I agree with the first part of your post but I believe an open repeater means the owner is inviting others to use it. You will know if it’s open or not by it being listed that way. Also why does a squelch tail or roger beep mean it’s an open repeater?

If you are in Southern California you can hear info on the tropical storm coming on the NOAA channels. A first for California. I am picking up info at 162.400 and 162.475 north of Santa Barbara.

@rdunajewski Another seven duplicates posted. This time from WRYH413. This has become so common. Others who have done this said it was by mistake. I wonder if there is a way to fix this problem? Add a pop up when posting a repeater that request verification of ownership? Enter password to verify you own this repeater? Changing the phrase “my repeaters” to “repeaters I own”? I am not a coder so I have no knowledge of the best way to fix this but it seems like it is worth a look.

At least you gave it a shot. Now you have a legitimate excuse to get that other radio you always wanted.

Not sure when you are planning to go but be advised still getting into triple digits out there.

I have never taken one apart but it wouldn’t stop me. I would at least open it up. You’re not going to make it worse. I would be interested to see if the display became partially unplugged from the board when it dropped.

Nice. Where does this info come from? I only pulled info from Mygmrs.com repeaters active and open (no stale and no offline) which has already changed.

I guess it transmits on weather channels too. No problems there…

I know some here have mentioned they can’t get their spouse interested in radios so getting neighbors interested may be a challenge. On the other side of the coin @WRHS218 has stated he bought one for his neighbor because they share a well in a rural area that has power outages. A great solution for their needs. Depending on your circumstances it may or may not appeal to others. Keeping the radio’s simple as @Sshannon mentioned may help to sell others on the idea. Also @marcspaz is putting together a video that you may consider sharing with your neighbors interested in GMRS.

Something you may want to consider aside from the radios is a neighborhood Facebook page. Our neighborhood has one and it has been helpful for getting the word out about an escaped dog, a block party, offering equipment to knock down vegetation in fire season and so on. It can be invitation only so it’s just your community and it doesn’t cost anything.

From what I can gather (not having one in my hands) it looks like two separate radios in one. The upper being GMRS and the lower being ham. I am curious if you program the upper and lower separately.? They state 512 channels and Randy says it’s 256. This has me wondering if they program the two separately. IDK though.

Did you really think I was saying that there were 917 repeaters in Sacramento? You forgot to add the permission required to that number for a total of 1,353 if you really thought that’s what I was saying. I mean that’s some coverage. I have seen this statement before about “most repeaters needing permission” in another thread recently (I’ll link it if I find it) and it caught my attention because my area is mostly open and I was curious if in fact that was true. Sorry I misunderstood your meaning. I didn’t mean it as a personal attack. I just thought it might be a misconception. If I had to guess perhaps the more populous area’s have more “permission required” repeaters, though I certainly don’t know that for sure. As for Sacramento they seem to have a lot of repeaters and I think it’s a shame more are not open.

Actually the map page shows 917 open repeaters to 436 permission required. So most don’t require permission. You can’t even access the repeater info without a license though.
