A shame that a radio as complicated as DMR does not come with its programming cable included. I suspect that, similar to the Baofeng DM-5R and DM-1701, the chip is already in the radio and the USB cable is just a passthru that does not include a chip.

I am not sure why you are linking me there. I don’t see the DM-32 included in that project either.

Just curious: why is the DM-32 preferable to the $50 DM-1701, which can be flashed to OpenGD77 firmware?

5 watts vs 2 and optionally external antennas on your vehicles will make a big difference. And of course your GMRS license extends to other certain family members. I often read many complaints about Midland radios on this forum and they seem to be overpriced

If you’re specifically interested in Channels 8-14; only certified HTs can transmit on these channels. Not mobiles, for example.

Although it looks similar, the TYT UV-88 is not the same radio as the Radioddity GM-30. Channels 8-14 are not the same power limit as other GMRS or even FRS channels. Thay are specifically limited to .5 watt.

The GM-30 is certified for GMRS and so it satisfies FCC rules for GMRS. Yes if you get a specific tool and loosen the nut, the antenna can be removed; but this does not break certification. GMRS radios can have removable antennas. You are confusing FRS radio specs. GMRS HTs can transmit on Channels 8-14.

Like Mr Natural says: “Get the right tool for the job!” Radioddity and Baofeng offer many budget priced certified radios for GMRS, FRS and MURS, as needed.

Then I do not understand what you are asking in your OP. Please clarify Your UV-5RN is NEVER an FCC Certified radio for GMRS.

My comment was about GMRS certified radios in general and in that context, I mentioned that FRS radios do not contain Repeater channels. The fact of the matter is that the Baofeng UV-5RM is a ham radio and hence can never be certified for use on GMRS.

99% of FCC Certified GMRS radios already implement Repeater channels. Typically FRS radios do not include the Repeater channels for obvious reasons.

This was a game changer for me: 5 watt HT 2 meter compatible with SSB. I added a 5/8ths telescoping antenna and have made QSOs 65 miles away.

I desided against the DM-32 after I confirmed that it cannot use OpenGD77 firmware. That has become a game changer for me in DMR.

Yes: repeaters use an “offset” to receive on one frequency and then retransmit the signal on their main output frequency. For GMRS, that offset is 5 MHz and the DB20-G is preset for that offset on channels 23-30. So when you transmit on Channel 15 it both transmits and receives on 462.550. Whereas on Channel 23, it also receives on 462.550 but transmits on 467.550. The tone is used by the repeater to determine if your signal should be retransmitted by the repeater on the offset frequency or not.

What’s even more confusing is that the premise in OP’s initial post (that the FRS channels are different than the GMRS channels), has been removed over time!

I see these statements often on forums (rhetoric or not) and am always curious what motivates the speaker to leave the confines of his (rarely a her) otherwise busy day to NOT answer the question, but yet criticize its asking! I always answer: 1) Some people like or need to be spoon-fed information and concurrently some people get gratification and are well heeled at researching and reporting the information. 2) Technical topics tend to get out-dated with time, so reviewing them with a new question (and response) gets an up-to-date answer; and 3) Posting on forums helps answer the question for others, too. One person's looking up his own answer, helps no one else! But at the end of the day, there is always someone like @UncleYoda who has a need to raise that inquiry and I am happy to fulfill that need with MY answer!
