Well, I had to know if the GFI would pop and yes, it popped with the shelf in the up position so, its back down and no more popped GFI.2 points

Thanks everyone! Definitely got some good ideas. I had not thought about installing fan as well. But definitely would be a good idea with a temperature alarm. I also think it’d be good to be able to see my screen. When I get time to make on I’ll post some pictures!2 points -

I use an HT so I can take it to another room… you know if I see that it’s bothering my wife ? However to your idea, one thing I would like if it were me is a way to easily see the radio display and controls. Either with a radio that has it in the mic like the Midland MXT575 or some creative use of remotely mounted display like the KG-1000 plus. I also would love to see what you come up with. Please share photos if you go through with this.2 points -

As long as you consider air flow across the equipment it should be fine. Obviously don't build a pocket for the radio to slide into that has no air movement. That goes for the radio and the power supply. Far as interference. Again it shouldn't be a problem as long as the antenna is not right there in the room. Put the antenna outside and use quality cable to connect it to the radio and it will be fine. You have to remember that mobile radios typically are mounted in vehicles that see high internal temperatures and suffer from a lack of real air flow. Places like under seats and in trunks are common. You are gonna have it in a conditioned space. But I would watch the placement of the cabinet so you are not near a furnace vent that would be blowing hot air into the cabinet.2 points -
Repeater system open or not.
back4more70 and one other reacted to WRKC935 for a topic
Open or not? That is the question. Well no, not really. But I guess I need to determine what your definition of closed is. Are you referring to it being closed as requiring permission for access, or are you referring to closed as no one outside your specific group as having access going forward. And I will warn you that even having an OPEN repeater on this forum with POSTED PL's but the ability to request access will fill your email box with permission requests. I get them all the time. No one has ever been denied, but I still get the requests. So will you. If you are going to make the access semi-private, not post the PL / DPL information publicly, like I have, and wait for requests, you will get MORE requests. But at least the repeater is publicaly posted for frequency and area of coverage. This will cut down on the possibility of someone else parking a repeater on your frequency with a different PL. Not posting it publicly at all can get a repeater parked on your frequency if no one else knows about it. Or posting it as being PRIVATE, or fee based membership. Then you will get to deal with assholes like me that absolutely abhor the idea of taking a shared resource and trying to charge money for it. My way of dealing with it was building a repeater that completely covered the other guys coverage area and making it fully open. Of course he did have a for profit business of selling access to his GMRS repeaters, so I really had ZERO heartburn doing so. He was the only one that suffered form that since his users could access my repeater for free, so they didn't need to pay him any longer. But those are the breaks. I work very hard in this area to work with anyone trying to setup repeaters for any type of use outside of that. I have run coverage maps for all the repeaters in my area, referenced this site and others trying to locate all the operational repeaters around with their PL / DPL information so when someone is talking about putting up a repeater I can assist with something resembling frequency / PL coordination so interference is kept to a minimum and everyone is happy. I have programmed repeaters and tuned duplexers for others to get them on the air. And I have provided equipment to people to get a system on the air if they had a location to get something up and running. I just refuse to support it as a business, and will attempt to scuttle ANY attempt to turn GMRS access into a business for profit. Now understand that this stuff is EXPENSIVE. SIte access, electricity, equipment and maintenance all costs money. Requesting donations, having raffles, and other fund raising operations are well within the scope of getting the bills paid for keeping gear on the air. But GMRS is not there to enrich you financially. So in truth, leaving it open for use is the best option. Here's why in my opinion. First is management of access. There frankly is none. For those people that get on there and act dumb, the other operators will deal with them, typically by just ignoring the stupidity. And that is the best way for dealing with LID operators. They get bored and go elsewhere that they can get a rise out of people. You will have more users if there are fewer restrictions for access. But there is a requirement of good equipment for that as well. My linked repeater on the MidWest system gets over 1000 PTT's a day and 4 to 6 hours of talk time on a normal day and twice that on the days there is a net. You can't get a couple mobiles in a box to stand up to that usage level for long. But it's always better to have good equipment from the start and not need to worry about it. The other thing with more users and activity is you can see the fruits of your efforts. And there are people there if you want to just chat with someone.2 points -
I use the Diamond SRH77DA on it for an antenna. I hook it to a mobile antenna in the car and to my base antenna at home. It is far better on any band Ham, or GMRS than the stock antenna. I use the RT Systems software to program it. That solves the issues of repeater offsets. To me, it works as well as my KG935 and has a faster better scan that the KG935.1 point

