  4. I emailed BTech support and got a reply that you can't program "no tone" in the software; you have to do it from the keypad. I said that didn't make a lot of sense when you have software available. She got kinda snotty with me and said, "You do realize it's a GMRS specific repeater and you can't change the repeater pairs?" I said yes, I know that, but it doesn't address my issue. She shot back with, "Most of our customers prefer to do programming from the keypad anyway." I wanted to ask, "Or do they just program from the keypad because your software sucks?" but I figured it would be pointless and just let it go. Bottom line -- you can do it, but only from the keypad.

  6. There's always that "one guy" that walks into the room and instantly puts out that "I'm here to complain" vibe. No doubt he could create a website that would be much better Sheesh

  7. The site guidelines (see number 8 ) ask that tones not be posted outside of the private area and tones that are not listed need to be obtained from the owner of that repeater on the repeater map site of mygmrs. You’ll need to send a request to the owner if the repeater isn’t open and tones are not posted.

  8. Gregory: You've only had your license for 12 days and already you're a radio einstein. Where is your computer system protection? You probably either don't have any protection or you're using one of those cheap protection systems that came from a far-away land that don't speak english. It appears that the Radio Reference Forum would be more suited for you. You'll more than likely will fit in a lot better with all the Old Duffers" and "Sad Hams" that think they know everything and don't have a clue on knowing the difference between a burnt biscuit and their dark spot orfice. You have a lot in common with them. There is no doubt that there are more than 30 of those radio einsteins that fit the bill. It's a real peach of a group for you. So, go enjoy.

  10. I just joined this "MyGMRS.com" a half hour ago. There are hundreds of thousands of both FRS, and GMRS radios, and licenses nationwide. There are only 30 members active here. I am looking at the dates of posts, and responses. Very OLD. I was under the impression, I was joining something that was growing, as more, and more people find this great communication system for friends, family, hunting, camping, and even emergency use where there is no cell coverage. I guess, I was wrong. Please let me know if im lost, or if this is what is actually here. I'm not impressed, especially since my computer had an attack from an advertiser. Where is this websites security protection. It just cost me $50.00 to unlock my computer from windows, because of this site.

  11. So that's great. You can program the repeater with no tone just how you wanted it. So you can't do it through the program, big deal. How many times do you plan on doing this? It's generally set it up once and walk away. Only in the very beginning do you play with everything. After you get it the way you like you'll rarely ever touch programming again.

  12. There is a setting for the kerchunk.. "STE" i think? I would double check for you but both of mine are boxed back up and ready to be given away to lucky viewers.

  13. It's not the end of the world to have to program "no tone" from the keypad, but it is a bit of a pain in the ass. The whole purpose of programming from software is to avoid crap like that.

  14. Sound similar to the response I got from Bridgecom when I contacted them about the CW ID cutting people off. Their reply after I had to ask several times was to just shut the ID off.

  17. The saying "never bite the hand that feeds you" definitely fits here. A lot of people over there like to give long and convoluted replies trying to show their superior intellect while proving just the opposite. I made a reply on radio reference one time and kept things as simple as possible so anyone could understand the answer and quite a few jumped on me for it.

  19. On any given day there may be many posts. I’ve seen as many as ten pages of online users (including a bunch of guests) at any one time. Easter weekend might not be typical. If you are only seeing older posts you are doing something wrong. If you spent $50 to “unlock your computer from windows” you are doing something wrong. This site pays for itself by including advertising, but you can purchase levels of membership that completely block all advertising. It’s not unheard of for people to do something wrong, but it’s fairly stupid to blame everyone but yourself. There are some very smart people on this site who would be willing to help you but you kind of burned that bridge before you crossed it. Yes, you appear to be lost.

  20. This is exactly right. Increasing the power results in more ERP, you never completely make up for the losses. And increasing the power does nothing for reception.

It appeared on mine from 2021, but as of a few months ago if you redownload it, it wasn’t appearing on people’s licenses. There was a thread about it a few months ago. Merely reprinting a license that you downloaded a couple years ago would not reflect the change. Here’s the thread:

  22. i have a Harbor Freight Telescoping flag pole mounted on my 5th wheel trailer (rear ladder mounted) that i slide a home brew Copper J-Pole with 3D printed clamps. This set up is for a portable repeater when camping. Fully extended im getting about 20-25' and with no obstructions around me i get pretty decent coverage. It doesn't take much to hamper the signal, a few trees will kill the signal quality. You should see the same type results.

Ain't that the truth. We did a road trip from Calif to Minnesota two years ago.. I would say our cell service was was hit and miss about 60 percent good and even though we had cell service didn't mean we could connect to internet most of the time.. We learned there is actually two levels of service, Cell and Internet. And even now i believe some cellular companies are teaming up with Starlink to expand cell coverage but not Internet. We now have Starlink and use it on Roaming when on the road and never been without internet connectvity since.

While i think you are very antagonist/disrespectful in a vast majority of your posts, and have a tendency to be wrong in a lot of your posts about tech and rules, I actually agree with the general sentiment of your comment. However, cell coverage is far from 99% of the US. They fudge the numbers by saying 99%+ of the population... not 99% of the land mass. It's closer to to 3.5%-4% of the total square miles of the US having (somewhat) continuous coverage, and only about 53% (which includes that 3.5%-4%) of square miles has a 70% reliability rate of cell service. Things like two-way radios and satellite communications are critical in about 47%+ of the country.

  25. This really isn’t ambiguous: Plain language voice communications. Voice communications without codes or coded messages intended to provide a hidden meaning. Foreign languages and commonly known radio operating words and phrases, such as “ten four” and “roger,” not intended to provide a hidden meaning, are not considered codes or coded messages.

  26. Just like the word "unreasonable" is arguably the most important word in the 4th amendment of the U.S. constitution, the definition of the term "Plain Language" is the key phrase in the FCC rules. Actually, the precise definition wording of section 95.303 as shown above poses a very interesting question as it is being presumed that all foreign languages, by definition, are not considered coded or secretive. It says: "Foreign languages and commonly known radio operating words...". It does not say; "Common Foreign languages and ..." The public at large cannot be expected to understand the wide variety of foreign languages that may be broadcast over the air. Clearly some recognized foreign languages are not at all well-known and in fact our own military has used this strategy expressly to create "secret communications"! "CODE TALKER" Wikipedia: "A code talker was a person employed by the military during wartime to use a little-known language as a means of secret communication. The term is most often used for United States service members during the World Wars who used their knowledge of Native American languages as a basis to transmit coded messages." As @UncleYoda pointed out, it is the FCC's responsibility to make the rules clear. At this point, I'm not sure they really are.

  27. Can you post a screen-grab of what channel 26 looks like either through the ODMaster app or Chirp, if you're using it? That'd be the simplest way to actually see what the radio is trying to do.

  30. I set up my channels in separate radio zones by creating Regions i.e. Arizona East, Arizona South, Arizona West, Arizona Phoenix and I do the same thing for California, Nevada, New Mexico Texas, and Utah. The regions will be grouped together within a State group. When I am traveling in that particular region, I switch my radio to that Region zone for the channels in that Region. If I am traveling to or in other states that I didn't list, I will create a different codeplug file for those States accordingly. My radios are programmed with almost 40 separate zones. Some Regions will have anywhere from about 20 to almost 40 channels programmed for the respective Region.
