    New radio tip

My not be very Technical., but always nice to know at a glace your radio volume. Well for a old guy like me nearly close up blind without reading glasses. This tip makes life easyer. White fingernail polishes, a sowing needle. The needles eyelet acts like a fountain pin reservoir. Less mess but stll might need two coats. Make sure to paint only the indent space, last a long time. Many times a radios that the volume knob turns to easy I put a small dot at the preferred volume like a dial point on the base of the radio. My brand new Wouxun-935G has a nice grad protecting from turning so easly, it is very restricted/ friction to keep accidentally turning. (witch is a good thing). Hope someone finds this tip usefully. That metal chimney will have unintended consequences for your SWR and for where your signal will go. I can't tell based on a photo, but raising the antennas above that chimney will eliminate any problems (in addition to adding a ground plane as kb2ztx advised). Regarding the distance between two antennas... it doesn't matter that you're not transmitting on both at the same time-- if they are too close, you could damage the one that is not transmitting. Raising one higher than the other will help with this problem. Can you add a mast to the one that is attached to the chimney to get it above the chimney? That and adding ground planes will help immensely.

  3. And when the license goes away, I predict civility and adherence to rules go away too as anonymity is officially sanctioned. While there are those that use GMRS now that ignore the rules, removing the license opens a flood gate I hope does not get opened. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

    New kg1000g

The KG-1000G I own boots up to VFO mode after having done a factory reset. The user has to switch it to Channel mode after resetting. For a GMRS radio it should boot up into channel mode not VFO mode. Be that as it may, changing to Channel mode is just a press away by using the #6 (VFO/MR) button on the mic. This needs to be done for both the A and B receivers. You will know you are in Channel Mode (aka Memory Recall mode) when you see three small numbers ranging from 001 and 999 in the upper right corners of the left and right halves of the display. See image below. Once the radio is reset and in Channel mode, you should have 30 channels available to you for both receivers. You are not the first on this forum to have been bitten by this issue. Hope this helps. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

  5. This comes up often in some use cases, such as the bridges of ships, where the radios are mounted overhead, and the antennas are only a few feet above them. The higher the power of the radio, the more separation you want between the radio and its antenna and any other radio/antenna combination that could interfere with it. More so with radios that have plastic cases and minimal shielding often only being the heat shield fins. You risk damaging the radio by using them too close to the antenna or another radio and its antenna. As for cable, thirty feet is not much, and as long as it is shielded with low reflected power, checked with a meter, that power is going out the antenna....you do not want your radio next to that.

  7. Well, in a way they already have with FRS and upped the allowed power to 2 watts on most channels. When you start hearing digital communications pop up and no meaning full enforcement then you know it's headed down hill. By my work place I monitor FRS and several local business frequencies on the cheap BTECH tribander in my office. I did catch some brief DMR traffic on channel 17 or 18 a few times. You know it was DMR due to the rapid pulsing of digital noise you hear. I did bring in my D878UV once and decoded it just to verify it was DMR. No FRS radio can do DMR so it had to be either a commercial grade radio or a Ham rig programmed for FRS/GMRS. No idea who or where in the local area it originated from. I'm expecting to hear more DMR stuff and wait to see if the FCC steps in. I haven't heard it in a while so maybe something happened.

Being neither has a true ground plane it may be worth adding a ground plane vs moving them. Maybe its just the picture but i see no ground planes on either antenna. Those are both mobile antenna's so without a ground plane are both not going to do much.

    Midland MXT275 power cable?

Just for info - I have tested and used dozens of antennas, and the one I now use on my Jeep is the Midland MXT26A GMRS antenna. It has 6db gain, and right out of the bag it had a near-perfect 1.1:1 SWR so no cutting was required. And, oh yah, it transmits just fine

  10. Both measurements show very low SWR. The chan 15 shows 35W forward power, that is expected and close to claimed 40W. Second is just tad below 5W. The 15W-150W switch on the face of the of the SWR meter seems to be depressed for both measurements. Looks like depressed is for 150W range (based on 35W reading for 462.550MHz)? Make sure you have it in correct position for 40W and for 5W readings. You will have more precision in 15W range for the low power measurements. Other than that, everything is nice and dandy. What cable do you use? 50 feet of RG-58U will give you a low SWR reading, and a lot of loss.

  11. This is untrue. A repeater owner is not responsible for any traffic carried through the repeater as the repeater has no control over the traffc. The responsibility lies solely with the traffic originator. The repeater owner would be responsible only if they originated the improper transmission in the first place.

I have had six transceivers stacked on top of one another for close to eight years now. My only problem is remembering which mike goes to a specific radio! ?