More gremlins came and visited this morning. My repeater decided that it didn't want to unkey when a transmitting radio unkeyed. The repeater stayed key because there was a signal present to the receiver. This problem cropped up this morning. It appeared like a distant open carrier with a little intermod signal mixing in. When I removed the receiver cable from the duplexer, of course the signal quit and the repeater unkeyed. My big stick antenna that I use for the repeater will see very far. I can even communicate with a 4 watt portable little over 10 miles to the repeater. That is why at first I thought it was a distant signal. I connected the repeater to my secondary antenna, you know, the one that was popping my GFI, and put my base radio on the big stick. The GFIs are fine and after the swap, the repeater operated as designed, no problem at all. I put the repeater back on the big stick and the problem was still present. Just for giggles, I checked the RF out and reflected between the duplexer antenna output port and the big stick antenna and the needle on my Bird barely moved on the reflected so I put the 10W slug in and checked the reflected again and I saw a tad over a watt reflected. The RF power from the duplexer was about 26-27 watts on 462.625 MHz. So, in case that someone decided to communicate through my repeater I decided it was best to put the repeater on my secondary antenna, for the interim, so it will function properly and not stay keyed up forever. Anyways, I already had another project to occupy my time for the day. Today, my plans were to install my additional grounds to the repeater station and the secondary antenna system that I use for the base radio. I completed the job and I decided to reconnect the big stick antenna system to the repeater and the secondary antenna system to the base radio. The repeater unkeys as designed and the problem appears to be eliminated. I elected to leave the metal grid shelf lowered up in the attic that was causing the GFI to pop because I didn't want to push my luck but, my curiosity will no doubt get the best of me and I more than likely put the shelf back in place to see if the grounds eliminated the popping GFI. Anyways, I don't use the shelf and it just gets in my way. I think the newly installed "Green" wires scared and chased the gremlins away. At the moment, everything is just peachy. I must have been creating my own intermod problem without the secondary antenna system and the repeater station not being grounded. Grounding the Repeater station. Grounding the Secondary Antenna System for my base radio. Connecting to the ground system at the Lightning Arrestor that is used on the LMR400 Cable run from the Big Stick to the Repeater Station.1 point

For years I have had radios next to my chair or couch in my Livingroom area. Currently have 2 scanners on mine as well as a XTL2500. Cables run down to floor to a bulkhead. Power supply is on floor behind the stand. Works well for me. No need to build it in for me.1 point -
Does the negative length of a dipole matter?
WRUU653 reacted to SteveShannon for a question
If the all-thread were 1/4 wave and not connected to the vehicle it would be a true dipole. In a true dipole both halves are balanced radiating elements. But since it is connected to the car chassis (ground) it’s just a quarter wave vertical with a vertically extended ground plane. I don’t expect it to hurt but experience will tell you. Having part of the ground plane be a vertical element may be beneficial, but I have no idea how much. Certainly getting the antenna higher up will help.1 point -

In order: 1. Yes. If necessary you can always add a fan. 2. No. 3. Not at all. No, you are not better off setting up a repeater and using an HT, especially if you’re trying to hit another repeater. 4. Sorry, I haven’t. Please share your pictures though. 5. No, being in a wooden cabinet will not cause interference.1 point -

