  1. I was just trying to log into the main site and I am getting, "waiting for code jquery" probably just never noticed before, main site could be down or running slow.
  2. If you can record or get the morse code into your computer, there are decoders online. I am glad to hear your kid is interested in radio, get him a Ham study book, he sounds sharp, no doubt he will excel.
  3. Our "Travel Tone" is again active, however we are still catching a small amount of illegal interference. If you have trouble with that tone, let me know and I will give you an alternative.
  4. indeed, I would not have a problem with a licensed user using 50 watt's into the repeater, If he was 30 to 40 miles out and such wattage was necessary for repeater access. I would also expect he turn down his power if he is inside of the standard service area and even 25 watts would be excessive. Some people just think it's all about wattage.
  5. We are experiencing simplex use on our input. The first interfering party sounds like a group of 5 to 6 persons on 2 to 4 watt hand held radios, to move boats and other marine activity. Unfortunately they have chosen the travel tone for PL. I deactivated the travel tone and ignored them until we were hit with another group, running a 50 plus watt repeater output on our input. This could not be ignored, so contact was made and the interference ended. Now we turn our sights on the group moving boats as well as some local commercial abuse. I am surprised that 15 watts is allowed on 467, since that is about 4 times more power than HT's trying to key a repeater.
  6. This morning a cruise ship pulled into port and were coming through one of our PL tones. so now we have eliminated another tone. Between them and the Travel tone abusers the input has been busy all day.
  7. Thanks John, I had no idea our input freq. was listed there. now everything makes sense, except why they chose to use the travel tone.
  8. we have a mobile duplexor already tuned to 675, but we are open to any frequency that has a quiet input.
  9. Yes, we just suspended our travel tone today. Not sure why simplex maritime activity is using the travel tone anyway. also noticing more illegal activity and abuse on the input, likely also maritime since it seems to come and go. We are monitoring other channels for a more ideal location for a proposed future frequency change. So sad.
  10. there are a few options with detachable antennas, However currently the only Baofeng radio type accepted is the GMRSv1, Baofengs are good learner radios, cheap to replace if you destroy it. I have used several models and Baofeng radios are moderately rugged and decent to excellent quality, for the price, The GMRSv1 is a little higher priced but I expect similar build quality to other popular Baofeng models. Good luck choosing.
  11. I checked, no Kiddie here, but upon inspection, I have decided to replace and upgrade several units. Thanks or the notice.
  12. As I recall, You could use GMRS for business, if each user is family licensed @ $70 dollars, adding just a few users and you would be better off getting your own business shared repeater frequency from the FCC.
  13. what you need is an elevated outdoor antenna at each site. 16 miles is easy over flat topography with each site using an elevate antenna. you will get more for your money upgrading your A.S.S. than a higher power radio.
  14. Is this Falcon a UHF antenna? or, Are you trying to RX/TX on an outdoor 2meter antenna with RG58 feedline?
  15. Use a scanner, program all the GMRS pairs in and monitor both input's and output's, using the lockout feature when radio users are detected. You will end up with the quietest pair in the end and save a lot of money having to have the deplexor re-tuned again at a future date.
  16. where is your antenna? inside? out? on the roof or tower? If you are listening to a scanner with rubber spring antenna, take it outside or outdoors antenna with quality feedline. 10M and GMRS are quite different you will want heavier insulated coax for UHF.
  17. You could, just accept the performance you are getting from your $30 radios. You could also consider upgrade one or both radios for better propagation. look for radios with removable antenna. Higher watts is unlikely to make up for less than desirable terrain but a better antenna can.
  18. I am hearing on line, that a new repeater list is being generated. Many people claiming MyGMRS list is stale and has many old listing that no longer exist. Anybody have any idea, out of all the repeaters listed, how many are actually active?
  19. agreed adds no bulk and quick deployment and as referenced, quick break down. not to mention having quick change out of HT antennas. For me BNC is a Win/Win
  20. ok, in my case, all of my HT's have the BNC adapter on them, so around the house, "where our repeater is located" I use Low power and a Nagoya Nub "BNC" antenna, combined smaller than original antenna, and more gain, and allows me to swap out to a piece of LMR400 coming from a UHF antenna on my tower for Dx'ing. and still allow for quick deployment when I get in my truck. It's a convenience thing. It may not be a "thing" for you or your application. did my best explaining. since I could not seem to up load pic's.
  21. After you install the adapter, you can use any BNC HT antenna, or connect to your truck antennas, also with BNC connectors. your old SMA HT antennas go into a box for future use or for experiments.
  22. I keep a stock of SMA to BNC adapters, they fit into the top of the radio and make an SMA into a convenient BNC connection,. This allows for quick change out of antennas and cable in the truck for roof antennas. Yes BNC is not perfect, but can add heaps of convenience.
  23. Get that antenna up as high as you can.
  24. If you have ever sweat coper pipe, there a couple good J-pole designs, easy to build and good learning project.
