    Baofeng UV-5X GMRS

I have also experienced the same issue. It seems that the firmware is programmed in such a way as to only allow Tx on channels 1-30, rather than defining an allowable Tx frequency range. I could not add any channels to mine that I could use to transmit - the added channels are all Rx only. I also have the GM-30 from Radioddity, and it was the same situation initially, however, a firmware update made it possible to add channels which could be used for both Tx and Rx. Perhaps we can hope for the same thing for the UV-5X GMRS. For those wondering about using Chrip for these radios, support has recently been added in the form of the UV-5G model. Apparently, UV-5G is the new name for the UV-5X GMRS radio according to Baofeng's submissions to the FCC. The UV-5X designation brought confusion to the situation because there was an earlier UV-5X that was a ham radio, not a GMRS radio, then when the GMRS model came along, they used the same name as the ham model. The bottom line is that to program the UV-5X GMRS radio using Chirp, you need to use the latest version of Chirp (as of July 2021) and the Radioddity UV-5G profile (not the Baofeng UV-5X profile).

  2. Pleased to report I received my two Wouxun-KG-905G's from BTWR yesterday. After inspecting the units, & charging them up, I started to utilize them. They're very nice, solid units, & although (during the interrium wait for them to ship) I purchased an 805G, to familiarize myself with the basics of the HT, I'm really satisfied with the overall out of the box quality of the KG-905G's, and reception with the updated Nagoya NA-771G's I added to the order. One noteworthy issue I wanted to share with folks here, as it created a slight bit of anxiety for me while I was trying to utilize the USB Programming Cable (PCO-001) cable to connect to the Wouxun-KG-905G-Programming-Software, it seems there is a glitch in the Wouxun software with regards to identifying the COM PORT. Initially, if you click on [Setup] -> [Com SetUp] you may experience an issue where you cannot modify (or select) an available com port on your system. In discussing the issue with BTWR, I was told this is a known issue which Wouxun is addressing, but for now - the "Work Around" is to go into windows control panel, identify which com port the: >> Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge << is associated with, then go into properties for that com port & then select & confirm [Com Port 1] *disregard the message indicating the port is in use if you see that on your system, and just confirm modifying Com Port 1. Once you do that, the change takes effect immediately, & when you return to the Wouxun-KG-905G-Programming-Software, and then click on: [Edit] -> [Read] the "Read" dialogue box will appear, and you can click on: [Start] to go ahead and download the image from your radio. You'll also notice navigating to: [Setup] -> [Com SetUp], that a black dot next to the left of [Com1] should appear in the communication port dialogue box. *I attached a few screen shots to help anyone follow along if that helps. Should anyone experience this issue, and need some help - feel free to message me, I'm happy to offer any assistance if need be. ~JT WRKZ907

I have nothing bad to say about the KG-1000G. It is a great radio from my own experience with it and from what I've heard and read. I would say it is the best dedicated GMRS mobile radio available presently. For many mobile applications, though, I believe the Anytone AT-779UV would suffice, especially considering that it's about one third of the price of the 1000G. The 779UV only puts out a nominal 20 watts vs. 50 for the 1000G, and the 779UV doesn't have a remote-mountable front panel like the 1000G does. It is also not easily paired with another radio to make a simple repeater, but unless those things matter to you, it's a pretty good little mobile rig. I offer this suggestion primarily for those that want to advance from an HT to a mobile rig, but perhaps are not yet ready to take the plunge or spend the money for the 1000G.

  5. If you subscribe to RFinder, it will allow you to select a route and will provide a list of repeaters along that route using the parameters you set. While not perfect, I find it to be quite helpful for trip planning. This is for amateur radios only, though, so unfortunately does not work with GMRS repeaters (as of now, at least).

    Baofeng UV-5X GMRS

I believe you have encountered a common condition that exists with all BaoFeng and Midland repeater capable part 95 GMRS radios. The first 30 channels are either fixed Tx-Rx pairs, or otherwise the only ones you can transmit on. All the rest are Rx only. I don’t recall seeing any post that has indicated to the contrary. All four Wouxun GMRS models are capable of independent frequency and tone combinations in each of their 128-256-999 memories as do all the part 90 radios folks use. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

    Homemade Antennas!!

I built almost exactly the same thing using some old PCB type BNC connectors. All the wires were soldered on, no screws. Surprising how well a 1/4 works, and the bandwidth I got was from 430 MHz to 470 MHz at the 2:1 SWR points.

  9. I think every ham should at least try building a 1/4λ ground plane like this and cut some dipoles. GMRS users are obviously not in the hobby to experiment but I think being able to use stand alone antennas there seems value in understanding how they work and see first hand what impacts performance and issues.
