  1. Awesome, that will make things much easier. Thank you.

  2. As does the btech, which also interchanges just fine with wiring harnesses for my icom and vertex radios.

  4. Yup, had the "searching" on an 8180. Friendly member here did his best to help me out but I never could get positive results. Although this particular 8180 was an ebay purchase, I simply contacted www.used-radiios.com and they kindly took the radio and made the necessary changes for a small charge + shipping, and got it back to me within a week or so. Awesome service, but I knew that, having purchased multiple used units from them in the past. I've yet to power it up but I'm sure it will be fine when I get around to programming.

  5. So while I understand the want / need of a vehicular repeater for extending range of a portable radio, if you do this on MURS you open up the possibility of a non-licensed operator gaining access to GMRS repeaters without that person even knowing they are doing so. Some MURS operator with the right frequency and PL code would access your vehicle repeater just like you would be. This is why you also can't do an in-band repeater on a FRS frequency. Joe Blo with his/her blister pack radios is suddenly on the local GMRS repeater. Yeah, that's not gonna go over too well. And honestly. If you need access to a GMRS repeater that often that you NEED a vehicular repeater to gain that access, you need to be on a commercial frequency and not GMRS. Of course at that point, you can get a VHF and UHF or whatever and have a vehicular repeater. But the issue I see with all this is having two different radio services linked.

    Antennas

The biggest consideration will be matching your antenna to the transmit range. Something tuned for gmrs, 460-470, or a dual band commercial (150 or so on vhf, and 450-480 or in uhf) would be good matches, generally in that order. For receiving, you have a lot more leeway on what will work, if not necessarily 100% ideal. As shipped, they will only transmit on gmrs, as that's a fairly strict requirement for part 95e approval; the rest will be receive only. The db20-g's twin, the anytone 779uv, is able to be unlocked for ham usage (@michaelLAX is a fan of this one...not sure if the db20-g can also.

  8. Great to see this information up front and on top. I have administered P25 radio networks for a very long time, and repeaters are not for the newcomers. I have built portable repeaters for use in the aftermath of hurricanes: Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, and for incidents such as the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (oil rig) explosion and resultant oil spill response. All of the advice given here is spot on. Repeaters are after you gain some experience running "barefoot"and simplex for a while.

  9. You mean simplex on the 462.xxx0 MHz frequency? That's perfectly ok, these frequencies are shared with FRS, the school is entitled to use it. If the simplex was on 467.xxx0 MHz that would be a very different story.

    Chirp- BTech 50X1

Sample CHIRP (since I do not have the 50x1; ignore that this is for my HT) It is always a good idea that when you use CHIRP for the first time, do a DOWNLOAD FROM RADIO and save it as "original" or "default" so that you have the original settings that came with your rig. Also, this "primes" your CHIRP file with the other settings that came with your rig, such as backlight, beep, etc. Then do a SAVE AS and give it another name (I like to use "50x1 202109282045" so that I can always tell from the date and time which is the most current as I resave to a new name when I make changes) and then make your additions to the file, such as 725 repeater in Channel 30 and then do a SAVE again. Then do a UPLOAD TO RADIO to put these settings into your rig. ?
