Q - Once I have entered the right DTC/DCS/DPL tone of:  D023 for this repeater, does it remain in memory after I turn the unit off?

Assuming you entered them on that channel, then, yes. That channel is now programmed for Ranchino.

Thanks for all the help Saturday OffRoaderX!
Is Ranchino the appropriate name for this Haven Peak repeater?
Or is it known by another more common name locally?
I'm diving into Chirp, where I feel more comfortable visualizing all the settings and channels  cuz Im a tech geek!

Guess I didnt properly enter and save the settings for the repeater at 462.6000 as that line in Chirp showed nada for the Tone or DTCS columns.

Is this correct for Chirp?:

I see DTCS and 023, and I heard you hitting the repeater, so I'd say it is correct.

Is there a comprehensive list of all the repeaters and channels used in the San Gabriel, San Bernardino, Cleveland, and other Mountains, high and low deserts.  Thinking stuff any off-roader or overlander would want for our area and neighboring areas?

This site actually has the best list of repeaters around. There's also a map that will show you the repeaters all around you. If you go to the menu up at the top, click on map, it will pull the map right up for you.

Good evening mygmrs'ers!

With respect to Chirp and the various column settings using the Tremont Ranch Open Repeater as an example, below are the published settings here on mygmrs:

Would this be correct settings for that repeater in Chirp?:

Do I need a tone squelch or duplex setting here?  Some column settings here seem mutually exclusive, meaning fill one out and it blanks others.  Learning slowly but surely.

Thanks again for all the help past and present gentlemen!

First, a caveat.  I don’t have the GMRS version of the UV5R.  I have the regular old one.

Does the GMRS version automatically do the repeater offset or do you need to include a 5 MHz offset in the column marked offset, like you did for Ranchino?

It did so automatically!

Is the Tone Out setting of 100MHz for this Tremont Repeater in the top pic the same as the Chirp setting for Tone Squelch?  Do I need to add 100.0 for the Tone Squelch in Chirp?

If you choose Tone, only the transmit tone is important. Your radio will let all transmissions it receives through, regardless of the tone or lack of tone.
If you change it to Tone Squelch, then your radio will only reproduce the audio from radios that exactly match the tone.
I recommend not using Tone Squelch until you have a better understanding of how it works.
Your transmissions still must match the input tone required by the repeater.

  • 1 year later...

Sorry for the necro-thread, but I just got my GMRS license over the weekend, and I'm in Riverside as well.

From the map on the main site, seems like Rancho might be a bit far for us, but there's others out there that are within range according to the map. I've got requests in for the following:

City of Hemet 650

Daniel Peak Hemet 550

Redlands 650

Those seem to have the coverage in our area and are non-club (aka: paid). The Redlands and Hemet coverage seems to overlap, but I'm assuming they have different RX/TX and/or offsets?

Have you tried to see if you can get a response from the Ranchino repeater? (I think it is the only one you mentioned that has the input tone publicly listed.)

The others.. I guess you will just have to wait for their permissions to get the input tones.

I can say that the Mesa Crest club (which yes it costs a very small fee) is well worth it... great coverage and good people on it. They also have a repeater on Santiago Peak as well as their main one.

Good luck and welcome to the world of GMRS.

Offsets are all the same for all GMRS repeaters. always +5 and that is just built into the certified GMRS radio's repeater channels. But yes, the repeaters on the same frequency will use their own input and output tone so you can communicate to and listen to only one at a time.

I've input the Ranchino one and sent traffic.  My radio lit up like it was receiving, showed the antenna on the screen, but zero bars and no audio.

Using a Baofeng UV-82HP

That can happen if you have tone squelch turned on and with the wrong tone. You can check by pushing the MONI button.
Turn off the tone for receiving (or set tone mode to “Tone” rather than TSQL).

Ranchino should be
Receive on 462.600    023   DPL Output (TR)
Transmit on 467.600    023   DPL Input (TX)

Since the Baofeng UV-82HP is not a GMRS certified radio it might not be doing the proper +5 offset for transmit? But I have never used one so... Not sure.

All of this is correct on my radio. Offset is set at +5. When I hit the PTT, I do see 467. When I let go, it goes back to 462.

I think I'm just out of range. I should also add that I'm doing this from inside my house, so there's likely already a lot of interference for a handheld, even with the Abbree antenna. I do get a two-tone hi-low beep when I release the PTT.
