Baofeng GT-3WP Ham and the Baofeng UV-9GGMRS are exactly the same radio. you'll get the program cable with the UV-9G that works for both and if you are so inclined the GT-3WP can be unlocked.

I totally get that and I thought your question and post was a good one. I hope it didn't seem like I was pushing back on it. Thus my comment on the repeater owners strick enforcement rule (he stated he would "fart in the general direction" of people not adhereing to the rules. ?). A lighthearted non threatening approach. As long as people are being respectful and polite I'm okay with our Canadian neighbors on the airwaves.- 26 replies

I don’t think I would know if they didn’t tell me. I don’t make a habit of verifying people’s call signs. I’m also not working for the FCC. Unless I am personally aware of some truly nefarious activity l don’t care if other people jaywalk. That said I’m sure there’s more that I’m not thinking about here and am interested in what others think. Also this repeater owner has a pretty strong penalty for not adhering to the rules. ?- 26 replies

In Chirp setting duplex to off for a frequency will prevent you from being able to tx in that frequency. At least it does on my unlocked radio. That’s what he is attempting to do. For some reason it isn’t working though. He’s trying to lock out selected frequencies not enable them.

Yes but that’s what he would get to talk to his wife, if he wanted to talk to her. ? -
I can understand that. I thought of doing that myself but my want list keeps growing. ?
-
Sounds like it’s time to buy a GMRS radio maybe. Then no worries.
-
I understand what you are trying for and it seems like you have done things correctly. Wish I had the answer. Good luck.
-
Yeah I know. I could have worded that better.
-
You can’t in Chirp. I was just saying it doesn’t lock frequencies out in frequency mode that’s all. Sorry for the confusion. You look like you have things correct so the only thing that seems different to me is that you changed things before the reset so I don’t know if that had an effect. I would try resetting again but do so at your own risk. Maybe someone else has run into this.
-
Maybe this guy can help.

On the GT-3WP it has either channel mode or frequency mode when using. Chirp only locked out frequencies in channel mode. I changed my settings after the unlock. I don’t know if it makes a difference but I figured it would. You may be able to do the unlock again and then go and change your settings. I’m not really sure. Sorry I’m not more help on the 5R.
-
I don’t have the UV-5R but I have a GT-3WP that is unlocked. I think you’ll only be able to turn off tx in channel mode by selecting “off” in the duplex column for each frequency that you want to restrict. In frequency mode I think you’re gonna have to avoid the button. I hope this helps.

I have had great results with the Nagoya 771G on my BaoFeng UV-9G. The size is a factor for me though. I mean you’ll put your eye out, lol and not all that easy to deal with on your hip while hiking. So I found myself more often than not using the stock antenna instead. So I ordered the 701G because it’s only five and an half inches and I really wanted to use an antenna tuned for GMRS. I compared it to the 771 and it seems that the 771 is slightly better. I expected that. What I didn’t expect was how much better the 701G is than the stock antenna which is duel band. Even when listening to VHF frequencies it seems just as good as the duel band and on UHF I’m getting some frequencies that just weren’t very clear before. I have no problem hitting the local repeater and things are clear. It is my new go to. I love it so much I ordered two more for radios I haven’t even received yet. YMMV but for me I’m sold.

That I was not aware of. I see people on here talking a lot of networking repeaters and this always seemed more Ham like and less mobile, family, friends and short conversations. Nothing against it and I could be wrong. It just seems like an area that lends itself to the very things being complained about here and more embraced by the Ham community. Right tool for the right job so to speak. I am fortunate here… rag chewing goes on but it is on Ham. I’m cool with that. GMRS is kinda quite but you can get a radio check and if you need an open channel it’s there to be found.. -

Does anyone see the trend of linking repeaters as part of the issue??? It’s as if some people forget what the M in GMRS stands for… Yeah, that wont ruffle any feathers. Discuss amongst yourselves, I’ll be on the side monitoring. ? -
As for the repeaters I just have one separate bank programmed that way and labeled them Travel 1, Travel 2 and so on. The local repeaters or ones in places I have put in I still program in with their name (in an separate bank) even if the settings are the same so I know what repeater I’m on. That’s just how I chose to do it.

No PL required for simplex. I personally just scan the gmrs channels.
-
For your infotainment ?

Oh boy this is a subject that has been discussed at length but first let me address the repeater part of this. PL 141.3 is a common tone used for open repeaters, not restricted to any particular channel/frequency. I have all eight repeater channels programmed with this for travel. Not to be confused with the channel used for travel. Good practice to make sure the repeaters you may access doing this are indeed open. it’s easy enough to ask if you get on one and if not how to get permission. The generally accepted off road channel is 16 (4x4) and many have adopted 19 though others use 20 for highway. This has been debated to death and you won’t have to look hard to find much on the subject.

I’m quite happy with the Nagoya 771G. As @Sshannon mentioned though it depends on what you want to use it for. The 771G is tuned for GMRS. I recently ordered the Nagoya NA-701G. It’s shorter than the 771 and I’ll be trying it out soon.

Has anyone tried the KG 1000M yet?
WRUU653 replied to Craws907's topic in Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS)
I personally have not. I’m sure it’s a good radio but it’s a lot to pay for only five channels maxed at 2 watts tx. I imagine it’s the same as the KG 1000G for rx. I wouldn’t say no if it was given to me though ? -
LOL!!! Beep ? Welcome WRWB509 ?
