$70-club? Phufffff. Whiners, no sympathy. There are people here who are members of $90-for-5-years-club. Some people are more than once members.

IMHO, it is reported in the federal register calling for comment by the public on or about Dec 28.  So from my days reading the pink sheets as it is called, 30-60-90 day so makes it Jan, Feb or March.  Then as you said will take them 30 days to make the changes on the web site.  Welcome to the "I paid $70 Club".

Ok, let's try to keep this in scale. If one were to renew for $70 the day before the new price went into effect. The total extent of the "damage" would be $3.50 per year over the 10 year life of the license.  That is $ 0.0095 per day, $0.067 per week, or a whopping $0.29 a month.

IIRC, as a federal regulatory agency, it will be 30 days after they officially announce the change that it will go into effect. They said that in their response as well. Unless I missed it, I don't believe they have officially announced the change yet so my renewal would pass by and I have too much set up with our call sign to let that happen.

Hans and mainehazmt, wait for the last minute or next to last day and see if it will be reduced before Feb 2021.  I'm a member of the "I paid $70 Club" and for $7.00 a year it ok...  Well work taking your call sign if you like it..

    Learning the hard way:
Wanted radios that work better than FRS cheapies you find at Lowes/Home Depot. Bought 5 watt Midlands GXT1030. (fail) Knew I needed FCC license but didn't know to wait for 1/2 reduction in fees (fail) Happen to see a repeater in south Charlotte and thought "cool" I can use that with these radios (fail)

It is the limited number of channels on GMRS that makes multiple places to put the same frequency with different PL/DPLs even more important.

I find it very frustrating to have to manually re-program my radio just to change PLs.  If the channel I use at home uses GRMS 7 with PL 162.2 but a jeep group I sometimes ride with uses GMRS 7 with another PL then I have to stop on my trip up north to re-program the different PL.

I think it is the thousands of channels (frequency plus PL/DPL) available on GMRS that gives GMRS such a  powerful potential.

Concur!  The key is the comma in : New licenses, modifications
That should be read as New licenses and/or modifications.
And, there is the new license $35 fee!

In my past life I would read the Federal Register pink sheets which is after posted, printed, will be the rule 30 days from posting unless the objections are overwhelming... So in 30 day it will be the new rule...

The GMRS fee is still $70, but only because the new fee structure has not gone into effect.

GMRS, amateur, and a lot of others are classified as "personal licenses" and they will all be $35 (page 85 of the PDF in the first post).  Thankfully, change-of-address will not have the fee.

EDIT:  I see the what n4gix means.  Seems the FCC document is a bit contradictory.

That is incorrect. The actual fee for a GMRS license is not stated at all. The reader is told to refer to the Wireless Tellecomunications Bureau Fee Filing Guide. As far as I know the fee for GMRS is still $70...

AFAIK, it was a carve-out to specifically allow the Garmin Rino line of radios to continue to operate. So far, the FCC has continued to block DMR on GMRS except in a certain instance, IIRC, where someone requested a special license allowance for DMR to do testing/research.

I believe that is only true when operating through a DMR repeater. The repeater supplies the sync signal so each radio knows when to transmit based on the time slot selected.

When operating simplex there is no sync signal to determine which of the two times slots is slot 1 or slot 2.

One of the interesting aspects of DMR is with the right programming of the firmware a radio could supply the sync signal. In the case of the D578UV, from what I've read, can do this thus you can run a single frequency repeater, no offset or tuned cavity filters required. There are some other DMR radios that claim to have the feature as well.

Yep, I am aware. However, it was made perfectly clear by local hamsters that the ostracization and the intentional QRM that would follow on any amateur repeater that I put up without coordination would make it annoying and mostly unused and unusable. It's like that in my AO. Then, there is the limitation on work traffic and the individual license factor for family members and friends' families. GMRS solves all of those problems for us here.

Found a function on the MXT400 the other day that I didn't see in the manual. You can scan for CTCSS or DCS on a channel if you long hold the CTCSS/DCS button. The codes will start scrolling. If there are active communications on that channel, it will eventually pause on the code. I've use it on the repeater channels to help figure out repeater tones if there's chatter.
