be on 462.675 with tone 141.3.
