If you want an antenna to last a lifetime spend a bit more and buy a DB404. I run these on all my repeaters and have yet to have an issue including when they are iced over or not. I also use one as a portable antenna on my mobile repeater and being all aluminum holds up better than any fiberglass stick i have ever tried.

I thought the BF888 was only rated at 2w high and 1w low, so I just searched some e-bay listings and found this,
Frequency: 400-469.995MHz 16 channel;50 CTCSS/105 CDCSS 1500mAh Li-ion battery; Low Voltage Alert; Intelligent Charging VOX Function; Voice Prompt; PC Programming; 3 Watt Transmit
Some e-bay listings claim 5 watt's, but then some e-bay listing make a lot of false claims. most say less than 3 watts. Even the Uv5r is only about 3.86 watts.

    Hey guys,

I'm looking to put up a GMRS repeater in the Baltimore area. Specifically, Howard County somewhere around Columbia / Ellicott City. I just wanted to see how many people would be interested in using this proposed repeater. Thanks!

LMAO  @ 50 mile range. Welcome to forum TonkaToy. Glad to have you here. generally you would contact another person in your group, a GMRS radio is not specifically an emergency radio, but can be used as such if the comms are already there. If cell service is available 911 is your best option. Best regards Jim...

Hello fello radio enthusiasts. I live in Suffolk County New York. I know their are repeaters near by. I have Two Uniden Frs/GMRS radios. I plan on doing some Kayacking this summer and want to bring the radios for fun and in case of Emergency. What channel number would I use if I actually did need to get ahold of someone in an Emergency? The radios I bought were from (West Marine) in West Islip New York. They are water resistant, float and supposedly have a fifty mile range. Thank you for any and all input... Stay Safe

    Steve,
I recently replaced an Ed Fong antenna with the Comet CA-712EFC, and it easily doubled the range of my repeater. It seems to be a great antenna.

I use 75 feet of LMR600, into a comet712-EFC. It's a very quiet setup with good range, I have also used LMR400, I  I have never had a problem with either. But Zap knows more than I. I have no question of that.

zap, are you saying that if the repeater does the ID then the callers dont have to?  I can just talk to someone in my family, using the same ID, and just let the repeater do the ID?  More specifically, does that mean that I dont have to force the kids to ID every 15 minutes, i can just say it once or maybe not at all if the repeater does the IDing?

    Hello
I only use 1/2 inch hardline for runs up to 100 feet for least amount of loss. Longer then 100 feet i jump to 7/8 inch.
Just adding my 2 cents worth.

I highly recommend you DO NOT use LMR400 for a repeater. Get some hard line. There are lots of info out there on the issues with LMR400 on duplex operations. I have tried it a few times with mixed results.

Was going to order from RFguys.com but another GMRS operator recently had issues with them. Just need to change frequency and callsign, PL, etc. Any advice appreciated. Bill.

Our Black Swamp Radio Society repeater id's once every hour and again every 15 mins while it is in use. That reminds us to id in the proper amount of time. The morse id only says "time to id." LOL It is so busy that it ids all the time. We have well over 30 licenses on it and most of us are hams too. We all get along and have a good time.

Does anyone know of a CW ID board for GMRS HT's I seem to remember seeing one for Amateur HT's years ago was just curious or is there a way of making your HT ID in morse through firmware of some kind?

Logan5 reacted to quarterwave in Why won't "Broadcastify" allow GMRS repeaters to be monitored.
I thought it may be because public safety, etc is public information, HAM is an open "hobby", but GMRS and likewise a "business" repeater or base, are more of a private deal. Not private in a "protected" sense or under some guise of privacy from listeners, but the type of communication is really not in the spirit of "action" most scanner peeps are after.

This HT is new to me and so far it seems to be a good radio....equal or better than the UV 5R and noticeably better than Cobra MRHH425.
My family has started a small radio net (there are only five of us) and  the GT3 trans/rec on a 21 mile leg was LC.

After lengthy transmissons the battery pack does get warm, but not hot.

Presently I am attempting to rig up a solar panel to work as a charger.
The price of these HT's is so reasonable each of us could store an extra radio with the charging solar panels in an ammo can for emergency use.

Logan5 reacted to KA7MBQ in KG-UV8D Not hitting repeater
I've been a ham for 30 years, but I'm new to GMRS and the group, so hi to all.

I have a problem with my KG-UV8D HT not hitting the 575 repeater. My mobile, and KG-UVD1P HT hit the 575 machine fine.

The KG-UV8D will not hit the 575 machine. It's set to wide FM, RX is 462.575 with a + 5 offset, meter shows it has 4 watts out on 467.575, tone is set to XXX.X, frequency counter shows 467,5750.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks
    Jay
