  1. Seams to me you have lots to think about and have gotton many opinions. If you need no bs easy answers email me wrxp381@gmail.com. I’ve helped many people set up Gmrs exactly like this for less investment that one would think.
  2. Just so you know your address is public info and VERY VERY easily obtained in about a 30 second internet search. It will also come up with old address alias’s wife kids parents phone numbers and that’s just the free websites.
  3. My uv9 works great. I hate the crew on side plate but I get why it’s that way. The only boofwang radio I have that seams works better is my 21pro v2. Either you have a setting wrong or the QC got your radio.
  4. I feel you. It took a cell outage for my wife to ask for a radio in her truck. Now she uses it all the time.
  5. Yes. I have used cb (years ago) and gmrs for emergencies. From being lost in a jeep to horse back trail riding emergencies and back country hiking to wild fire animal evacuation to weather related cell and power outages. I’ve always been willing to help any one in an emergency In my areas I’ve always had many other people on the radio being willing to help in all types of situations over the years. Radio is an invaluable tool. Now I’m part of a huge gmrs club that spans over 200miles and has over 80 members. Many monitor the radio most of the day and many are very willing the help in any way they can.
  6. I quick google search would show you gmrs frequencies. If they are not listed as a gmrs frequency they are not gmrs frequencies.
  7. That just means there are more hams and more hams listening. It’s a fact that there are waay more hams the gmrs stations.
  8. Wow so you’re saying your 5w only does 1.5miles? You got a serious issue. Unless it’s hitting major hills/mountains and at that point a 50w or ant gonna do any better. I usually get 20ish miles simplex with a $20 HT. Seams you have bigger problems then trying to get 10w from an HT.
  9. After doing what Randy said and like he hinted at are you close to it? Good line of site?
  10. Doesn’t sound like it’s very far of a run. I’d put it in some grey pvc just to keep it safe.
  11. I’d say return the radio and either stick with boof wang or step upto a wouxun or other nicer radio. You won’t transmit any further even if you get a $1000 Motorola but you can get radios with more features or better batterys.
  12. Yes I have Motorola xti3000s. Don’t care for them much. Too big to bulky to heavy and no face programming and too costly if I loose one while crossing a river on horse back or navigating the back country on a quad. They sit at home on a shelf most of the time. Only take them out when I want to impress people. Which is never. I’ve programmed literally 100s of radios with chirp and never had one problem. I try and stay with the same programming software so all I have to do is write to any radio. It takes less than a mini to update each radio.
  13. So it’s a gmrs radio. Most gmrs radios are pre programmed to 30 or in your case 52 channels. You can save upto 30 repeaters sets with tones. The rest are listen only. This is why I won’t buy a gmrs only radio. The programming issues is why I won’t buy anything that isn’t in chirp or rt systems. The rest is why I won’t buy a retivis To many people I know have major issues either upfront or in the long run.
  14. This is why my kids get uv5rs even the little ones and I just lock the screen.
  15. I do believe it’s the comet 712efc. It seams to have super mistical powers that can not be explained by mortal man. I have no idea from a technical stand point, however I have a base station (no repeater) with a 712efc and now I can transmit further with all my HTs in the property. I don’t know? I’m sure some rf radio nerd can tell us why this is the case or tell us why we are wrong.
  16. Might want to get out from under the midlands.
  17. Look here and other web pages for repeaters in your area. Listen to your radio on scan at all different times of days. Start something with your friends, family and neighbors.
  18. I’d get an antenna that doesn’t need a ground plane and find a way to put it on the roof some place. The hood will work but your going to loose signal to the rear of the vehicle both transmit and receive.
  19. Other then the obvious ar=assult radio. Hahaha i believe the ar is a tri and with air band? Maybe?
  20. Have you searched here for local repeaters near you? What part of the country are you in? Can you break into the conversations you have heard and ask? There are also other web sites that may have different listings than this one?
  21. I’ve never seen any mag mount scratch paint of any vehicle I’ve ever used one on. Or any friends rigs. Just make sure you use the rubber boot and clean under it every few months. It’s really not a big deal. Some people don’t want to drill into their roofs.
  22. Well I first “avoid” any radio that is listed as a “g” only radio. Second I’ve never had the need to do any of this stuff from the radio face. I use software on my lap top. It takes me less then 60sevonds to program or change a Chanel name.
  23. You should come out to California. We have a club that basically every member of the club gets well over 30miles with a hand held. And this is in Southern California urban areas. It’s again about line or site and antenna height and quality. This junk about hand helds only getting 2 miles is total junk. It’s 2 miles to my mail box and I can run a small 2” antenna and be on low power and still talk ht-ht with full quieting. Heck even my 5w hand held hooked up to a comet 712 does over 30miles full quieting. Pm me for real info. I’m done talking to these guys.
