  1. Did you read this thread, or are you just pontificating?
  2. The windows issue may be irrelevant: Reviewing this thread, @dogboy has the GMRS-9G and the software included above it a firmware update for the GMRS-9R. Do we have confirmation from another member here that indeed, using this firmware will work on his 9G and not brick it?
  3. So many Windows drivers issues and so little time! Good luck!
  4. [post deleted as moot]
  5. I am a big fan of the Anytone AT-779UV a/k/a Radioddity DB20-G GMRS mini-mobile radio. I have two: one in the car with a cup-mount and mag-mount antenna for easy in and out and one at home with a rooftop antenna. $99-109, cigarette lighter plug, 18 watts, and has great coverage. I have multiple HTs and they are good when hiking but disappointing otherwise. Enjoy and good luck!
  6. Try this YouTube video on this subject. With this download link in the description. Which got me the file attached, but NOTE: I have not checked it for virus' PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_1025.exe
  7. 10/11 meters is great propagation during this part of the 11 year sunspot cycle but is generally dead during the down portions.
  8. I thought the Wouxun’s were unbreakable! CB too?
  9. Reduced? I am able to run Windows XP, Windows 10 and Windows 11 all on the same Mac. Plus a little known secret is that 10 and 11 do not require authentication to actually run, reducing its cost substantially. Although that means that Microsoft Support is not available, since I only use Windows to program my non-CHIRP radios, I really don't need their support. Windows XP was included in a pre-Intel Mac version of SoftWindows that I purchased years ago, and I have used that licensed version ever since.
  10. I'm sure you have heard it before, but you can run Windows on an Apple Mac using an emulator program such as Parallels.
  11. Why an old PC?
  12. Here is the 2001 version of their manual; probably the one you already have. I also find the manual's description to program CTCSS somewhat baffling! IC-F40GT_GS(E).pdf
  13. I do not have any so-called waterproof HTs, so no personal experience with the connector used in those radios such as IP-67 standard. I see that Buytwowayradios sells Icom radios that are IP-67 and I wonder if those cables would work, and are probably much more affordable. Have you spoken to Icom Technical Support about manual programming?
  14. Are you “handy” with DIY, if an adapter is an option? do you have other USB cables, such as the FTDI cable that goes USB to K-1 for Baofeng UV-5R etc?
  15. I see those cables selling for over $125 each! you are using Icom software? Does the software run on Windows 10, but fails due to the driver? Was GMRS Outlet local to Houston or mail order? im somewhat surprised that the minions here are not jumping in to help you with manual programming! No “affiliate link” I guess!
  16. The House of Representatives should open an investigation by the House Un-GMRS Activities Committee and subpoena Ham Radio operators and ask them under oath: And then ask them to name other Hams that they have spoken to on GMRS!
  17. Usb on one side; how does the cable connect to the Icom? what is the source of your cable? i like solving computer problems. There are dozens of others here that can find the manual and teach you to program it manually.
  18. OK: Let me know how it goes for you...
  19. Did you try the legacy version of CHIRP? https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/legacy-20221217/ They say it should work in Windows 7
  20. Go look at this post and see if the instructions there work for you too: https://forums.mygmrs.com/topic/6146-at779uv-programming-help/page/2/#comment-62615
  21. Prolific has problems in Windows 10 and 11 due to the proliferation of counterfeit chips. What comes up in Device Manager when you plug the cable into your computer's USB port?
  22. The more I read about problems with Midland radios, the more I am glad I have never purchased one! Affiliate link NOT below!
  23. I don't have the Q10G either, but what Computer/OS do you use in your everyday work/pleasure; since I doubt it is Windows 7. CHIRP is available on multiple platforms, including Mac.
  24. Two guesses which Congresswoman he voted for and the first one does not count!
  25. Welcome to GMRS! As you can see, some of the more vocal members of this Forum continue to press for their personal preference that GMRS is "bring your own contacts." Whether or not this is historically true, the fact of the matter is that many of the newest members here are expressing a preference for the ability to reach out and have non-family/friends contacts with other GMRS licensees, too. Some are motivated to setup new repeaters in their areas for just that very purpose. And in some geographical locations, such as Southern California, there are many established repeaters that allow and encourage non-family/friends contacts; such as the Club650 and the Santiago CREST 675 repeaters. YMMV and good luck with your use of GMRS!
