Funny thing happened on the way to a weather frequency
WRUU653 posted a question in Technical Discussion
So I decided to see if any of the UHF weather frequencies that @Lscott posted came in near me and a funny thing happened. First I had no success with UHF weather frequencies in my area. No big deal there, I do receive them on VHF. I put in 410.000 on my KG-S88G and immediately received the local medical dispatch in my area, loud and clear. Here’s the thing they are on 463.000 and have no listing in the area on 410… So I grabbed my KG-935G Plus and put in 410.000 and nothing, not even a crackle. So I’m hearing it loud and clear on super het but nothing on SOC. I hear it just as good on both radios on the listed 463.000. So question, what is going on here? I mean it’s not a problem but I’m curious. My own theory is this, not far from our home is a location where one of the ambulances stages for response and I was wondering if the mobile radio to HT relay might be at play and I’m close enough to hear it. I don’t really know. Any thoughts? -
I’ll second getting to understand repeater programming. Go to the Mygmrs map and look for repeaters in your area. I would download Chirp for programming. That radio comes with a lot of preprogrammed scanner frequencies. Me personally, I would investigate which ones are really relevant to my area and note ones I might get rid of. When you get it, down load a back up untouched. I tend to do that every time I make changes in case I mess something up. Here are some tools that may help along the way. Looks like you chose a good radio enjoy. Chirp Radio Reference Line of Site Tool

A repeater that is linked on the network of other repeaters is a node on the network. As to should you link your repeater to the network? It depends if you want your repeater traffic on a large network or local. I personally would not but some do. I can’t speak to the process, I’m sure someone here can if that’s something you want to do.

It seems likely to me that many if not most of these grandfathered licenses have not been kept up and fallen by the wayside. That’s not to say that there aren’t businesses forging ahead without licenses. I just think that is the exception. Certainly FRS gets used out there like in construction or roadwork but as for GMRS I think it is not that prevalent. This is just my unsubstantiated opinion based on what I see and hear or rather don’t hear around me.

No need to be sorry, you didn’t know what you didn’t know. How else are you going to find out. The wheel may have been a little wobbly but others hit the accelerator and at the end of the day it’s just radios not brain surgery… wait what? You have a ham license? You b*#@*d!!! ? Just kidding of course 73’s

Another Baofang GM-15 PRO that will not program
WRUU653 replied to WRWU395's question in Technical Discussion
As mentioned by @Sshannon you are programming repeaters in the wrong location. So you won’t have the offset that is already on the repeater channels/frequencies in those locations. -
Another Baofang GM-15 PRO that will not program
WRUU653 replied to WRWU395's question in Technical Discussion
I would highly recommend choose one that works with Chirp. When first getting your feet wet with programming it is far easier. Once you grasp things better you can make better use of front loading the radios. IMO. changed my statement as I had missed that you were using proprietary software. My mistake. -
As @BoxCar stated I also would not recommend unlocking an amateur radio to access GMRS at 5 watts where you are or worse yet Murs frequencies and I certainly would not recommend the easily opened, waterproof Baofeng GT-3WP. I think my recommendation on record was the Garmin ?

Perhaps a Garmin Inreach explorer+ might suit your situation better.

Glad to help, I was hoping for more radio related content ?

I don't agree that a base station becomes a "fixed station" as defined by the FCC, although it is in a fixed location. The distinction being that a fixed station only communicates with other fixed stations. Fixed station. A station at a fixed location that directly communicates with other fixed stations only. a base station is just that Base station. A station at a fixed location that communicates directly with mobile stations and other base stations. I do however agree that once you use a base station through a repeater it then becomes a control station, which I beleave is the point you are making. Control station. A station at a fixed location that communicates with mobile stations and other control stations through repeater stations, and may also be used to control the operation of repeater stations.

Fixed station - what does that mean to FCC?

It was a valiant effort sir. For that I commend you.? -

I did a little digging thinking maybe something existed in the market place that would match the criteria of a fixed station using the frequencies being discussed here. So I searched for wireless intercoms and GMRS/FRS and I found a couple. Here's the thing, of the two I found they both used either Murs or business band UHF except for the Canadian market. I just thought this was interesting to the conversation. -
Haaaaa! ? you walked right into my joke. Couldn’t help yourself, gee thanks for correcting me. Obviously they don’t ? Uma Uma! ? but I really don’t get upset if it means something to someone else. My point wasn’t so much what you said but the way you said it… Don’t do this. Don’t do that. All caps. At the end of the day none of your points were against any FCC rules. You can explain proper protocol without dictating and ranting. A guest came here to ask a question and you ranted, still ranting. Fingers flying away on the keyboard. I don’t even disagree with most of what you say but man you sure want everyone to act according to your wishes. Don’t use phonetics but by god if you do don’t say Uma! ? my rules for radio are 1) don’t break FCC rules (2) be polite (3) if you break rule 1 don’t tell anyone (4)if you break 3 tell me (5) be polite All I’m saying is you seem upset and it’s not worth getting upset over. I hope you have a pleasant day. Speaking of ham, Happy Easter.

I know it’s confusing but it’s not on the forum site but the main site. Where the maps, repeater info is. Log on there and go to subscriptions.

So angry Oh the humanity, they did what? Aye aye sir. Ooooh I can’t wait ? please let it be you… Why do you care if he does? Even where you may be right you are coming in a little hot for such trivial things. IMO That’s just me though Whisky Romeo Uma Uma 653 ?
-
Let’s go with that. That’s a good first instinct.
-
My understanding is you need to log into your repeaters on the map site and it will update and it goes stale after the web page doesn’t see activity for a year.
-
I don’t think so but I would like to see this as an option. ?

Lol, Welcome David!
