My understanding was not that they didn’t want people to check on their neighbors with a radio in hand, but that they didn’t want people mounting overly ambitious uncoordinated efforts that might interfere with the official efforts and taking additional risks to check on people, if by doing so they might have contributed to a situation that stretched out the already too thin resources. But instead of seeking to coordinate with the very willing additional volunteers they drove them away with their heavy handed tactics.

I’ve only used the Midland NMO mag mount. It is what I started with and I’ve found no reason to switch. But I do get a broken signal on transmit (meaning people report that my signal is broken) sometimes when moving on the interstate. Maybe it was just picket fencing. A friend recently bought a Comet magnetic base NMO mount (CM-5NMO) and it is slightly larger diameter, looks and feels well built, and appears to sit flatter. He and I have conducted tests where he is driving to the I-15 interstate, up over the continental divide, and north on his way to Helena which was the same path I had traveled earlier. Although eventually a weak signals prevented reception I never heard any breaking up while he was in motion. It’s a sample of one, so really only anecdotal, but it was noticeable to me. It’s not enough of a reason to dump the Midland mount, but if I were buying a new magnetic mount NMO, I would try the Comet this time. It’s about $33 at the usual ham radio shops.

Just push the button marked “Mon” or “Moni”. You might want to turn down the volume first. That’s exactly what it’s for, temporarily listening to a frequency with no squelch.

Then contact someone with a tower (ham radio club possibly) and ask for a price to place your antenna on their tower and your repeater in their building.

Mount it to the metal roof of the truck instead of the composite roof of the topper. The radiating element will stick up above the roof rack.

The 2x4 antenna you already have is one of the best for multiple bands. Try it on GMRS.

I think most people who use GMRS do so using GMRS radios. They are people who simply buy GMRS radios to use while doing other activities. I also think that a significant number of the members of this forum do not use GMRS radios, because they are the more like GMRS radio hobbyists.They are the people who learn enough about the radios to repurpose other radios. This forum’s membership is not at all indicative of most GMRS users. We are the users who talk about GMRS even when we’re not using GMRS.

That sounds correct. Only channel 43 allows you to change modes. Channels 39-42 each display something else. Here’s what I found: “Test mode enabled by pwr down, hold func+F4 and power up/Enables CH39 to 43 to be selected. ON 43 hold ptt in and can then rotate selection knob to change the mode ie broadband TX all vhf and uhf frequencies. Release ptt to save. Power down and back on, radio comes on in new mode. also CH-39-42 is selectable shows 39= RF FW version 1.10, 40 = CPU V1.11, 41 lcd V1.10, 42 = mode:02 amateur, 01 fixed, 03 broadband unlimited TX.”

Read the one that’s already on the radio. You should always do that first anyway. Then look at what you want to change, which will be unique to your location. Change or add channels as needed and then write it back to the radio.

Is there an AGC setting on the MXT275? Make sure it’s on. I doubt there is one, but on my radios that have it, it’s miserable working a mix of near and far people without using AGC.

How much power do you want and what bands do you want to transmit on?

The fact is that they’re narrow band can make them sound quiet compared to wide band radios. If you like the small form factor take a look at the Radioddity db20g, which is a small 20 watt transceiver that seeks for about $90 when it’s on-sale. I have two of them. The only con I have experienced is that they do suffer from a lack of different ways to program them and the factory software is lackluster. Here it’s considered a secondary infraction, meaning they cannot stop you for failing to wear your seat belt, but if you commit a primary infraction you can be cited for any secondary infractions as well.

Repeaters transmit on 462 MHz frequencies. But you must transmit to the repeater on a 467 MHz frequency. It’s possible that you’re transmitting on the same 462 frequency as the repeater transmits rather than the 467 frequency needed to get into the repeater. If that’s the case your signal could sound weak to them if they hear it at all. Make sure you use a repeater channel.
