  1. Have you looked into local repeaters? On this web site and others. Gmrs IS mostly bring your own buddy’s however here are many clubs and repeaters out there for fun and emergency comms.
  2. Nothing would happen. First of all was it certified when it was sold? If yes then no problem. Your covered second… what happens to the millions of people using non type certified radios from the beginning? How many licensed GMRS users have 1,2,5,10 or more radios that they use each and every day and are not and never have been certified? Nothing. .this could be a cheap uv-5r or a Motorola xts5000. Or any thing in between. I’d venture to say that there are more non type certified radios on gmrs then certified When this becomes a problem is when a user is being a complete jerk and interrupting other users. Even then it takes weeks months years or maybe never before the fcc does anything about it. And if they ever do, a non type certified radio may be an add on charge.
  3. It should be written….upgrade FROM midland.
  4. Zero wrong with chirp. The software has nothing to do with anything really. The saved channels work just the same no matter how you got them into your radio. Any radio that does what YOU the owner needs it to do and does it within YOUR price range is a good radio. Any radio that gets you comms to your family and friends or repeaters or saves your life in an emergency is a good radio. Price or what you program it with have very little to do with anything. I personally know of many lives saved in the back country, hiking, mountaineering, on horse back or 4x4ing, buy $20 uv5s. Find what radio works for YOU and learn to use it and take care of it.
  5. I have a few uv5r’s and a few I’ve-17r pro v2s NON gps. They all work fine. They have all the features of radios 10xs the price they transmit the exact same distance as my Motorola xts3000 radios All my radios get used just about every day. I love the cheap Chinese ones. 30miles across the valley is no problem and if they get lost stolen forgotten left behind or go in the river or get crushed by a horse who cares. And end the end no one on the repeaters know the difference.
  6. Yea that is correct. It is a members only repeater. Dues are only $35 a year. The repeater is huge. It has coverage from barstow and Rosamond into Lucerne and Johnson valley, slash X and down to hemet parts of San Diego, Orange County and Huntington Beach. It has loads of great guys and many events planned for later in the year. We would love to have you. I am in phelan, the owner and club president is in hesperia and we have many members in the HD
  7. This is darn near the same set up as I have. 20w tyt radio lmr400 and a comet712 up about 30’ to the tip. 234 miles is my best regular weekly contacts.
  8. Nice set up. I love my tyt radios. I run the water proof 8600s since we need water proof. Never a problem and they get beat on driving dirt roads and ranches in old trucks all day every day.
  9. Wow. I have no answers and I’m really not trying to be a jerk but I’m so glad I simply put up my antenna and it works. This type of stuff would drive me nuts and right out of radios. I hate chasing junk like this. Good luck. I hope it works out.

    Equipment Needed

Im at 4200’ in the California high desert. Yes UHF, GMRS frequency’s. I can easily talk with folks simplex and to the repeaters in Las Vegas Nevada over 200 miles away. They are at 6000ft. This is with a $100 20w base radio powered with an agm battery at 12.4 volts. IM actually putting out about 17watts from the radio. I have 50ft of lmr400 with a comet 712efc at 30ft. Im not saying that every one can do this,. What I’m pointing out is if you have line of site you do not need expensive high powered radios. If you don’t have line of site no amount of money or wattage is going to help much if at all. Heck my $20 HTs easily do 30 miles simplex and the 20w radios in the trucks do 50-60 miles simplex. Gotta get those antennas up as high as possible.
  11. I But you can do that with a $20 radio. So why did you choose the kg935g+. What made it different?
  12. One repeater can easiest do 50-200 miles. Must be a huge ranch.
  13. I’d personally save ALOT of money and head ache rand skip midland and get a good quality radio for less money or a waaay better quality radio for the same money. $100 for a 20w, $150 for a 50w. My 20w does well over 200miles so most people do not need a 50w.

There very well may be but just not listed. Might also be an opportunity to start a group. Get the radios up and start listening. Or even buy a cheap $20 hand held and listen and see what’s actually out there.
  15. TIDRADIO TD-H8 Ham Radio 10Watt 2500mAh Battery Capacity Solid Performance Handheld Two-Way Radio Wireless Programming Modul. I guess I was confused with the td-h8 ham radio
  16. Agreed. I will not own a gmrs radio for this reason. I spend too much time out in the back country to be limited in an emergency.
  17. Do you have base units? A way to put up tall antennas? A good antenna set up high up can get out a lot further?
  18. Isn’t that td-h8 a ham radio anyway? Just unlocked for gmrs?

I can do 200miles with a 20w base and a comet antenna. It’s possible. I’d recommend a 50w base station and a comet 9db gain 712efc OR even a 12db gain yagi directional if it’s only 2 locations. Get that antenna up as high as possible.
  20. You won’t notice any difference in the 5 watts difference. Even though these are “gmrs” radios the advertised watts it’s usually for vhf. Uhf is usually under vhf watts buy 5ish. Both will probably do the job. I don’t know much about the Anytone except one guy in my club loves them. The radioditty is the same as many qyt and tyt and btech units. Affordable and worlds ok for the money. I run tyt 8600s in my trucks because I need the water resistance. They do great and take abuse well.

    HELP!!! AR-5RM

Is there anything out there to listen to? Do you have a buddy to test another radio with? I have 8 repeaters near me and sometimes there is just no one on the air. Simplex sometimes has all kinds of traffic and sometimes none also.
  22. It was worth a shot. About the blue tooth.
