I can see that there are valid points being made on both sides of this. Let me point out that, in my very limited experience, I have not been able to hear more than two repeaters at the same time. That leaves me 20 other channels to use.

@WRKC935 I for one, appreciate what you and others are doing in making these repeaters available. I certainly can't do it.

@marcspaz, @Sshannon It sounds like my idea of cutting off the excess cable would only be for convenience and not for loss, correct?

@nokones I can't give you the answers you are looking for but one thing I want to point out that may help is that you can buy mobile mount/cables with the connector shipped loose. That way you can cut the cable after install to reduce the amount of excess cable and therefore reduce the loss. On one hand I agree. On the other hand, if that Baofeng radio is your only means of communication, it just might be worth protecting. Good writeup @WRKC935 very thorough.

@Sshannon What are your thoughts on the Chinese balloon that crossed the US? It was quite large and some say it could have carried a very large EMP device.

@Blaise I assume they are just giving the accused a chance to have their say before anything else happens.

@WRQC527 Yes, it seems that they do not go after anyone for just that specific offense but like you said, they will toss it in to the mix. Interference though is definitely something they are going after and I'm glad they are. Interference is such an unnecessary jerk thing to do and should be punished.

Not everyone will be in the worst part of an EMP. I think it's worth doing what we can to protect some communications devices.

UV-5R "GMRS" with an old Radio Shack scanner antenna I had in the garage from way back. Home made adapter. Yes, I can actually talk to people with this thing.

@Sshannon Just when I think I'm joking. LOL! New technology never ceases to amaze me.

Kenwood has released a new "Conceal Cary" radio. It's a little hard to hit the buttons and it doesn't have good range but it has USB charge and it fits nicely in a pocket.

I agree, when you can afford the better items. Some of us can barely afford a UV-5R or an MP31. We do the best we can.

@WRWW910 I don't own one of those radios but if you are looking for something simple, it looks like it will do the job. If you are like some of us and want to program in every repeater known to man, it might get a little frustrating. The description says "30 GMRS channels (repeater capable), 219 programmable scanner channels (RX only)" A problem I have noticed is that even when a radio offers 200+ channels, only 8 can be programmed to transmit on repeaters, the rest can only receive. It doesn't make sense to me to have all those channels and not be able to transmit on them even when they are programmed with GMRS frequencies. Just something to be aware of. P.S. I have a UV-5R "GMRS" version and I can transmit on ALL 127 channels as long as they are programmed with GMRS frequencies.

I'm no guru either but I recognize the value of real-world examples.

I think Chirp has such a steep learning curve because they cover so many different manufacturers. Their online documentation really helps me.

A unique key would prevent inserting a row with the same node number.
