  1. Welcome to GMRS! As you can see, some of the more vocal members of this Forum continue to press for their personal preference that GMRS is "bring your own contacts." Whether or not this is historically true, the fact of the matter is that many of the newest members here are expressing a preference for the ability to reach out and have non-family/friends contacts with other GMRS licensees, too. Some are motivated to setup new repeaters in their areas for just that very purpose. And in some geographical locations, such as Southern California, there are many established repeaters that allow and encourage non-family/friends contacts; such as the Club650 and the Santiago CREST 675 repeaters. YMMV and good luck with your use of GMRS!
  2. The UV-5R(G)(X) series of radios is an excellent "gateway" radio into a lifelong struggle of buying newer, bigger and better radios to meet your needs!
  3. Others will chime in, but most HTs use an SMA connector. the gender is determined by the post or hole in the middle, not the threading. Each adapter will generally cause some loss of power. But I use them when needed.
  4. If you can afford to put one up high on a pole with a rotor, it can be the best of all worlds.
  5. Maybe it just an "affiliate link" below?!? BTW: I just LOVE your documentaries...
  6. If chatting with your buddy is your primary objective and you can be line of sight with that altitude, get a couple of 50 watt Wouxuns and high-gain Yagi antennas aimed at each other and chat Simplex on the High Power channels.
  7. I purchased a Baofeng UV13-PRO (the Ham Radio version of the UV15-PRO for GMRS) for $20 including shipping from AliExpress and it seems to transmit on GMRS as well. USB-C battery charging, too!
  8. It is the Radioddity GM-30 in a Baofeng case.
  9. Yes, preceeded by the Henry Radio Tempo 2 meter HT with thumb wheel frequency changing capability.
  10. I have no experience with programming or using your HT, but sometimes, channels 30-39 can be DIY repeater channels and sometimes, simplex, too.
  11. I purchased a pair of Pofung BF-T11 FRS radios from Amazon and one had bad audio. Amazon sent me two more and told me to keep the originals, so now I have 3 good working ones.
  12. Are you able to transmit 462.550 simplex on another channel using the CPS programming software?
  13. Yet their prices are always the highest!
  14. Same features available for $100 instead of $400; except for 20 watts instead of 50 watts.
  15. The eBay listing I found is a cable to connect two TYT TH-9000D radios; make sure it works with the 9800 model.
  16. I’ll try mobile next time I am going east. published tone still applicable?
  17. Yes I am not receiving it in the Eastern San Fernando Valley. I will refrain from posting this comment in all the other Mesa Crest posts that you opened.
  18. Are these the same interference tactics used by those against the large footprint former 725 repeater to the West of you?
  19. More negative chatter about Midlands. They seem to be helpful to the Jeep crowd, going off road and having friends buy last minute FRS radios at sporting goods stores and Walmart, to use as well (hence why the Midlands are narrow band).
