I read about the rash of robberies happening to GMRS users, so I started using FRS instead. /s

  2. Please list the 759 reasons. I'm curious since they seem to be one, if not the only quality brand with a lot of useful features for GMRS in a hand held.

So you imagine a scenario like this? : Dirtbag "I got my gmrs radio on, let's do us some listenin!" You: Okay honey, lets stop at the next rest area, WABC123 Dirtbag "That's it, we have his address, let's drive 300 miles and hope his house is empty and unsecure" Yeah, I think you're worrying about the wrong stuff. Much more likely to have a neighbor kid break in when he sees you driving away all loaded up on what's normally a day off.

  4. Okay now that I have had more time to think on this, I'm thinking his radio just has a glitch. I have left the programming cable plugged in to both the radio and computer while turning the radio on and off each day and have not seen his issue. I am going to suggest a factory rest and see if the issue is still happening.

  6. You are correct. The hazards of not enough coffee, I was looking at the non plus manual.

This is a totally unsound scenario with zero re world issues. I’m going to bet that no one’s home has ever been broken into because they used a call sign on a radio. It amazes me what some people have the time to think About. I can’t imagine being this paranoid.

Welcome! I’m relatively new to GMRS, all things radio, and this forum too. Tons of stuff to learn and already finding this site so helpful.

  9. It's in my Jeep, the radio is under the seat along with my Icom 2730 dual band. I have 2 external speakers, one for the Icom, one for the Wouxun. There isn't any room for the 3rd speaker I found out today that Wouxun makes the cable I need so I ordered it from them

Hi and welcome! Sometimes it takes a few days for your call sign to be recognized by the forum software. It’s not a daily update. Don’t panic!!

  13. Yes there are several available themes. The startup screen is the same no matter which theme is used. It could have just been a glitch in the software/firmware. I would like to see if it reappears when the programming software writes to the radio and the radio automatically restarts when written to all while leaving the programming cable plugged in. I would not manually power cycle the radio after writing to the radio. I have not seen this happen with my XS20G. I'm curious if doing a factory rest will clear any glitches.

  15. Since we've heard nothing about someone getting fined for using a base station when a fixed station should have been used or vice versa I doubt anyone at the eff sea sea is going to be coming knocking on any of our doors to check compliance. It's probably something of a holdover that they copied in for some sort of larger station. I'm not worrying about it.

  16. I see someone has forgotten the golden rule - It's better to say nothing at all if you don't have anything nice to say. @WRNU354. I have not seen that issue with my XS20G or either of my 1000G radios. I usually leave the programming cable plugged in when the radios power cycle after sending any changes to the radio from the computer. Sorry that I am not much help here. Let me think on this while working to get the excess blood out of my caffeine system this morning.

  17. You and your wife don't need to be yelling your call sign back and forth to eachother. In fact, the frequent yelling of callsigns on GMRS is a learned dork habit of all of the ham radio people who've moved in on GMRS.

Simpler mistakes have been made over Fakebook, telling your friends you're going on Vaca and announcing it to the whole world, but those Listening as well as reading need to be kept in the DARK.

……or you could simply ignore the “rule” and avoid giving your callsign during those drives. Will anyone really care? No. Also, I seriously doubt that people are out there listing to callsigns, then looking them all up, calling other criminals in that area and coordinating break ins. Not to mention, they have no way of knowing if someone else is at the location. Sorry, but it seems like worry for no practical reason. I do suggest that you always wear a cup to protect your junk.

  23. I thought my post was pretty clear that I do not want 50 watts radiating a few inches from my face. But thanks for the links.

  24. Most 50Watt GMRS radios do indeed put out 50Watts, within an acceptable +/- % tolerance.. Further important information: You can add a user to your IGNORE list by hovering your mouse over their avatar and then clicking the IGNORE button. When done with the right users you will limit your MyGMRS experience to only actual helpful replies.

  25. They’re considered mobile radios when not called out separately and subject to the 50 watt limit.

  26. And I do the same with mine at home. That being said, it would have made it easier for mobile installs if Wouxun would change things so that both sides can be heard through a single speaker like the Icom IC-2730 does. Not everyone has room for a bunch of speakers in their vehicles. I use the Icom SP-35 speakers with all of my radios in the home and in my vehicle. They are great sounding little speakers. I even use one with my IC-7300. I have also used one with my Yaesu FTDX10. And the SP-35 sounds better than the expensive Yaesu SP-30 speaker. I tried the Icom SP-35 and Midland SPK-100 speakers with my 1000G radios and a Y adaptor. The sound was horrible and muffled even with the 20 watt SPK100.

  27. Look through the posts in this thread. https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/8037-kenwood-tk-8180-vs-tk-8180h/ While the 400-470 band split isn't certified for GMRS, just Part 90 business band use, the FCC seems to ignore people using them if programmed right. Also this band split is perfect if you want to get your Ham license later. The radio can be programmed for the full Ham 70cm UHF band too. With one radio you would have access to both Ham and GMRS. The thread above has the programming software for download if you go this route. https://www.ebay.com/p/1200813129 You can use the same radio for both a base and a mobile radio. You'll just need a good 13.8 VDC 20 amp regulated supply for base use.

I understand your point, but in order for that to happen, a number of things would have to occur simultaneously. 1) Someone would have to hear your call. 2) They'd have to know they could look up your address from the call sign. 3) They'd have to know a criminal near where you live -- because by definition, if you're away from home, the miscreant is somewhere near you, not near your house. 4) They'd have to go to the effort of contacting their buddy and telling him to burglarize your house, which they'd have little incentive to do because criminals don't burglarize a house and send part of the ill-gotten gains to a friend 100 miles away. The odds of all that happening simultaneously are so astronomically small that I don't even consider it. I just periodically check the security cameras on my phone and go on enjoying my vacation.

People have used a P.O. Box when they registered for their license. So, if somebody looked it up on the FCC database they still wouldn't have a clue where your house is located.

    VGC N76 on GMRS?

LOL, I'll roll the dice. I actually posted the question to a Facebook GMRS group, and predictably the voluntary radio police had to let me know about type certification (I'm familiar). Some of whom are public and proud with their Kenwood and Motorola radios. I guess that type certification scrutiny doesn't apply to the higher brow LMR type radios... For some reason..

    TIDRadio TD-H3 GMRS

In Ham mode, it only allows transmitting on ham frequencies. On GMRS mode, you can only transmit on the pre-programed GMRS frequencies. In normal mode, you can transmit on every frequency from 136 MHz to 520 MHz. That's pretty much it.
