Chirp Program Terminology

I’m programming some local repeaters to a Baofeng uv-9g with chirp. 
Trying to enter CTCSS  codes. Using “Tone Mode”, “Tone”, and “Tone Squelch” options. I choose “Tone” in the Tone Mode dropdown and then set the tone to 141.3. I figured out this is for the TX CTCSS code however I’m not seeing a way to enter the RX CTCSS tones. When I select 141.3 as the tone squelch (which is what I assume is the RX CTCSS setting), it removes 141.3 under “Tone”.

This will transmit 141.3 and only listen for signals with 141.3.

If you want to hear everything and only transmit the tone to open the repeater, do this...

In the early days of CHIRP, it would not help you as it does now.  When I went a long while not using it because i had no need for it, CHIRP Next came out and it frustrated the hell out of me just like the OP on this.  Set one, set the other, removed the last.... AHH!

 

Oh, now its smarter.

I can say this got me at first too, but I set all my repeater sets to tone, and today I did get my first hit once I was within range. It worked well, they said I came through "full quiet"  or something like that where my voice was clear and no background noise. I have not went into the radio to review what it looks like in there, but I set the chirp just like those pics above show and it works like a charm. I can hear others talk on that repeater from my house, but my handheld doesn't have enough juice to reach out.

Cross Mode

This field controls the squelch behavior of the channel when the Tone Mode is set to Cross. Each value consists of two technologies separated by an arrow (->). The value to the left of the arrow controls the selective-call method used on transmit, while the one to the right of the arrow controls the receive squelch. The possible values are:

  • Tone: CTCSS tones are used. Transmit tone is taken from the Tone column, receive tone from the ToneSql column.
  • DTCS: DTCS/DCS codes are used. Transmit code is taken from the DTCS Code column, receive code from the DTCS Rx Code column.

The Cross Mode field allows addressing more commercial modes of squelch operation, such as using different tones or codes for transmit and receive. For example:

  • Tone->Tone: This means use the Tone value for transmit tone, and the ToneSql value for receive squelch
  • Tone->DTCS: This means use the Tone value for transmit tone, and the DTCS Rx Code value for receive squelch
  • DTCS->Tone: This means use the DTCS Code value for transmit code, and the ToneSql value for receive squelch
  • ->Tone: This means do not transmit a Tone or DTCS Code, but use the ToneSql value for receive squelch
  • ->DTCS: This means do not transmit a Tone or DTCS Code, but use the DTCS Rx Code value for receive squelch
  • DTCS->: This means use the DTCS Code value for transmit code, and receive squelch is open or carrier-triggered
  • DTCS->DTCS: This means use the DTCS Code value for transmit code, and the DTCS Rx Code value for receive squelch

I think who ever wrote the Chirp program made it way too complicated. The program should have been better written and easier for the beginning radio enthusiasts. All they need to do is just have a pull down menu to select for each tone. Chirp is stupid.

I bet you already do!

Part of what makes Chirp useful, but also sometimes difficult to understand, is that it has to store information for hundreds of different radios in a kind of least-common denominator database. Once you understand that you can program all of those radios.

His mind is made up and cannot be changed by facts. And like a number of folks here, he lives to berate. Personally, I like Chirp. It's way better than any of the free software that came with any of my radios. And being free and all, it's considerably cheaper than RT Systems.

Here are the radios I own:

Motorola Portables - HT1000, MT2000, MTS2000, VISAR, ASTRO SABER, XTS1500, XTS2500, XTS5000, and DTR700.

Motorola Mobiles - MCS2000, XTL2500, and XTL5000

Kenwood Mobile - TK880-1

Midland Mobile - MXT500

I doubt that any of these radios can be programmed with Chirp. I know there are a few Kenwoods that can be programmed with Chirp but I don't think the TK880s can be.

I have several rifles that use Magpul 5.56 magazines.  How dare the 9mm magazines do not work on those rifles, therefore, the 5.56 is not valid.

You use what works for what you need.
