  1. Is the input tone the same as the output on the repeater?
  2. You could try dropping the tones, maybe they aren’t up to date and are keeping you from hearing transmissions. As Sshannon said you don’t need them. I never bother with them on scanning frequencies.
  3. Got it. I got lost in the theory of what frequencies were receiving and transmitting and by what.
  4. Whyyyy wouldn’t FRS listen on 15?
  5. I clicked on these, the first and third one say expired. It may be they are no longer used. Radio Reference isn’t always up to date. Some law agencies have moved to encrypted frequencies. Just my thoughts, I can’t say for sure.
  6. I try not to be. I have also noticed that emojis in the text are no longer showing up. I had originaly typed some in but they seem to all be blue question marks now so I edited them out. I noticed this in other peoples post as well. I'm on a Mac. is this happening for others as well?
  7. Okay I got to jump in here as I just tried to give a “like” on another thread after leaving a thanks here for Steve and nope! Ionically I’m over my limit for the day!
  8. I would think it depends on what you consider good. For me that means less traffic and as MichaelLAX pointed out more possible watts if needed. Really whatever comes in good and is open to communication to whoever you are communicating with.
  9. Here is what I ended up with on my UV-9G. It is close to what is shown in the link Lscott posted but a bit different. I found this to work good for me but you may find your radio and area a little different. You'll notice I set my GT-3WP (same radio but HAM) a little different as they seemed to behave a little differently. I first came to do this because I noticed The UV-9G would always show reception even when no one was keying up from a local repeater that is close by and that wasn't happening on my GT-3WP even though they were exactly the same settings out of the box. I also noticed if I was monitoring that repeater on B and something else on A, that B always saw the repeater as active I wasn't ever hearing anything on A. Having two radios really helps when diagnosing issues. I just played around with settings to quite out the noise in my area while scanning and to give myself some room to play with. The first one is UV-9G, Second is GT-3WP...
  10. I don’t have a ham ticket and have wondered about this very question. I live in an area that seems to have more Ham traffic but I wouldn’t say it’s excessive. About five frequencies if you include the PAPA repeater south of me seem to get some use that I have noticed. A small amount of traffic on GMRS with a few repeaters. One is about 4 miles from me and has great coverage. The Hams here seem respectful and from the traffic I hear a lot of them also have their GMRS license and may be responsible for a couple GMRS repeaters (thank you). I just figured people who like radios like radios… I appreciate marcspaz taking the time to share his experience and perspective to give some insight on how some Hams may have gravitated towards GMRS.
  11. Thanks for the info Radioguy7268. I had a friend a couple years ago try to get me into crypto over breakfast. I was a no go on that. Reminded me of the time waaay back in high school when one of my teachers pitched me the Amway pyramid. ?
  12. Well this looks like it will be fun to follow. My first thought is repeaters of course but then I thought it may be something more absurd like another government agency that has placed weather monitoring stations or something like that…
  13. Check out Ten Mile 725. He says it’s a permission only closed system and sounds like he’s still dialing it in but may be worth the request especially since you are in the area you may have a better shot than tourist traffic.
  14. Great link Lscoctt! This was something I had to figure out for myself when I first started digging around in Chirp. Changing squelch settings in Chirp made a world of difference for my Baofeng UV-9G. Night and day.
  15. Ah yes thanks Sshannon, I do remember that now (bit foggy with a cold). Since he said mystery company I thought he might be referring to this… No company mentioned as of yet. I’ll be interested to see what comes out. On both counts. I don’t suppose it would do any good to send Randy one of my mechanical pencils? No I didn’t think so. ?
  16. If you’re talking about Randy’s upcoming mystery company he said it would be the same wattage as the Retevis RT97 which is 10 watts, effectively 5 on output. I think someone said Retevis was coming out with a higher wattage repeater at some point but hey apparently (as Randy has shown us) they lie sometimes. ?
  17. So it looks like Retevis RT91 amplifier compatible with RT97? Randy has his video up and something to say about that… I’ll let Randy take credit for posting the link. Go check it out. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone by giving it away. ? Thanks for addressing this Randy.
  18. Looks like it worked, nice Python reference ?
  19. Well you sure seem on the ball… don’t let anyone talk you into throwing in the towel. ?Cheers and welcome ?

    GET A NOD NUMBER

He does have a node number… I’m guessing that doesn’t necessarily mean he has connected to the network yet though. However last we heard from him he was asking how long to get a node number.

    GET A NOD NUMBER

It looks like Guest Randy is up and running. DELTA 1 : PITTSBURG, CA added in this weeks repeater update.
  22. I can't speak to this location or repeater but they have membership info here https://nggmrs.org. Are you hiking together? What kind of distance will you have between you? You may want to also carry something like an InReach Mini 2 for such a trip.
