  1. @WRZB493 Yes. Repeater tones are almost never used in GMRS. Ignore them for now. Try different levels; see what works for you. Correct, VOX is usually left off. TOT - leave it at the factory setting, whatever it is. CTCSS/DCS questions - read the forums and make up your own opinion. But anyone can hear you. ANI - play with them and let us know. DTMF is commonly used for repeater control. Some people scan the channels listening for other people. I don’t. Suit yourself. Very few people (I’ve never met anyone who does) use PTT ID in GMRS. Busy Channel - your choice. Auto keypad lock would drive me nuts. Make up your own mind on this one. Like most of your questions, try things. For GMRS the offset is always 5 MHz positive. You transmit to repeaters in the 467 MHz range and listen at 462 MHz range. Try it. Try it. Try it. Whew.
  2. You deserve to hear this: you were right and I was wrong. The power indicator rotates through H, M, and L, with no other indication and I completely missed it.
  3. Could you take the factory shark fin antenna base off and add an NMO or other small base to it, then remount it. That might allow you to run the cable inside also without worrying about pinch points.
  4. Questions about site features might be better in the mygmrs.com forum: https://forums.mygmrs.com/forum/6-mygmrscom/ There is a thread there named "Repeater Listings Format" but a quick glance didn't reveal anything. Sorry.
  5. And "Double Waiting". That might actually be truth in advertising. I guess that anyone who buys one of these can't say they weren't warned.
  6. Yes, you can glare at it as much as you want and it bounces right off!
  7. 77 inches! I could replace my TV with that!
  8. Eventually it will be older and then you’ll drill the hole. Then you’ll realize how well it works and you’ll wish you had just drilled it earlier and gotten the enjoyment out of it. It’s just like houses. I see so many people who wait until they’re selling their houses to fix them up. All they’re doing is depriving themselves.
  9. I’ve learned not to rely heavily on hope. I reported your post. That way Rich will see it for sure.
  10. Go to the section of the forums dedicated to the nets and browse the posts there that mention the mygmrs Net: https://forums.mygmrs.com/forum/19-national-and-regional-gmrs-nets/
  11. Do you have an analog meter and you’re seeing no deflection?
  12. Unless the guys discussing it were actually from the FCC, it’s probably speculation. Regardless, I would be against it. There are a whole bunch of unlicensed people out there who enjoy those frequencies for FRS..Taking nearly a third of the available frequencies for digital service would be bad enough; taking nearly two thirds for digital repeater use only leaves the eight channels that are available for analog repeaters now, effectively ruining the entire service for analog users when all those people are displaced from the first 14 channels to the upper 8 (15-23)
  13. We’re coming next month for Thanksgiving. We might be there for 10 days or a couple weeks. No idea yet what day we arrive or leave.
  14. I have an FT-4x and I like it. I like the FT-65r even better. But to repeat @OffRoaderX, there’s no need for unlocking. The exact same frequencies can be received whether the radio is locked or unlocked and reception is all that’s necessary for RDF. That very wide receive range is typical of nearly all modern radios.
  15. I don’t participate in the contests. Perhaps the majority of us don’t. I have no problem ignoring the contests. On summer Field Day our club provides comms for a bicycle race.
  16. Apparently you missed a few of the details. The OP didn’t take it. The people who found the coax loaded it and took it to a place where the rightful owners should find it.
  17. In my post above, my radio was opened up. I use it strictly as a ham radio (no GMRS), but it still doesn’t allow changing the power using the Fun button and the 0/Pow button sequence. Pressing the Fun button puts it into Fun mode. Pressing the 0/Pow button takes it right back out.
  18. It might not even be a problem. It may be that the repeater is identifying itself, possibly with Morse code even, and that it’s programmed to do so without CTCSS. If you remove the CTCSS (or DCS) Code on your end you might be able to hear what it is.
  19. It might just be a mistake, like two tests stuck together.
  20. Call your VEC.
  21. I did that (switched from memory to VFO) too. No difference. I guess you could take the computer outside.
  22. I had to go try it on mine. It doesn’t work for me either.
  23. I don’t. I will sometimes listen to ham radio though.
  24. What’s the backup plan for people in Seattle, Detroit, etc?
  25. For anyone who wishes to know what questions are on the technician tests, there are 35 questions drawn from a pool of slightly more than 400 questions. Each category has a certain number of questions on the test. The current pool is valid through 2026. Here is a link to the pool: http://ncvec.org/downloads/Technician Pool and Syllabus 2022-2026 Public Release Errata March 7 2022.pdf I did almost all my studying using the following free website (and an app they make which I gladly paid $5 for): Http://www.hamstudy.org
