100.000 GMRS licensees in the USA

As of April 14, 2021, the total number of GMRS licensees in the United States reached 100,000.  The increased interest in the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), and other forms of two-way radio, has resulted in a steady increase in new licenses issued by the FCC.  A GMRS license can be applied for online and requires no test.  When the new fee reduction goes into effect, more applications are expected.

To give a little more perspective, as of last Sunday, April 11th, the number of GMRS licenses stood at 99,237...

 

That is 763+ new licenses in less than a week!

I checked the FCC search engine. Today the license number stands at 100,320 (current GMRS licenses). Sorry, there's this reporter in me that double checks things for no plausible reason. The FCC media person couldn't provide historical figures. I guess they don't keep track by service, or at least don't for GMRS (code ZA if you're interested in doing a search on the website). It would be interesting to compare today's total to one, two and three years ago. Would make for an interesting article, especially if there was a significant spike as news of the pandemic spread. I bet ARRL has figures for ham licenses for the period.

Randy Knowles (KAA8142) reported on the weekly net last Sunday that in 1998 there were ~28,250 active licenses. We seem to have seen significant growth the past 23 years!

You can't get a count easily as there are two main groups, Public Safety ad Business/Industrial/Land Transportation or 90.20 ad 90.35. Then there's Part 101 ad several different parts that are used.