Im running a Diamond 40Amp Power supply mounted in a 36"x48" cabinet. My repeater radios are also in this same cabinet where i have placed a wireless SensorPush temperature monitor set at 90 Degrees. I also have two AirPlate venation fans (one exhaust one push fan) mounted on top and bottom of the cabinet and set to come on at 80 Degrees. The ventilation fans do kick in once in while, the temperature monitor never has went to alarm.. This is all mounted in my garage where the temp stays at 70-80 degrees.1 point -

I looked at Nesbit 304. The problem is that you appear as the owner, even though in the map it appears that WRPN902 is the owner. I’ll report your post to Rich (owner of the site). It’s obviously a problem with the software that allows people to somehow appear as owners of repeaters. We saw it happen last week also.1 point -
seems like uv-5r or baofeng is a bit of a trigger word... its been working good on my local repeaters. if I was causing problems I would use good judgment and stop using it honestly if it weren't for baofeng I might not have realized my inters in radio.1 point

Keep checking. But are you offering them anything in return for access. Sometimes even site maintenance (mowing the grass and maintaining the building is enough). Far as can't add anything else to the site. Is it that you can't add antenna's or can't even add equipment in the building? If you have two UHF antenna's on the tower, there are options for adding more repeaters, but you have meet certain requirements to make it work like the antenna's need to NOT be at the same level. I have two antenna's on my tower and have 4 repeaters connected to those two antenna's. One antenna acts as a receive antenna and the other one is for transmit. It gets a bit complicated, and can be rather expensive, but it's certainly possible to do, since I am doing it.1 point

I don’t have the 935G but I have the BTECH GMRS pro. I also have the Wouxun KG805G. That said I like the GMRS pro . I plan on at some time getting another GMRS pro. I like the Bluetooth programing. Another feature I like is the play back feature. It’s a nice tool for range testing and for testing other antennas. I also like the IP67 rating. Also it seems to be a more rugged Baofeng radio . As far as how it receives it does it as well as my other radios. I plan on using GMRS pro while I’m hunting. What I don’t like is the accessory jack . You have to buy a different cable so you can use other Baofeng accessories. I want to also run mine with a Walker Razor. Hearing protection/ headset in one unit.to do that I have to buy a special cable so I can hook my hand Mike and then buy a cable with 3.5 audio connector on each end of the cable. What I’m getting at to hook any one of my or other radios up all I need is the cable with the 3.5 audio jacks . Usually the pro I have to buy the BTech pro accessory cable. At $22.49 just the only problem I have with the pro. As far as regular radio performance it seems to do as well as the KG805G and my BTech V1 &V2 radios . Maybe even better.I’m a BTech fan anyway. In the Jeep, I'm running two 110w XTL5000 radios (one for VHF and one for UHF). I also have some customized Yaesu FMT-300DRs for same band/crossband VHF/UHF repeater systems and an FT-891 HF radio. I have entirely too many radios at home to bore people with... but the flavor is a variety of Icoms such as an IC-745, IC-746 Pro, IC-7000 and IC-7300. I have a bunch of HTs; mostly Baofeng and Yaesu. Also a 300w VHF Amp (FM and SSB) for when tropo ducts are the place to be or if I want to mess around during a VHF contest. I really want 991a. I need to stop making excuses and just buy one.1 point

The OLYCOMM repeaters have general use "open" tones and you can read about them here: https://www.radioofhope.org/oly-comm-volunteers I listen and sometimes participate on OLYCOMM3 and it's fairly active. There's a weekly social net on Wednesdays 8:30pm - 9:30pm, and a weekly tech net Wednesdays 6:30pm - 7:30pm.1 point

Baofeng Radios
Hoppyjr reacted to OffRoaderX for a topic
They are nothing but cheap Chinese junk! Anyone that uses one is not as smart as I am! ...just wanted to get that out of the way right up front.. I own several different model BoofWhangs and most of them offer great bang for the buck. Anyone that compares a $20-$50 Baofeng to a radio that costs much more (as done in this forum all the time) AND expects it to perform just as well is a fool and should be ignored.1 point
