    Stun and Kill Function

Are you transmitting on the same channel as you were when you were getting 4W? The output varies on most of these radios depending on the frequency.

  2. Here’s what a Reddit user said: Stun is a setting which will allow the radio to receive but not be controlled or used to transmit. It will listen for the revive command. It's a commercial radio feature. For example, if you have a radio which found it's way into the wrong department and need to get it back...you stun the radio so the current user brings the radio in. The radio can then either be remotely revived or revived through reprogramming the codeplug. Now there is also a function called kill...which is used to make the radio inoperable. In cases where a killed radio can be recovered, it will have to go back to the manufacturer (with the associated service fee) to be fixed. Short of Stun/Revive/Kill: A stunned radio can be revived. A killed radio is dead.

    Stun and Kill Function

Which is one reason I haven't had a daily driver built in the 21st century. The other reason being that I spend all my money on radios.

Its just like on modern cars how law enforcement have your car shut off if you are not stopping or whatever. Come think of it that could be useful on CB's at times.

  5. Since wildly straying off-topic is now the "in" thing to do, I'll jump in: Is it the 50W GMRS radio or the 50W HAM radio? Makes a HUGE difference when programming.

  6. Hats off to both of you. Based on the success LiguidJS83 had, I downloaded the file WRZE995 shared. It was very late last night, and I was tired. So, I might have failed to follow the high-speed video correctly, but I did not get it to push to the radio, so I followed my instincts and went to bed. This morning, I gave it another go. My first step was to realize I had another loose Baofeng cable plugged into my PC. Maybe that caused me to pselect the wrong port last night. The bottom line is the file uploaded to the Baofeng UV-9G fine. I disconnected the HT and cycled it off and on. It now seems to work perfectly, receiving and transmitting on channel 15. I am now going to do the second UV-9G. I now have (2) fully functional UV-9Gs that I got for half-price plus my hassle. I wonder how many have a Baofeng with this issue that don't even know it? I tried to give both of you a "Thanks" button, but the forum told me I could not give any more reactions today. It is the first I touched the PC today unless I was on right after midnight. Apparently, I am too overreactive. I have to subdue my appreciation. This topic is a valuable resource to many looking for a fix to this.

  7. I used to complain about off-topic comments but i've decided that instead of fighting the tide, i will just embrace it like everyone else apparently does.. and for an added bonus I decided to be nice to the n00b... I think i'm turning over a new leaf...

  8. Both the $26 radios and the $226 radios have the exact same farz and there is not a huge difference between them. For most people the value boils down to build-quality, features and customer support. If you dont care about those things thing stick with the less expensive radios or whichever radio has the features you care about.

  9. There is no setting on that radio that would reduce the power output when set to high power. BUT - i would try a full reset anyway as that is probably the first thing that BetterSafeRadio will have you try.

  10. No, it doesn't have anything to do with it.

Could be the meter or connections? It happens.

It obviously is or your wattmeter wouldn’t register 3.96 watts.

If they killed your radio it wouldn’t work. If they stunned your radio it wouldn’t work. There is no “deflate their ego” function.

  14. And BTW, thanks, it's because of your videos, that I not only got my license but, this radio too!

"It just so happens that your radio here is only mostly dead." With apologies to Miracle Max.

  17. A little internet search and it would seem Jerald may be living in a Big House, if you catch my drift. I can’t help but wonder if Shauna is even aware. Even her FCC license has an address with the attention to Jerald. That’s as far as I’m going with this. Best colloquialism of the morning. ️

  18. The license was first issued in late 2021, so it’s not a grandfathered one. I agree that it appears that the owner (Shauna Cape) allows hams to use the repeater using her call sign WROQ916? I agree that it’s not kosher, but it’s not my circus and not my monkeys. But I also did note that the address for the licensee included a line to divert the mail to the attention of someone else (Jerald) apparently in the same household.

    CHIRP Vs .......

While I am still not certain what the issue was, it is resolved. After trying several times, confirming the radio was on and properly connected, I decided to click on one of the menu items that were not greyed out. I closed all files and clicked "Upload from Radio". It did upload the file. I turned the scan off on NOAA frequencies and clicked on "Download to Radio," and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the ideas and help.

  20. Hello, I can confirm the fix from Abbree works to resolve the CH15 issue for the GMRS UV-9R and also UV-9G. I sent message to ABBREE through amazon and they requested an photo of my email address. The next day they emailed me a 197 mb file link to download the update software and the same instructional video they have on Amazon for the UV-9r; the actual upgrade files are less that 1mb. I purchased the UV-9r from ABBREE and several UV-9g from Radioditty; Radioditty's resolution was "We'd like to arrange a new UV-9G radio replacement from our Chinese warehouse and shipping time takes 7-10 working days." The update process is exactly the same as the video, quick and didn't change any saved settings; still works with CHIRP using the UV-9g profile, FM radio and everything else works as far as I can tell.

