  1. I like that idea. I can't afford the better radios but I do have an old Kenwood TH-75A that was given to me. Just last night I had my UV-5R tuned into a net. Every time someone un-keyed, it let out a very loud and obnoxious noise. I turned on the Kenwood and it did not have that noise. With both of them on and sitting on the table, it was very obvious the difference between the two. Even though I can't afford the good stuff, it's nice to know you actually get something for what you pay.
  2. If the UV-5R has a tone set on the TX set the same tone on RX for the 905G. If the UV-5R has no tone set on TX, then there should not be a tone set on RX on the 905G.
  3. With GMRS radios, everything above 22 is assumed to be a repeater.
  4. It would have helped if they had chosen some other terminology besides "polarity."
  5. Like you, I'm dual licensed so I just argue with myself.
  6. @WSCA774 I used https://hamstudy.org/ mostly. They have a phone app as well. The explanations are good but don't hesitate to use google to find out more. I want to get the ARRL books some day for reference.
  7. @Sshannon, @OffRoaderX Sorry, my bad, I've gotten behind on the videos.
  8. That's what I don't like about some cables, they will only charge.
  9. Where did you buy it? Radioddity indicates it comes with one both in the picture and down further under "What’s in the box?"
  10. @Taz670 Oh you've done it now! You've entered the rabbit hole and you will never be the same! Welcome and have fun.
  11. Dorothy: How can you talk if you have no brain? Scarecrow: Oh there are lots of people without brains that do a great deal of talking. Here is a link to some basic GMRS info. Welcome to GMRS.
  12. Just an FYI, If you want to give people a general location without being too specific you can use what is called a Maidenhead Grid Square location.
  13. Your biggest issue will be terrain between the houses and the repeater. 30' sounds nice but could be worthless in the wrong terrain. Make sure you can get line-of-sight from each house to the repeater and you will be ok. The line-of-sight doesn't have to be perfect like a laser but the closer the better. If you still have trees in the way, more power will come into play to get through them.
  14. @WRDJ205 I use that same mic when I'm at the park. Not a bad mic realy.
  15. It's weird how some people will whisper on the radio. As if they don't way anyone to hear them.
  16. Welcome earthlings.
  17. @Davichko5650 I don't know what "caterwauling" is, but I'm pretty sure I agree with you.
  18. Repeaterbook is primarily for ham repeaters. They added GMRS but isn't very well populated yet and will likely never catch up to myGMRS.com for GMRS repeaters. For GMRS, like @WRQC527 indicated, myGMRS.com is the gold standard.
  19. They have been making changes to the website and may have introduced a bug. Have you used the "Admin Contact" link to let them know you are having a problem?
  20. My CCR has a little button on the side that I push and talk to people.
  21. I'm with you on this one "till the wheels come off!"
  22. It will probably have that same channel 15 bug as a lot of radios.
  23. If you are in an older neighborhood, you may be ok. If you are in a newer neighborhood, think in the future. Those trees may be young and have a lot of growing to do. While you are going through the trouble and expense of putting up an antenna, it might be good to make sure the height is good for several years. That way you are out there trying to raise it in a year or two.
