  1. Well, if it's any consolation, you've convinced me it's a great radio. If I can ever afford one, I'll get it. I just won't tell anyone I'm also going to program it for...

  2. There’s a procedure that manufacturers go through to get their radios certified for GMRS and pretty much any of the other services except amateur radio. That’s why ham radios are prohibited. Other than regulations I don’t know why FCC doesn’t want us to easily use a part 95e certified radio on the ham radio bands, but they don’t. But I just don’t think they would ever be able to know that a person’s type 90 or 95 radio has been opened up for use on a ham band based strictly on transmissions. I think the only way a person would ever get cited is if they act like an idiot while transmitting. Then the citation would just be an additional charge on top of the charges they earned by being idiots.

  3. There was a guy just a few months ago who was sited for using non-GMRS equipment on a GMRS repeater. That was not the primary focus of him getting in trouble. He was jamming a repeater and that is why they went after him. During their investigation they discovered he was using a non-GMRS radio and so they just threw that on the pile. I think it was the forth violation out of four violations sited.

  4. We discourage doing something like this in a public forum and using them out of band. It just confuses new comers giving them advise that might get them into trouble. What people do privately is their business, I'm not a radio cop. If somebody wants information along these lines the best advise is to go with a private message to the other party.

  5. Apparently they got their FCC type-acceptance. MTC, RW Antenna, and DX Engineering have them for sale tonight: https://www.mtcradio.com/alinco-dj-g46t-portable-5w-gmrs-ht/ https://rwantennastore.com/alinco-dj-g46t-professional-series-gmrs-ht-uhf-fm-5w-transceiver/ https://www.dxengineering.com/parts/alo-dj-g46t Oy. I'm going to buy one, I just know I am. Yup. I did. Just couldn't help myself! I'll give a full report once I have it.

  8. No, he wasn't talking about using GMRS to advertise items for sale, but more for business operations ie, Walmart store operations, road flagging crews, survey/construction crews on a work site, provided each user is licensed. Its permitted, but there is a quick return loss between each user and just licensing a business frequency. One way it would make financial/common sense is a family farm, all workers are in the "family" list if Part 95, then it would be easy (and cheap), and not require coordination, to put up a GMRS repeater and run GMRS for all farm operations.

Obrien Potato's (or my take on it) 3/4 sized cubed potatoes, enough to fill a 12 inch cast iron skillet half way up 1 pound breakfast sausage green pepper (I do half of one) cut into small pieces half a yellow onion cut into small pieces Brown sausage, I tend to hold back enough sausage for 4 small patties, but that's my preference. Break sausage into smallest pieces possible with spatula. Brown / cook potatoes in olive oil with Paprika (enough to lightly cover cubed potato's) garlic, salt and pepper to taste While those are cooking, cut up onion and green pepper. These need added just as potato's are starting to soften and brown. At that point add the onion and green pepper. Add browned sausage to potato's and stir it all together. serve with a sausage patty on top This one is a staple for us. I make this for breakfast or dinner. BTW, if I am posting it here, I make it in cast iron. But then again, i only use cast iron skillets to cook in. Sauce pans are the normal stuff but my skillets are all cast. I rarely cook in anything else.

  10. There is one radio service that encrypts conversations, doesn’t require users to ID, and doesn’t require users to own a license. It even has a worldwide network of repeaters. What’s more, it fits in a person’s pocket. In fact most adults and a lot of kids already have these wondrous radios.

  11. I use mine for off-roading.. any time I want to "make contacts" and find anonymous men to talk with, I use the Grindr app.

  12. All of this is just my opinion, but since you asked... I don't like or use linked repeaters. Not on GMRS, not on amateur radio. I have three stand-alone repeaters on a 6,000 foot peak and one out in the desert near Barstow. None of them are linked to anything and never will be. There is an amateur radio system called the Winsystem with linked repeaters all over the U.S. as well as nodes linked in internationally. Not only do you have to hear conversations possibly taking place in other states or countries taking up valuable local repeater bandwidth, the entire system is a target for jammers. Many of the nodes sound like crap. I find little value in linked repeaters.

  13. I think networked repeaters have their place, but I agree with you for the most part. I want at least a few unlinked repeaters so I can contact people who use the same repeater. I don’t understand hams making QSOs on networked repeaters. I do understand enjoying the challenge of “conquering the airwaves” to make distant contacts, not for the joy of talking to strangers (nothing wrong with that, just not my thing), but for the technical challenge it represents.

  14. Maybe not but at least Alinco is testing the waters. If it sells well they will likely add more models as time goes on. Wouxun needs some competition in the GMRS market.

  15. Wouxun does make some good hand held radios. The KG-935G has been a solid radio for me and others. I know a few guys that really like the KG-UV9D Mate and KG-UV8H. I've been considering the new KG-Q10H quad band radio myself.

  16. I am going to make a video about the 5 things that I've found out about it that I don't like. They're not "Deal Breakers" by any means but still, if a cheap UV-5R has these features then this radio should have them as well but like I said, I still really like this radio. That's why I bought a 2nd one.

  17. Man this topic has gotten WAY Off Topic. LOL. I simply want to say what a Great Radio I think this is(HAM or GMRS/MURS aside) and we've gotten off on FCC Rules/Regulations and the Law and Going to Jail. Almost sorry I posted this.

  18. He was jamming a repeater so someone turned him in. I don't plan on doing any such thing. Unless someone want's to be a KAREN and turn me in for owning a HAM radio with GMRS frequencies programmed into it then it's "no harm, no foul" as far as I'm concerned.

    Digital GMRS

All depends on how it's done and presented to the FCC. For years they said no to FM on 11M CB. Then one day, POOF, they said OK. While there is a crowd who don't like the idea that may become moot. In some areas digital voice modes are already in use, very much in violation of FCC regulations. If it becomes further widely practiced, like the mess with combo FRS/GMRS radios and people ignoring the license requirements, they will just throw in the towel, again, and make it legal. Saves them time, man power and money so they don't have to deal with the enforcement issues. That's basically what they did with the FRS/GMRS rule revisions in 2017. Just made what people were doing legal, then ignored the service.

    Digital GMRS

Not likely. This has been discussed ad-nauseum in a different thread. There are some for and some against but it seams the majority are against. The FCC isn't likely to give the issue any attention.

    Digital GMRS

This is a commonly talked about topic here and on other radio related forums. Do a search on this forum. The majority are against any type of digital mode on GMRS.

  22. It doesn't bother me one bit that people modify their own radios as long as they aren't idiots and causing issues. I have modified a couple of my VHF/UHF radios myself. It allow me to run fewer radios at one time.

  26. Walmart could, but, every person using a radio would need their own, personal GMRS license. EDIT: Unless the business has an old, grandfathered GMRS license as @Sshannon correctly pointed out.

  27. Most of my Ham radios have the "MARS/CAP" mod done for out of band operation. Is it legal to operate like that, no, but as you said when it's your life, or somebody else, who cares about a FCC fine. I would rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Some Hams have a major problem with people modifying their radios for out of band operation, and will refuse to use one. They forget you don't have to use it out of band. In fact not too long ago most radios had analog VFO's and could very easily go out of band. It 's the operator's responsibility to know the band limits and stay within them. Hams have gotten lazy and depend on the radio's firmware to keep operations within the band limits now days. Now on the practical side of using modified Ham gear out of band. The radios will very likely have filters on the output designed for the "official" frequency range for Ham. That's to comply with the FCC's emission requirements. Once you try running outside of the filter range the power can drop off very rapidly. It all depends on how tight the filters are. In some cases it just isn't really worth it. For example the Icom IC706MKIIG the power output at 462MHz is already low. When you get to 467MHz it's basically useless, you get as much from an HT or more. Other radios models when modified might do better. IC-706MKIIG Freqequency Mod Power Output.pdf

I don't have specific recipes to add here, because I have too many saved, but I do have probably a hundred pounds of cast iron, some of it over 100 years old, and I use it every chance I get for potatoes, cornbread, buttermilk biscuits, sausage links, bacon, Italian sausage and bratwurst, banana bread muffins, you name it. Once you figure out how to use it, cast iron is a game changer.

  29. It just seems odd to me that basically the same radio can be advertised as a "HAM" radio and a "GMRS" radio simply because it's locked to that frequency and it has the FCC Stamp of Approval. As long as I only Tx on the frequency I'm licensed for equipment shouldn't matter that much.

  30. This is what I was referring to. Liking a ham radio better than GMRS radios. Apples to oranges comparison.

  31. But the UVD1P is a ham radio and the other two are GMRS? He has just done one on the KG-UV9P which is the one I suggested to you earlier in your search. https://rumble.com/v4b0vox-shtf-emergency-ham-radio-wouxun-kg-uv9px-unlockable-amateur-radio-ht.html

    Family use of callsigns.

You got me lost; I know you're the licensee, right? I realize as a licensee, you're responsible for IDing your station. Your family members are able to use the radio. The same rules apply, even though your name is attached to the license. For example, your call sign WXYZ123, your family members would Identify with your call-sign and maybe add WXYZ123-A -1. Depending on how you and your family members want to set up communication procedures.

  35. Welcome to the exciting and dynamic world of GMRS radio! Nobody on the repeater is going to be bothered by you making sexy-talk with your wife from your handhelds, but you will likely be bothered by them, so you may want to avoid Ch16 just so they dont upset you. As for books, there are probably a lot, but you can probably learn everything you know by just reading through the old topics here.. and of course, by watching the Youtubes.
