I know LEDs are a source of RFI but I'm pretty sure @nokones didn't have them turned on during his test. So, as far as I'm concerned, the test is still valid and the Firestick wins. Good info. I haven't bought a CB yet but I keep circling back around to the idea. If I ever do, I will likely get a Firestick for it.

This is just the sort of thing that makes me want to look into NVIS. But you have to have a ham license to do that. At one of our club meetings recently a guy talked about doing that.

@WSDU214 You aren't allowed to use digital on GMRS except for very short bursts i.e. location or short text message.

Could be CH26 or 18RP I don't remember what it is on that radio even though I have a couple. Don't worry about the offset, as long as you are on a repeater channel, the offset is already set. Forget about Zello. Request the tones from the owner. Once you have the tones, read the manual for how to set them on the radio. You can also use the CPS which is easier than manually programming. At this point, if you have a problem, start a new thread describing exactly what you have done and what problem you have encured.

@WSEZ869 Due to some recent FCC "action" if you will, many linked GMRS systems are now unlinked. There are some that are still linked but they have never been widely publicized and likely never will be. You kind of have to be in-the-know or do some scanning to find them. Good luck.

Just curious, why an ammo can for a base station. Is it also going to be a go box?

That's interesting. I suppose if you combined that with the proximity feature in RepeaterBook, you could get exactly what @WRXR374 is looking for. You could give it a radius from your location and it would show all repeaters that (theoretically) cover your location.

I love the way you put it.

I use an 8watt HT sometimes (UV-5R8W) but never notice it getting hot on full power. It does run the battery down faster but I don't have any quantitative data for you.

@WRYS709 I use Windows 10 and haven't had any driver issues. I had to use the CPS to set the frequency range but after that it has all been CHIRP.
