gortex2 got a reaction from WRUU653 in Best NMO mount?
We have migrated to this mount over time on our SAR team. Its held up the best out of anything we have used. Both in true NMO mount fasion (in a roof) as well as on fender mounts and other not normal installs. The enclosed cable on the bottom of the mount keeps water out and we found it worked better in fringe areas on simplex. I still use the standard NMO from MSI/Larsen/Laird/PCTel on our UHF TLMR stuff but anything VHF is the Larsen one now. When possible I use them on all mounts. My new work truck as 6 mounts and all are the same.

Maybe you are confusing Chinese "pot metal" with quality brass that is alloyed with zinc? I can assure those mounts are quality, definitely from a metallurgical perspective.

Larsen NMOKHFCX is probably the best mount out there right now. Any Larsen, Laird, PCTEL, Motorola mounts are good.

gortex2 got a reaction from WRUU653 in Wideband Interference - Oh my!
So it only happens when Jeep is on ? Alot of folks add aftermarket LED lights to jeeps that casue a ton of interfearance. If its only when key is on or running I'd check to see what turns on with the key. If its present regardless then its a radio issue.

gortex2 reacted to nokones in 999 Channels For… ?
In my Motorola XTL5000 UHF mobiles, I have 35 Zones with a combined total of 860 channels programmed with GMRS for coverage in six states, and several business radio service channels. In my Motorola XTL2500 VHF mobiles, I have several business radio service channels in about ten zones in various channel configurations.
In my XTS5000 UHF portables, I have 43 Zones with about the same number of channels, not to exceed 16 channels per zone. In my Motorola XTS5000 VHF portables they are essentially programmed the same as my VHF mobiles.
Oh, by the way, it appears that these series radios will not allow you to program more than 50 zones.
I think it is stupid that radio manufacturers design a 1,000 channel radio without any zone banks. Can you imagine trying to zip through a gazillion channels in one zone. Typical $20 POS CCR, and without PL Defeat/Monitor, Home Channel, Display with more than 6 characters, and Talkaround features.

gortex2 reacted to OffRoaderX in Programming VXR-7000 with Ham frequency?
The VXR-7000 UHF version will transmit only from 400-430mhz and 450-480mhz. Remember that if you change the frequency you will also have to re-tune the duplexer .. but an out-of-tune duplexer will not prevent you from making the change.
SOURCE: I have one and I read the user-manual.

gortex2 got a reaction from DeoVindice in CERT team
A true non profit can get a part 90 license pretty easy and depending on the organization pay no fees to the FCC. The issue in the end is people dont want to put in the work. CB, HAM, FRS, and MURs is more than most really need to be honest. CERT can easiliy be a non profit or work under a county umbrella to get licesenced. I guess it really depends on the organizational needs but the other simple mode is VOIP apps. Zello or other apps are jsut as good as radio comms 95% of the time. Using a combination of FRS and voip for an application can work well.

gortex2 reacted to marcspaz in Could FM CB supplant FRS?
I understand what the science says, but real-world, yes. I spend a tremendous amount of time out in the woods while 4-wheeling, and FRS HTs have always out performed stock CB radios... like 100% of the time. GMRS radios running 20w+ usually outperform modded/peaked CBs around the same power.
Again, we are talking about an overwhelming number of CB users with poor-bad installation, poor antenna selection, etc. There was one CBer I wheeled with who was the tail vehicle on a 12 vehicle group, who's radio was so bad that I could see him in my rear-view, but couldn't hear him on the radio. I don't have any experience out in the woods with people who had good radios.

gortex2 got a reaction from SteveShannon in Hardline Connecters
Normally when the 7/8 hardline enters the building/shelter it goes to a polyphaser on the bulkhead. From there you would use 1/2" superflex to the N on the kenwood. 7/8" is the feedline for the tower only.

If you are really intent on tracking it down, look into the KrakenSDR - it will cost you, but it will take you to their front door in a matter of minutes - literally.
SOURCE: I had one and used it to track down several repeater-jammers, one of them whilst he was driving in his car

gortex2 reacted to OffRoaderX in Multiple repeaters at same frequency
That's a H.A.M. radio, not a GMRS radio, so now you're going to have to do everything manually.. Find a channel, enter the transmit frequency and the offset, and the tones.. I'm sure someone will chime in with all the details, but, I'm out.

gortex2 reacted to tweiss3 in CERT team
Any CERT team should not be using the cheapest radios they can find. In that case, stick with cell phones or zello.
For a club, why wine, just use FRS radios for $15/each and not worry about licensing.
For GMRS, you are required to use a GMRS certified radio, not a MARS ham radio. I've bought plenty of Kenwoods for what a majority of those certified CCRs cost.
There are too many places that people want to be cheap where they absolutely shouldn't. CERT is working with someone's life. Motorcycle clubs, you are riding a $45,000+ bike, and won't spend a few hundred bucks on a decent radio? I just don't get it. It's not like you won't spend money, you just won't spend it on the appropriate radio communications because there are $11.99 radios on amazon and "that's such a deal, it just has to work well enough". The options are there, you just won't hear it: 1) Stick with FRS, and have no licensing, 2) Have every member responsible for their own GMRS license or 3) get appropriate LMR licenses and radios, which in the long run doesn't actually cost more when you drag it out over a 20+ year lifecycle.

Power issue. Yo udont have enough current for the radio to stay on. What kind of battey are you using and is it a good battery ?

gortex2 reacted to OffRoaderX in MDC signalling on GMRS.
In my GMRS group it serves a very important purpose and is very necessary.
If that makes you sad, you are free to go listen to a different channel while we are all transmitting our MDC-squawks.

gortex2 reacted to SteveShannon in Repeater Planning Series: “The Six Most Common Mistakes" [Contains Stupidity]
I think the fairly common rule prohibiting political speech on a privately owned repeater is a good one that makes repeater use more enjoyable for most users. That has nothing to do with being “big headed” or forgetting which country a person lives in. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution never has guaranteed that anybody can say anything anywhere at any time. When we use someone else’s repeater we need to be considerate of the rules.

gortex2 reacted to WRYZ926 in Repeater Planning Series: “The Six Most Common Mistakes" [Contains Stupidity]
It's a shame that happened like that. We decided right away not to even consider linking our GMRS repeater. We already have our 2m repeater linked to AllStar.
We don't have many rules outside of following the FCC regulations on our repeater. The three big ones are: no foul language, no discussing politics, and no business uses. We are strict about no foul language since there are kids that use our repeater on a regular basis. And politics usually leads to arguments.
After talking to another local GMRS repeater owner, we decided to follow his advice and not allow business use. He had a big problem with the big commercial farms wanting to tie up his repeater and we didn't want that to happen with ours.
We checked Repeater Book and My GMRS along with listening on all of the repeater channels first. We then reached out to the other GMRS repeater owners within a 50 mile radius of our location. SO far we have not had any issues with unlisted repeaters. We do occasionally pick up a different repeater on the other side of the state when there is a band opening.
Merry Christmas everyone.
