Extreme Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 (edited) Any input or experience on this unit? Paired with Baofeng BF-F8HP. A pal bought the setup and I'll be programming his radios so curious, since I never heard of these amps before. I think he's planning on it for his CJ-6 with the Nagoya 771.Critique of both amp and HT welcome. I probably would have steered him in a different direction but wasn't consulted..lol.Oh, and is the F8HP FCC Part 97 certified? Thanks. Brain freeze, obviously should have read Part 95. ABTOCMEPTb Posted February 19, 2021 Report Posted February 19, 2021 I had a chance to conduct this test with one uv5r radio handheld and another uv5r connected to that amplifier. At 1.76 miles I was clearly heard by handheld while handheld transmission turned to gurgle. Quote
AdmiralCochrane Posted February 20, 2021 Report Posted February 20, 2021 When I first got my Tech, I made my first VHF contact with that exact set up. I think I was about 15 miles from the repeater. With a good, properly mounted antenna, you should be able to get 5 or 6 miles even in suburban-ish areas. I had trouble with the quality of the wire going to the back of the mic plug and the sma coax. Repaired and replaced multiple times. There are better ways to spend your money. Are you asking if the radio is certified for GMRS? No, its not Part 95 GMRS certified. Unless I am confused, there is no Part 97 certification. Hams can build whatever they want, only have to use them within their licensure. Extreme 1 Quote

And should I inform my buddy that he's also not compliant? He just bought a pair of these CCR for what he sees as a great deal and plans to set them up for local area repeaters and use them often off-road. I will encourage him to get GMRS licensed. Quote

BoxCar Posted February 21, 2021 Report Posted February 21, 2021 They market the radios under Part 97 (or more likely just broadcast the frequency range and don't worry about the FCC because they aren't within the FCC's jurisdiction). Quote

It does not help the future of GMRS when anyone in this community condones use of illegal equipment in any way, including, but not limited to, lending assistance to someone asking questions about use of equipment that is known to be illegal in the service. Yes, I am all about freedom, but freedom balanced with due respect of our laws. Just one man’s opinion. YMMV. MichaelWRHS965KE8PLM Elkhunter521, gortex2 and Extreme 3 Quote

timokirschner Posted September 1, 2021 Report Posted September 1, 2021 Related to the above topic I have a question about legality. Is it FCC compliant if I use a FCC compliant hand radio and (at home) use a 35 Watt amplifier to transmit on the high power GMRS channels with the aforementioned Btech AMP-25? I have a GMRS license. If you can find the FCC ID look it up and see what certifications it has, likely just Part 90. Quote
