Not one reported DB20-G/AT-779UV cigarette lighter plug melting to the date of this post...

Nor will they. Instead of moaning about it on a forum, it's easier to send the radio back to Amazon for replacement or cut it off and hook it up like it supposed to be in the first place.😀

Why would it melt though? It draws roughly 6amps through a receptacle that can provide 10?

Generally a poor connection or impurities in the "copper". A poor connection increases resistant, which generates heat.

Higher resistance also limits the current. I don’t believe that there have been many (if any) cigarette lighter plugs on db20g radios that have melted.

As for the DB20, I have to bash it for having that stupid cigarette lighter plug on it. Just cut the damn thing off.

Did that when I put the RA87 in the truck and moved the DB20G into the shack. Sits right atop the Yaesu FT-450D just fine! Haven't look at Jailbreaking it yet, but monitors 2m/440 hams bands just fine for now and gets on on Simplex with the local ragchewers on Ch. 18 just fine.

You see... that's the problem in this country:

You give someone a "choice" and they make their choice; and then THEY want to force their "choice" on everyone, claiming: "like it supposed to be in the first place!"

Tell me about it. This all started pre-internet with traffic circles and 4-way intersections with stop signs. The majority of Americans don't have the mental capacity to properly use them. Same with GMRS and other radio services, too many choices. back in the day when GMRS first started you did your research and figured out what frequency you wanted to use and ordered your crystals from Jan Crystal and you were happy. Now with all the choices we have the forum is in chaos with the complexity of what channel and tones to use.

When *I* was a boy, we had to smack together quartz crystals we dug up ourselves to send radio signals.  And we could only receive by hanging a cable on a tree and holding it with our tongues!

These damned kids, with their "electricity" and "antennas" are too lazy and stupid to be allowed to have radio!

Man, I thought I had it rough as a kid. We had to grind our own reeds to make PL tones. Can't beat the old Vibrasender/Vibrasponders. I'm glad I missed the era of the cat whisker.

Hello, I am new to this Forum and to GMRS. Is this radio a dual band GMRS and Ham radio 2 meter too? Thanks

Expand

On startup it can be configured as either GMRS or wide ranges of frequencies, including ham, but when you do all the memories are wiped out.  As it ships it can only do GMRS, in compliance with regulations.

Yes, depending upon the configuration picked it can receive and transmit on GMRS/MURS, Ham 2 meters and 440 MHz, too.  GMRS and MURS have FCC regulations which require specific FCC approval for radios used to transmit on these frequencies and this radio does not have this type approval for MURS.

I think you probably intended to say the db20g wasn’t certified for MURS. It is certified for 95E, GMRS, as shipped.

The FCC disagrees with you.

EDIT: To @SteveShannon's point above, it's Part 95E authorized (GMRS), but not Part 95J (MURS)

I looked at the DB20G.. but decided to go with the DB25G ... smaller, more power, more channel slots to display on the screen, and the 25 is supported by Chirp but the 20 is not for some reason.

Expand

The DB20G also wasn’t supported by RT Systems until just a few weeks ago, but now it is and it works very well!  I would suspect Chirp support will follow.

I don't really see how it would melt anything,.. Drawing a RATED current through a receptacle. And with it, it makes an actual 18-19 watts.

People are mad at this radio only because they paid 3x for something else and don't even get 1.5x the results.

New here.  Decided to look at reviews as a starting point in equipment selection.  This is one of the first reviews listed.  Read through it and have a simple question.  For a "first" radio in my truck, is this a decent place to start?  Not looking for the most powerful/technologically advanced radio, just a good starting point.

Yes it is.  Watch for sales at Radioddity.  You should be able to pick up a db20g for less than $90.

Purchased 3 of them: First the clone Anytone AT-779UV, then the DB20-G, then another DB20-G to replace one stolen, and...

Then the DB25-D to get virtually the same mini-mobile with DMR on the 2 Meter and 440 MHz Ham bands.

Steve, I apologize for my ignorance here:  What is/are RT Systems?  I'm guessing that's a radio programming software suite?  Thanks...just lurking/figuring out what mobile radio I want to buy.  I'm leaning towards the DB-20G as a less expensive alternative to get started with.

Thanks.

Cheeers,

Bill
