I have both the radios you mentioned. The Baofeng UV-9G and the Wouxun KG-935G Plus. KG-935G Plus hands down is my favorite GMRS Radio. If you gotta have quality and waterproof as well as even more frequencies to receive you could spend even more and get the Wouxun KG-Q10G, then you can jump in the hot tub and with quality. The ladies can see a cheap radio a mile away. In all seriousness I like the Baofeng and if I am worried about damaging a radio that's the one I'll grab but I've bounced my KG-935 off the pavement and not a scratch. I started to do a list of the differences but the most important difference is this. Which one do I grab when I want to use a GMRS radio? KG-935G Plus at least 99 out of 100 times. Ask anyone who has both and I'll bet that's their answer.2 points

Stubby Antennas
WRUU653 and one other reacted to SteveShannon for a question
I have one on one of my small Yaesu dual band handheld radios. It’s made by Diamond and while it isn’t as effective as the longer Diamond, I can still hit the repeater that’s 16 miles away. It’s good enough and small enough to carry full time.2 points -
Solar powered repeaters?
SteveShannon and one other reacted to PACNWComms for a question
Glad you have the right person....just now seeing this. I am in WA State, but often went to Alaska for the oil industry. My solar repeaters were for use on buoys and for oil spill response. Now, I manage radio networks for a private corporation with fire departments spread across the United States......taking much of my time right now as we are upgrading everyone to APX6000XE and APX8000XE handhelds, lots of work.2 points -

Front end overload is a thing. Unless you have experienced it, and observed it side by side with different radios, you likely won't understand or care. The better radios have much better filtering to prevent this. Also, along side better filters, it also creates better selectivity. Also better accessories are available, and audio quality. These are just a few.2 points

Cheap Vs Expensive - what do you really get?
back4more70 and one other reacted to WRHS218 for a question
What is the difference between a 2023 Kia Rio @ $17K and a 2023 Camaro SS @ $50K. They will both get you to the grocery store. The will both get you across the country. Why would anyone pay $50K+ for a new car when they can get one that will do the same thing for $17K? Yeah, it is kind of like that. I have had both the cheap radios and a couple of the more expensive radios. The build quality, the ease of programming, IP rating, and a lot of other things make the more expensive radios I have worth it for me. It comes down to personal choice. If you have to be talked into buying something, you probably won't be satisfied with it.2 points -
Man... what a joke. If the FCC doesn't spank someone for that, I will lose all respect for that agency. I think it's wild that here in Norther VA, we have people complaining because they think someone ID'ed in 16 minutes instead of 15 minutes, meanwhile in Castle Rock it's a free-for-all. It's even in the title. SMH.2 points

Uh it doesn't work that way.....

https://mygmrs.com/repeater/7898 The Front-Range Electronics Engineers GRMS repeater is open to all FCC licensed GRMS operators. It is also open to FCC part 97 operators that do not have a GRMS license, those radio amateurs must register with us for an identifier under the license of the repeater owner. Uh....Really....Apparently you didn't read the rules....1 point -
Now imagine switching to a taller high gain antenna. That will really let that 50 watts sing.1 point

Never thought of it as bouncing. Interesting. Sounds right though, especially for us lowlander Floridians! In my case on an island 11-feet above sea level, which when it comes to RF everything around me seems to be an obstacle. In my particular case, the difference between transmitting (and for some weird reason receiving) on a 15 watt MXT275 and a 50 watt MXT575 is nothing short of spectacular, and both tested with the same antenna on my vehicle. I said game changer for the MXT575 on my post and I REALLY mean that, nothing short of that.. Oh, and I enjoy your channel (subscribed).1 point

High Watt mobile designed so the main unit can be hidden
WRUU653 reacted to OffRoaderX for a question
^ that.. And, for clarification, UHF (GMRS) is line of site. If you cant see it, then you are bouncing your signal to it - and more power helps to do that.1 point -
High Watt mobile designed so the main unit can be hidden
WRUU653 reacted to SteveShannon for a question
Of course power makes a difference, otherwise we could all have FRS radios. But many people get worked up about a watt or two when a good antennas makes much more difference.1 point -
TD-H8 GMRS Handheld Receiving GMRS Repeater signals but not transmitting to GMRS repeater.

