  1. I went with JAX676 due to the tones
  2. Hi Dave I looked them up on the map, if you select the gear in the upper left corner and turn on stale repeaters they both show up. It is likely the owner needs to just go in and update them. It's been said that the owner just needs to log in and they will update.
  3. I wish I could help on this one... I do think the alternator may be a good place to start but it's puzzling that it would only effect when tones are enabled. ?
  4. I use said flashlight to take the dog out at night ?? ?
  5. On the map page there is a gear icon in the upper left hand corner. Click on it and select stale and offline repeaters. I think you’ll find your repeater there. I’m thinking it’s JAX675 but there are a few near you. ?
  6. Think of tones like a key, the TX on your radio will unlock access to the repeater, the RX on your radio keeps out everything but the repeater (or anything with the same tone). That’s why with no tone set on RX you will hear everything. As I mentioned the tones don’t need to be the same. I hope this helps. Perhaps you can use the map and see where the repeater is and if it’s open or not and what the tones are.
  7. That is most likely the case but they could just as easily have a completely different tone for the the receive on the repeater in which case they would not hear you also. Just because you hear them on one tone doesn’t mean they will hear you with the same tone on your TX.
  8. Okay, with no tone set on your radio you will hear everything including the repeater. You may not be in range to reach the repeater. You may not have the correct tones to access the repeater. Tones for TX and RX don’t necessarily have to be the same even though they often are.
  9. They may be out of range for you to reach. You say you have the right ctc tone. How do you know? Are these people you know? How can you be sure what tones they have set or if they are simplex or repeater? Just some questions to try and help solve your problem.
  10. His name is Carl and he’s good with the burger meet up ?
  11. because all the really good looking girls are going to go out with the satellite phone guys because they got all the money
  12. 1)What constitutes hiding? Really? This is a question? The act of concealing; concealment. If you’re doing it to hide what you are saying it isn’t legal. Not difficult at all to understand. 2)What is a ten code https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten-code 3)At what point am I not hiding my code? When other people understand it, you know like the people at the FCC for example. …sigh
  13. Thank you, this ^^^ you say you’re not a lawyer but didn’t you stay a Holiday Inn once ?
  14. I would add you have a cell phone. It’s okay to use your cell phone. I mean seriously if you want a private conversation radio isn’t it. Sure there’s encrypted radios but that’s not GMRS. Op is looking for a solution where there is no problem. I’m 10-98 ?
  15. Well maybe east coast is different than west coast, I hear 10 codes in public safety all day long here. Police, EMS, Fire… https://www.lospadrescounty.net/et/codes.html
  16. Do you like simple or more bells and whistles? I think you may find many opinions on this topic which can’t hurt. My picks… Midland MXT575 for the simple. I like the controls in the hand set. Reputation seems good. Wouxun KG-1000 for bells and whistles. Lots of programmable space for repeaters, duel listening, scanning, superheterodyne I have been thinking this very thing over and it’s a tough one. I can do a lot with my HT’s and I feel like I’m leaning toward simple on the mobile. Look forward to hearing what others think.
  17. If only this had been covered before… https://www.travelchannel.com oh yeah.
  18. You never actually need the receive tone. Setting a receive tone only limits what you hear so with no tone set you hear everything on that channel. Setting a RX tone on repeaters that have both insures you will only hear an output of the repeater but you may be missing simplex on the same channel.
  19. I’m not sure if you are aware of this but on the main map page if you go to Edit User Profile you can select Weekly Repeater Digest and you’ll get an email every Monday on any changes to repeaters in your state. I just thought of this as I received mine this morning.
  20. I do like this kind of stuff. I guess that’s why I took things apart as a kid. Thanks for sharing @Sshannon . I’m guessing the radio is okay as you didn’t show the insides of it, so that’s good news ?
  21. The repeaters on mygmrs.com will disappear from the map if they haven't been updated in a years time. You can still find them by selecting the gear in the left hand corner and select stale repeaters. So that keeps most of the stuff you see here up to date. I can't speak to how they keep things updated at Repeaterbook.com but why do you feel they are outdated on this site?
  22. I have a few Wouxun radios and they're great but so is my Boefeng UV-9G and GT-3WP. They don't cost much and after dialing in the squelch they perform nicely. I don't have to worry about damaging an expensive radio if I take them hiking and I like that they have a little more pause time before continuing to scan in CO than my KG-935G Plus and quite frankly the battery fits tighter than my 935 as well. People here bag on Baofeng all day long but I have never gotten a complaint on the other end and they have their purpose. I can only speak to the two models I have but I would add that putting people down for having what they can afford because you can afford more doesn't make you better. Not that anyone here does that...