  21. Going with advice read on the forum, I suggested to the club to invest in a Bridgecom repeater or better versus trying to run two KG100G's for our repeater. We already have Motorola repeaters setup for 70cm and I'm not sure what the 2m repeater is. We lucked out and the tower is 900 foot tall. Plus there are some abandoned antennas as either 400 or 600 feet that will work great for GMRS. We tested the antennas and hard line and got a SWR of 1.3 on GMRS frequencies. We did a test yesterday using a MXT500 and MXT575. I am 21.5 miles from the repeater and the base of my Comet CA-712EFC is about 18-20 foot above the ground. We had no issues talking to each other on simplex and low power settings.

    My repeater came in :)

I’m pretty excited for this neighborhood repeater. Just wanted to share with the group!

    My repeater came in :)

The amateur radio club I belong to is considering getting one of those to put up on the repeater tower. We already have a 2m and 70cm repeater on the tower and will be adding GMRS to it soon.

  25. Using two radios like the KG1000G is not a great solution. It is a good way to learn about how stuff works, but it is not good, long-term option especially if you want many farz - its also fairly expensive. I would recommend getting a used commercial UHF repeater like a Vertex 7000 or something like the Retevis RT97 - both will perform better than two KG1000Gs and will cost less. Unlike many of the other responses you will get, I have actually used all 3 of these setups - The Vertex works best with a max range of about 70 miles.. The Retevis RT97 gets about 40 miles and the KG1000G setup, even though it has more power than the other two struggled to get ~20 miles... There are many technical reasons why the two KG1000G setup does not work as well that I wont get into, but trust me, and others will confirm, its not a good solution. The RT97 will be much easier to run on a battery and solar power than any of the others. I have also done this, and the RT97 lasts far longer because it uses much less power.

  26. Ham radios don’t have a certification specific for Part 97, the Amateur Radio Service. What you do see is the typical Part 15, which is to ensure the radio can’t receive cell phone frequencies. As others mentioned you can’t have a radio that has GMRS, and certified for Part 95, and Ham frequencies in it at the same time I don’t agree with that opinion. The reason is the Ham 70cm band is NOT an exclusive allocation for Ham Radio. In fact Hams are officially secondary users while various government users are primary where a license is required and the radios require certification. Rereading the GMRS rules regarding radio certification an argument can be made having 70cm band frequencies in the radio along with GMRS doesn’t necessarily mean the rules are violated IMHO.

  28. In my area, everyone seems to want to look like they "overland" but never even leave the pavement. I have even noticed the CB radio crowd mount two antennas, one on each side of their lifted Jeep or truck, but not even have a radio connected, as it looks cool. I show up with my old Blazer and a Phantom Antennex antenna, and they wonder if I even have any radio gear installed (helps with some of the hiking trail parking lot thieves too). Advertising cool gear in your rig may look cool, but does it work....some times yes, and sometimes no. I am amazed at Midlands marketing though, they are filling a niche for sure. But for those that know what I use, I'm just the "Motorolian Empire Warlord"....another person's words. (That does sound cool, I must admit). Whatever you use, make sure it works well, and is installed well (grounded, adequate power, less bends in low loss coax, good antenna), and you will be far ahead of many that just buy off of websites and plug things in.

  29. i have the KG-1000's set up for a repeater and pretty happy with their performance, I'm making contacts with mobile's 60 miles out.. I'm, setting on a hillside about 500' overlooking the Indian Wells Valley using a Tram 1182 on 30' mast. I also cleaned up my mobile Duplexer with my Nano, the factory tune wasn't very good. i am concerned about the duty cycle on these KG-1000G radios, they get very hot after about 15 mins of continuous use. I plan to use these as mobile's so I actually have two Maxon 8402A radios on order, they create a repeater much like the KG-1000 but better because they are commercial radios and have a 100% duty cycle. They are also a little cheaper then the KG-1000 radios. If you decide to go with the Maxon's be prepared to wait about 60 days, they are on back order. I'm also using EchoStaton with a RIGblasger for my ID Controller. IMO, this is the best way to go for creating an I'D controller on your repeater. I have mine set up for Voice I.D. with a time and temp stamp. EchoStation has a lot of flexibility and the software is very cheap, only $19 bucks. RIGblaster ties it into the radios via the Mic ports. Very easy to set up.
