I know a lot of people use the cheap blister pack GMRS radios from Walmart during deer season here in Missouri. Or they buy them for their kids to use. In either case, a majority don't bother to read the paperwork that comes with the radios or bother getting a license.
-
The GMRS repeater we just put up is owned by the club which is a 501c3 non profit. Our 2m and 70cm repeaters run under the club call sign but the GMRS repeater is running under a member's call sign since he has his GMRS license and the club does not. The member is listed as the GMRS repeater trusty within the club.

Yes that gets discussed a bit and you are correct that a GMRS radio that has been opened up for amateur bands is no longer Part 95 certified. Unlocking/MARS Mods are done on a regular basis and no one will say anything as long as one doesn't get stupid on the air. And thanks for the info on the AT-779UV/Radioddity DB20-G
-
From what I have found, a lot of GMRS certified radios are very hard to impossible to unlock for use on HAM bands. You will have better luck buying a radio that operates on 2/70cm and unlocking it for use on GMRS frequencies/channels. The link that @WRXB215 provided is for a dual band 2m/70cm radio. I haven't messed with bygone dual band radios so I don't know how hard they are to unlock.

I had to mess with one guy who was always giving me trouble about my cheap Baofeng radios. So I sent him this photo.
-
Actually they are very good friends and we like to give each other trouble at every opportunity

I have actually been considering getting the TH-8600 for my SxS so I can run GMRS and 2m/70cm. I know the Comet 2x4SR antenna on the buggy works well on GMRS with my Wouxun KG-XS20G.
-
Out of all the Comet antennas I have, the SBB1 is the only one that has horrible SWR on GMRS channels, the others all work well on 2m/70cm and GMRS.
-
I normally don't turn on the Roger beep but I will on occasion just to aggravate friends that don't like it.
-
The fan is noisy on the KG1000G.
-
Let me clarify my last reply a bit. When I was talking about a longer antenna, I was not necessarily talking about an antenna 30" or longer. I know that not everyone wants or can have an antenna that long. There are good antennas in the 16-20 inch length too.
-
Try the Radioddity UV-5G in CHIRP. That is what I have to use when programming my Baofeng UV-5R GMRS radios.
-
We would all like to see a perfect SWR but as long as you are 1.8 or lower you will be fine when transmitting. SWR is not as important for receiving only.
-
It could be the internal fan or it could be a number of things that are causing interference. First check for any wall wart power supplies, they are notorious for being noisy. Also check other power cables and even computer cables. Keep all of them from touching your coax cable if possible.
-
A dedicated antenna that is tuned for GMRS will be best. With that said, some 2m/70cm antennas will work just fine for GMRS with a SWR of 1.8. Though there I no guarantee that all dual band antennas will work for GMRS. I do know that the Comet GP9 base antenna and Comet 2x4SR mobile antenna both work well for GMRS.

Closest I get to off roading is driving on the county roads around me. Sometimes they will spread crushed gravel on them and other times they spread giant creek rocks on the roads. That is if they bother to even do anything to maintain them. Some of the county roads are nothing more than dirt trails. I got rid of my Jeeps, the last one was a 1962 Willys M170 Front Line Ambulance. I just Cruze around in my Honda Pioneer 500 now days. It is a little goat.

This hobby is like my other hobbies. They all can get quite expensive quickly if you aren't careful. Firearms, model trains, radios; they are all expensive hobbies. I am lucky that I have an understanding wife as long as all the bills are paid each month. A big bonus is she likes to go fishing so I can buy her sparkly fishing lures instead of expensive jewelry.
-
I always seem to forget about the Radioddity DB20G. That's another good choice.
-
It's all good. I know what it's like to have too much blood in the caffeine system. And we all make mistakes from time to time. What matters is that we realize we do.

@jdgilkey what is your budget? Retevis and Wouxun both make a 20 watt mobile. There is the Retevis RB86 and Wouxun KG-XS20G that will fit your needs. I have the Wouxun KG-XS20G and it works great. Yes Baofeng and Midland also make 20 or 25 watt mobiles. Most will tell you to get the Retevic or Wouxun over both of those though. The KG-1000G is a 50 watt radio that will need to be wired directly to the battery.

Are you restricted in antenna heights above the cab of your truck? If not, a longer antenna will perform better especially in the middle of your cab roof. I drive a 2023 Ford Escape and park in the garage so I am limited to a maximum of a 20" tall antenna. I first tried the Midland MXTA51 that came with my MXT500 radio. That antenna is 6" long. It did okay. But I do get better results running the 20" Nagoya UT-72G antenna. I would rather use a longer antenna if I could.

Poor recieve quality in new mobile rig
WRYZ926 replied to WSAB905's question in Technical Discussion
It could be a loose connection with the coax or a bad solder job. I had an issue where the tiny connector on my mag mount coat was a little loose where it connects to the PL259 connecter. I didn't notice an issue unless I was hitting bumps while driving. I suggest double checking your solder job and making sure everything is tight from the antenna to the radio. -
What is the best commercial radio for GMRS use?
WRYZ926 replied to TheNevilleKid's topic in General Discussion
Getting the Motorola software is definitely the down side. I also used Motorola radios in industrial maintenance setting too. -

Motorola hand held radios are hard to beat. We used them all the time when I was in the Army. In fact Motorola radios is all we used at Ft Irwin/National Training Center. -
8 Pin Straight Wire Mic Extension Cable
WRYZ926 replied to WRZX444's question in Technical Discussion
The KG-XS20G definitely uses the round DIN type connector for the mic. The KG-1000G/G Plus uses a RJ45 connecter. I have not checked the pin outs on the 1000G hand mic. I do know that the cable for connecting the head to the main unit is NOT a straight through ethernet cable. Pins 5 and 7 are reversed
