This is starting to make sense to me. I don't think I've ever seen a serial cable that delivered data and also power. There are however USB cables that deliver data and power. That being said, I think you are right that you will have to get the other cable so that you can deliver the power and data. Or just connect power and data separately.

@Chunky1 does the supplied cable connect to what appears to be a serial port?

It's been a while since I did any star gazing but I really enjoyed it. I only have a very cheap telescope and binos but it's still fun.

@nokones I'm starting to think you suffer from Baofeng Derangement Syndrome.

My CCRs are even cheaper and I don't have these problems. Can't imagine paying $400+ when I don't need to.

My 771s are Abbree. So far so good.

As @kidphc indicated, matching the bandwidth of the repeater is always going to give you better results than a mismatch.

Yep, even the Baofeng MP31(2 watt radio) has a power setting for all but the .5 watt channels(8-14).

@nokones expressed it well. After hurricane Beryl, the only coms I had for a few days was GMRS and ham radio which worked very well. But that was NOT an SHFT situation and there were repeaters that were still available. Under a real SHFT, radios may not be as useful as we would like.

As you can derive from @gortex2 post, narrowband isn't really a bad thing. You just have to use what the repeater is using.

@WSFP385 just an added note, some radios actually perform better with the stock antenna. Sometimes the stock antenna is well designed and is tuned to that specific radio and is hard to beat. I don't know if your radio is one of those.

Yep, I'm moving in that direction myself. I've made trips across Texas with lots of repeaters programmed from RepeaterBook just to find that not only is there no traffic but I don't even receive back a tail squelch. There are repeaters available but I don't like have a bazillion programmed in that I have to wade through. Edit: As far as programming is concerned, I have an AnyTone AT-778UV and have yet to successfully program it through the front plate. CHIRP all the way for me.

I'll second @Socalgmrs on the 771 antennas. I don't have any experience with the tactical antennas but I've heard they perform better than the 771.
