BTECH GMRS PRO
WRUU653 and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
Yes, many people remove their stock antenna and attach a cable leading to an external antenna. That would make more difference than having a higher powered transmitter. Comet, like @MichaelLAX mentioned would be nice. There are also longer antennas for handheld use. Probably the most well known is the Nagoya 771G (tuned to GMRS frequencies), but there are others also. Just make sure you match the gender of the integral connector.2 points -
New Feature: Classifieds
Pjshaw reacted to rdunajewski for a topic
I'm pleased to announce a new feature available on the forums: a new classifieds system! Premium Members can post a listing for radios, repeaters, antennas, and more that they are selling or want to buy. All members can view and purchase items from the seller, a Premium Membership is only required to post advertisements. Purchases are handled between the buyer and seller directly at this time, but we might expand this in the future to handle payments similar to how eBay and PayPal work. There are no commissions since we are not handling the payments on behalf of the parties. If you are a Premium Member, you will see a blue "Submit an advert" button on the Classifieds page. Click on this button and select the category to list your ad under. Listings are active for 21 days for free (less the cost of membership) and can be renewed if the item is still available. You also have the ability to set up shipping options for the buyer, and can paste the tracking number for the shipment once you've completed a sale.1 point -

Rohm makes wall mount mast brackets that extend out to 24 inches from the wall. https://www.dxengineering.com/search/part-type/mast-wall-brackets They should work on either sidewall or gable ends. They also make an eave mount bracket that appears on the same page: Hy-Gain EVE-48 Eave Mount Brackets EVE481 point -

Thank you very much for that. It will save me other hardware and a lot of Coax. I'll make sure there is at least 4 feet between them and give it a shot.1 point -

Good catch, should be fixed now. You might need to refresh the page a few times if it doesn't immediately show properly.1 point -

SteveShannon reacted to rdunajewski for a question
You should have the Raspberry Pi duplex mode set to simplex so it doesn't try to add hang time to the repeater. The setting is in /etc/asterisk/rpt.conf. Our prebuilt image for the RT97S has this setting applied as well as the audio levels preset.1 point -

This was informative and well written. I learned a few new things. A good read for people setting up a repeater for the first time as well as using them. Thanks for sharing.1 point -
Base Station Antennas
Sab02r reacted to SteveShannon for a topic
Yes, you can put the vertical base antenna on the same pole as your TV antenna, especially if you have several vertical feet between them. Your TV antenna is probably a log periodic antenna, which is directional and covers a different band. I would try that first. If you don’t watch TV while you’re transmitting you probably won’t even know it. If you do transmit while someone is watching TV, run some tests to see if they get any interference. Make sure the mast is grounded. If the attic is much easier try that, but getting it higher makes more difference than having more power.1 point -
It says simply "Wagner orchestra". See, Richard Wagner was a favorite composer of Hitler, and the founder of Wagner Group colonel Utkin (of spetznaz) is a big fan of 3rd Reich. "Wagner" was his nick name during Crimea annexation and later in Donbass, and the private military group he leaded (may be leading to this day) inherited the name.1 point

Wagner Group now recruits convicts from prisons, and sends them into the fire as a literal cannon fodder, promising the full pardon after 6 months of service. However, life expectancy of a random convict there is between one week and two. They (Wagner) burn them like dry hay. No sense to waste expensive radios, Baofeng is the right tool here. According to British Institute for the Study of War, by now Wagner lost about 40000 (forty thousand) as dead, wounded, deserted and POW.1 point

Dpl 265
FlatTop reacted to wayoverthere for a topic
Yes, the N and the I specify "normal" or "inverted" version of the digital tone. Usually if the letter is omitted, "normal" is assumed. At worst, if one doesn't work, switch to the other.1 point -
Newer MXT275 units with the USB-C port now come with wide band for the repeater channels, although some leftovers are still coming with narrow band. If a USB-C 275 has narrow band, you can mail it in and have them convert it to wide band. I did so and it works fine. If it's an older 275 without the USB-C port then it'll be narrow band only. (And I wish companies would change model numbers when they change major features.) The 50-watt 575 may be of some use if you have to push the transmission through a lot of trees or buildings, but you still cannot receive any better than the 275 with the same antenna. My 15-watt 275 hits a repeater 30 miles away through suburbia using a 6" quarter wave on the hood. The 575 may have a few more features such as wide/narrow selection. A 15-watt radio with a good antenna is much better than a 50-watt radio with a lousy antenna.1 point

Magnetic antenna mounts?

You asked a question. It was answered succinctly by @marcspaz and exhaustively why by @Lscott. You don’t need to worry about the extra thickness of the rubber. What additional help would you like?1 point -

So are you hearing the repeater courtesy beep and wanting to get rid of it? Courtesy beeps aren’t held in the same disdain as some hold Roger beeps. http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/tis/info/pdf/9509075.pdf1 point -
Given how Motorola has entitlement keys you write to a radio to enable various features I just can't see how anyone could make a definitive claim. I have a bunch of Kenwood radios, and a few Motorola's, myself and some look identical. Can't tell them apart without looking at the tags on the back side under the battery pack.1 point

I would think it depends on what you consider good. For me that means less traffic and as MichaelLAX pointed out more possible watts if needed. Really whatever comes in good and is open to communication to whoever you are communicating with.1 point

simplex freq
WRVT893 reacted to SteveC7010 for a question
One that’s not currently in use if you want to find a quiet channel to communicate with friends and/or family. You have to do some monitoring to determine this if you’re looking to reach out to chat with others, you’ll have listen to determine which channel they are using for chat. The answer is specific to your immediate area so any info from those of us not in your backyard is not relevant or reliable.1 point -
MDC signalling on GMRS.

I call MDC "whacker tone" because whackers use it to sound "official". I really see no legitimate use for it at all. Sent from my SM-A125U using Tapatalk1 point -
New Guest Forum
WSBS584 reacted to rdunajewski for a topic
Based on feedback I've received over the last few weeks, I thought it would be a great idea to open up a dedicated forum that allows guests to post. Some visitors don't have a GMRS license yet and have some questions to ask, and some people may be trying to register but need help for one reason or another. Since the forums use your regular myGMRS login, these visitors were unable to seek help from our community, and I either had to respond directly to them or they'd be without recourse. Hopefully this will help out some prospective members who need advice or the right nudge they need to get signed up. For now, posts do not require moderators to approve them. This policy may change at any time, however, if we get a lot of spam posts or notice any other prohibited behavior. Only guests can create topics in this forum, but all members can reply. If you're already a member, please use another forum for creating a post.1 point
