Getting back into it, I can't get it to work with quick, not enough range. Quick split is in kHz, I need 240kHz:

Even 0.5Mhz isn't going to work, since quicksplit is 20kHz (0.2MHz).
Crap. I need to work through putting a memory into VFO, then swapping it to B.

Must be one of those with a stopwatch that jumps in at 10 min 3 seconds to yell at other about identifying. Must really drive him nuts that FRS has no obligation to acknowledge GMRS rules.

I ran into a crap storm today with the kids (quick onset sickness), so I didn't get to try much. I found the quickshift setting. How to turn it on quickly is what I need to try. I just need a few free hours 😂

I'm not seeing like 7 different shifts. The 705/7300 don't care what the shift is, you program it per memory.
I need to probably swap this for my 7300 and actually play around with it on the air to figure out how best to program this.

The problem we are running into is, not all repeaters in our area are on the standard -1 MHz shift.  I have 7 repeaters stored and two of them are 0.5 MHz shift.  I can save them in memory, but the shift isn't variable.  Every time we change the shift, it changes for every memory in that band.

So, I saved 7 6m repeaters on my radio.  5 with standard offset and 2 as simplex, and just use the quick-shift feature to get the right input frequency for the non-standard offsets.

I get redundancy, but I would rather have a car charger for my portable than another radio in the glove box that I need to maintain the battery on. The portable I carry is the redundant, the mobile is primary.

Looks like it's going to have to be saved as a split.  So, save the repeater output as a memory, and then program the quick-split button for the offset you want to transmit on (menu 05-13).  That way, you can just go to the memory, and then press the Split button and you are good to go.

Almost all of the 6m repeaters programed into my radio are -1 MHz ... but there are 2 that are -0.5 MHz and that is how I ended up setting up those two.

So first of all the CCR world is the issue at hand. Long before Baojuk and others the ONLY radio you could get on GMRS was a LMR radio with Part 95 certifications. My father bought many for our local radio shops. Hell back in the day it was a crystal so no adding 50 channels. We had RPT and TA to use thats it on our Unidens
Anyway I have software for the M1225 Ive had for decades and was purchased when we bought a radio back in the day. As other said the software is pretty easy to find. Folks seem worried about finding software yet have no quams at using a HAM radio on GMRs with a mod.

I use mine for off-roading.. any time I want to "make contacts" and find anonymous men to talk with, I use the Grindr app.

Oh yeah, that's one for someone else to park a repeater with a coverage footprint that completely covers his coverage right on that frequency and leave it with a public PL and open access to all.  And advertise it everywhere.  Hell I would be almost motivated to hand out 'loaner' radios to anyone that had a license so they could use it.
    But I am like that.

@Sshannon I'm not too concerned with running digital modes while mobile. I did buy used, and it does come with a DigiRig, not sure how to set the cables up so they are accessible though. That is a spring problem.
I've used RTSystems for most all of my ham rigs (9700, 7300, 705, DJ-G7, TH-D74, VX-7, FT450D, FT3D) and its a nice simple way to program things, and copy/paste memories.
Yaesu radios tend to have great nearby rejection and great filter sets. I would expect the 891 to be the same.
@marcspaz Already started. Unfortunately it is 1 slot short to allow for 10m FM in scan.

Excited to get this in my hands and get it installed.

To avoid taking over the other thread (more than we already did), I know a few have this radio @marcspaz @Sshannon.

Mine is going to be mobile in the car, using my Little Tarheel II and the Tunematic (891 pigtail is on the way) for 6m-80m. That being  said, any tricks/tips on programming and use? I picked up RTSystems for it to get it programmed more easily. I still have to look into the memory groups thing again.

Each connector adds approximately 0.1db of loss. Other than the fact that at 50' you already have 4.4db of loss (64%) in power and sensitivity, the connector not a concern.

+1 on this. I have found many people that do not even seem to realize there is a difference, Japanese made Yaesu FT-8900 series radios, versus Chinese copy of that radio. Quality is very much an issue, and I have found many of these in state Emergency Operations Centers, often as spares or replacement for the original Yaesu. One person even told me that for the price, they expect them to fail and will replace them with another Chinese knockoff, as they can afford it. (Never mind the time to get another radio, supply chain, procurement, and so on adding to lost time as downtime).

It is emitted along the entire radiating element. Look at the average location, which would be the middle. Ideally you want the base as close to meeting the elevation of the roof line, then you won't get any shadowing from the body of the truck.

FYI, when modeling antennas for range over topography, you use the base of the antenna, if that gives you any indication on how important it is to get the entire antenna above the car body.

There was a thread where the jeep owner mounted the antenna over the spare tire on a plate. Personally, I would prefer a 1/2 wave in a similar location (perhaps the base could be nearer the roof line) over the front bumper mounts.
My understanding is that the AUS version of CB is UHF, and I can't explain why they all mount in that location other than "it's always how we did it". Keeping the coax out of the engine bay and away from other electronics, and putting the antenna as high as possible, with as much ground plane as possible would be my priorities.

A better analogy than a light bulb would be a fluorescent tube type light mounted vertically in place of the antenna.