A repeater acknowledgement is only heard if the repeater operator programs it. It’s not necessary and some do not.1 point -
Cheap Vs Expensive - what do you really get?
AdmiralCochrane reacted to WRQC527 for a question
This subject has literally been beaten to death on this site and many others. But since you asked, I'll compare my favorite two HTs, my Baofeng UV5R and my Yaesu FT-70, both of which will do GMRS if the situation allows it. Cost. $20 vs $170. Baofeng wins. Printing rubbing off the keys in 6 months. Yaesu wins. Keypad programming. Yaesu wins. CHIRP programming. Baofeng wins. Receiver sensitivity. Yaesu wins. Battery life. Baofeng wins. Durability. Yaesu wins. Transmit audio. Tie. Receive audio. Tie. Flashlight. Baofeng wins. User manual. Yaesu wins. Worrying if it falls in a lake. Baofeng wins. I'm sure there's more, but you get the picture. I think the Yaesu is the better radio, but the Yaesu is certainly not 9 times better than the Yaeasu, and the Baofeng is not 9 times worse than the Yaesu. Or however that math works. I hope I answered your question without violating your rather numerous demands.1 point -

I used to complain about off-topic comments but i've decided that instead of fighting the tide, i will just embrace it like everyone else apparently does.. and for an added bonus I decided to be nice to the n00b... I think i'm turning over a new leaf...1 point -
Cheap Vs Expensive - what do you really get?
WRUU653 reacted to OffRoaderX for a question
Both the $26 radios and the $226 radios have the exact same farz and there is not a huge difference between them. For most people the value boils down to build-quality, features and customer support. If you dont care about those things thing stick with the less expensive radios or whichever radio has the features you care about.1 point -
TELEVISION BROADCAST ON FRS CH7
SteveShannon reacted to WQAI363 for a topic
I've had experience using GMRS Long Before I was even licensed for both. Back in 1993 or 94 the Philadelphia Operation Town Watch groups were migrating from 11m to GMRS. Our group TACONY had two board members that were licensed. According to the Rules & Regulations, every member should have applied for their License, since it was group and not family. As far as GMRS Part 95 Type Accepted Radios, they really weren't any. The City of Philadelphia issued some radios to each group, but those radios weren't Typed Accepted. By 1998 & 99 we went GMRS to LMR system, because licensing term were longer and the radios were already typed accepted for Business Band.1 point -
TELEVISION BROADCAST ON FRS CH7

Since this subject was revisited, it could be as simple as someone leaving a radio on VOX near a TV or broadcast radio receiver.1 point -
You have no chance of taking 2m frequencies away from HAM (it's already too crowded). There are 150 MHz freqs that aren't used much since the emergency responders moved to 800MHz etc. - try to get those and leave 2m HAM alone.1 point

Using two radios like the KG1000G is not a great solution. It is a good way to learn about how stuff works, but it is not good, long-term option especially if you want many farz - its also fairly expensive. I would recommend getting a used commercial UHF repeater like a Vertex 7000 or something like the Retevis RT97 - both will perform better than two KG1000Gs and will cost less. Unlike many of the other responses you will get, I have actually used all 3 of these setups - The Vertex works best with a max range of about 70 miles.. The Retevis RT97 gets about 40 miles and the KG1000G setup, even though it has more power than the other two struggled to get ~20 miles... There are many technical reasons why the two KG1000G setup does not work as well that I wont get into, but trust me, and others will confirm, its not a good solution. The RT97 will be much easier to run on a battery and solar power than any of the others. I have also done this, and the RT97 lasts far longer because it uses much less power.1 point
