    TK-8180 Programming Revisit

One of my TK-880 had a different (non-Kenwood) firmware, and required software called WinSJI to communicate with radio. I also used this software to flash the Kenwood firmware back. Maybe worth investigating. I think you confirmed that your cable is good and your PC is good, by communicating with other 2 radios. Edit: This what I've found: http://www.repeater-builder.com/kenwood/passport2conv.html

  5. I HAVE TWO IN USE AND ANOTHER IN PROCESSING AT BTWR. LOOK AT THE BTWR VIDEO ON THE KG-935G AS WELL AS RANDY'S. I AM DISABLED FROM A STROKE AND GLACOMA WHICH MAKES PROGRAMMING ANY RADIO FROM THE FACE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME. THE SOTWARE PROGRAMING IS EASY COMPARED TO THE 805G, 905G, 1000G AND XS-20G, HOEVER VERY SIMILAR. PERFORCE FAE EXCEEDS THE 805G AND 905G. THE ONLY NEGATIVE I HAVE ENCOUNTERED US THE HATCH COVER SHARED WITH THE 905G THAT SCRES DOWN TO MAKE IT WATER RESISTANT. THAT FEATURE IS DEFEATED WHEN USING A SPEAKER MIKE. MANY OTHER FEATURES. 6. Yea, you aren't going to find one new. One of them to track down is the Vertex Standard HX470s, you might get lucky and find one used. It did FRS (0.5W), MURS (2W) and VHF Marine.

  7. Well that explains why I'm chasing ghosts here ? You would be surprised at the number of websites that still have these radios listed, but with no stock or "discontinued". Thanks for the explanation. It looks like I'll be buying separate radios, one for water and the other for terrain.

  8. Thanks Michael. I understand we all make mistakes and the learning from those mistakes are key to cognitive growth. Yet, still licking my wounds from kicking myself so hard for such a obvious oversight on my part. I read your comments with Gadget Talk, btw, too funny.

    Mobile antenna swap

The mag mount in the picture looks quite small compared to the antenna. I'm guessing the mount is about 3" diameter, and the antenna is about an inch. I wouldn't expect that mount to work well if there were an adapter available. I wouldn't bother even looking for an adapter, and would just go with a different mount. I'd recommend at least a 4" mount, and if the antenna's more than three feet tall, perhaps even bigger, like a triple-magnet mount. Here's a 4.5" magnet mount that claims to support antennas up to four feet long. https://www.gigaparts.com/comet-antennas-cm-5m.html Here's a triple-magnet mount: https://www.gigaparts.com/mfj-336s.html There are a lot of options, but I would recommend shopping around as mounts can vary greatly in price. You might want to avoid the cheapest ones, as they may have quality issues, but you could probably get by well with a middle of the road mount.

  12. FCC rules changed disallowing the sale of multi-service radios like that. I interpret the FCC intent is to require use of separate physical radios for each communication service. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM
