If there is no requirement for a BCL, busy channel lockout, that would be worse, automatic interference. I also think you wouldn't want this on a repeater channel. That has the potential to block a frequency out over a very wide area if the repeater was activated. If were are going to tolerate GPS updates why not have it restricted to one channel only leaving everything else open for normal traffic? In the Ham world there are several frequencies in the band plans set aside specifically for packet and APRS. Keep it on one of the 8 low power, 1/2 watt, FRS channels. They are sort of useless for GMRS as it is.3 points

Hey now, this probably won't be too exciting for a lot of you, but I thought it was share-worthy, especially for us Noobies. Plus, I need to get more points towards my next badge..."badges, badges, we don't need no stinking badges"(gratuitous movie line). ? So after watching a couple GMRS radio videos, I saw a some of things on expanding the range for HTs. The one thing that caught my eye was the Rat Tail, so I tried it on my Radioddity GM30. As some of of you know, I live in a canyon with very limited reception, so any addition mods are helpful. ? I cut a nine inch piece of wire and first I connected it to the metal beltclip bracket, not sure if that made a difference. Next I unscrew the antenna (NA-771G) halfway, wrapped the wire around the post and screwed the antenna back down...then waited. It wasn't too much longer that I noticed it was picking up chatter. Some clearer than others, but definitely better reception than before. ? Then came the the golden nugget. I tried my nearest repeater and was able to hear the wild (sometime heated) conversations, last night (those here that were listening too know what I mean ?️). I doubled checked via text with my GMRS mentor that I was actually hearing the repeater and not so random local traffic, and yep, confirmed and successful ground trailing wire experiment. Unfortunately, with the low power of the GM30 (5watt) I wasn't able to transmit to the repeater from my home. But hey, it was a free upgrade and win, in my book, knowing I can expand my range of reception if need be...WROA675 clear. ?2 points

Never say never ? As a systems integrator I run into serial devices on the factory floor on a regular basis. Weigh scales, label printers, PLC's and so on. It's mostly customers that are trying to milk every last bit from that "old technology" before converting over to IP devices and having to re-code the system. Yeah, I know I'm the Lone Ranger, but just making a point that that stuff is still running in someone else's world. You would flip out if you saw the number of virtual com ports I have on my notebook.2 points -
@MichaelLAX—yes and no. I see we're both commenting on similar topics in different threads and I apologize about the confusion... the 'trick' I'm mentioning here in this thread is solely for programming memory channels on the 935G and the 805G with CHIRP. There doesn't appear to be any way to unblock TX on non-GMRS frequencies on the 935. Locked up tight. the 805 is a bit simpler in how it's configured to operate on GMRS-only, and that's mostly down to the dedicated software only allowing drop-down selection. The 935 is VHF and UHF, receive-only. You are correct, it is not a superhet, it's based on an RDA Microelectronics SoC. I believe the primary differences between the UV8 series that it's based on, and the UV9 series, is that the latter uses a superheterodyne receiver, and can demodulate AM on aviation band.2 points

Quite simple. I mentioned in another thread that there is a UV8H driver for CHIRP under development, found in their repository. You must install it in your CHIRP driver folder, or enable developer functions and load it under File > Load Module. Like most of the Wouxun drivers on CHIRP, the frequency limits for each band are editable. The hardware is capable of a wide range, but are sold locked down to the amateur bands for dealers for compliance in their respective countries. It seems this feature was requested as obviously some people travel/move to other countries, or purchase from an international dealer. I did read one report somewhere that a user purchased a radio direct from Wouxun and it came (very slowly, mind you) completely unlocked. There are also a few 'dealer mode' applications floating around out there for the UV8D and UV9D, but they do not appear to work on the UV8H or 935G. But a nice trick for loading memory channels is using the same driver on the 935, and a similar trick for the 805G with the 816 driver. Doesn't seem to work for the 905G, as its parent model doesn't appear to be exported.2 points -

Ground Trailing Wire (aka Rat Tail)

I believe the proper term, if you want to get technical, is "counterpoise" ? And free upgrades are a definite win, on top of the fun of experimenting.1 point -
ANYONE NOTICE KG-935G SOFTARE PRINT BUTTON?
TOM47 reacted to MichaelLAX for a topic
This "trick" is for the 935G, correct? Are you saying that this trick will allow the 935G transmissions on non-GMRS frequencies, but you advise us not to do that? Is the 935G also VHF and does this trick work on VHF, too? As I recall, the 935G is not a superheterodyne receiver, but a SOC; is that correct?1 point -
Thanks Earl. I don't know who Michael, the site owner is, but yeah hopefully everything's okay. So here's what I finally went with for the homebase, and they should be here in a couple days: Larsen BSA 450 antenna - 30ft of LMR400 coax - Surecom SW102 - Radioddity DB25G I'm gonna get up there and remove the Dish, today or tomorrow,, and leave the bracket to mount the new antenna. then run the cable down into my office (not looking forward to crawling around in the rafters). Hopefully all goes smoothly and WROA675 will be up and running from home by weeks end.1 point

Should be Browning 6140, no? 6140 gave me years of very good problem-free performance. It used to sell for the whopping $35, now the cheapest I can find is $50 on amazon and $50 on newegg. If you only need GMRS, I would recommend it over popular Ed Fong antenna for the reasons outlined here on this forum many times. You can use search to read yourself. If you want ham and GMRS, I still would recommend something else over Ed Fong's antenna (Diamond X50). Yes, BR-6140 has female N-connector, so you cable should have male N-Connector on the antenna side. RG8/U would be an ok choice, however do not confuse it with RG8X, which would be much more more lossy, but smaller and easier to handle. RG8X is better suited for short tight runs, like when you are doing car install. LMR-400 is much better choice (two times better than RG8/U or RG213), when we are talking about 50 feet and more. It is also more popular, easier to find everywhere with connectors and without. Cable attenuation chart: https://w4rp.com/ref/coax.html Thread here about cables and loss (sadly, pics are stripped): I tend to buy my cable and connectors from DX Engineering, unless I'm feeling real cheap and adventurous on that particular day, in which case it's ebay.1 point

A Post to GMRS Radio Manufacturers
ShadetreeMechanic reacted to WRNA236 for a topic
I agree that it shouldn't take $500 to get some of this stuff but I do think it's unreasonable to expect all the way down to a $20 radio. Bubble pack radios aren't even made to be repaired or aligned, they are use-and-toss. So expecting more than a basic user manual is at best hopeful. Also the talent you allude to is not limitless. If you want a radio to hit a price point there's only so many NRE hours they can afford to throw at it. So if you want the time spent writing manuals it will likely come at the expense of design or quality in the actual device. Same with including CPS. I'm one who thinks a radio should have free or reasonably priced software to program it but I also don't expect it to be a feature-rich experience. A basic tool to get the job done is fine.1 point -

Congrats on the KG-1000G ! IMHO, the best mobile GMRS radio you can find today.. If you get a "UHF" antenna, you will have to cut it.. If you get any antenna that says "GMRS", you will not have to cut it. Although every different GMRS antenna has different specs, pretty much any GMRS antenna mounted properly on your (jeep??) will work just as well as any other since when you are on the trails you're generally not really talking very long distances.. No doubt some sad-GMRS user will quote a bunch of specs saying one antenna has better gain or lower loss, blah blah.. But in the real world, when on the trail you're not going to notice much difference so dont get too wrapped up on what the basement dwellers spew.1 point -
