Equally important IMO is we need some antibiotics available w/o Rx.  The government has no constitutional authority to control our access to medicine anyway.

If we didn't learn our lesson with all this during the COVID fiasco we never will. China should be the world supplier cheap trinkets and other toys, not medicine and food. We need to get our priorities straight before it's to late.

I just spoke with a large radio importer/reseller based here in the U.S. (i cant say who) - He said his tariff fees are based on the wholesale price (not 'calculated value' at the port of entry, as I thought/read about) - because the new fees would nearly double the retail price, and he knows he cant sell any at those prices, he has halted all new radio shipments..

i dont like it but I am willing to feel a little short-term pain for longer-term trade equity...

I'm sure I also read that it was at the port of entry, although I don't remember where I read it.

Same here. I can live with the radios I have for a few years. However, I don't think China will hold out very long. The US is THE big market, purchasing 35% of all goods that are traded internationally. Simply put, without the US market, they'll go broke.

Here is a video showing what Icom has stated on tariffs. According to the video, Icom won't start charging customers for the tariffs until May 8th.

ICOM Radios SLAMMED with Tariffs!

I'll let everyone watch the video and make their own decisions and opinions afterwards.

Icoms are made in Japan so that would involve a total differnt tariff fee then China..  Japan has made a deal with the U.S. on trad but i dont know those detials, defiantly better than China due to all this retaliatory crap goijng on

Chinese made importer/reseller?   I woiuld think the retaliatory fees going to make things a lot worse for China imported items.

According to this article and this article, tariff fees are paid at the point of entry. Thus, they are not assessed on the wholesale price, because that reflects costs associated with getting the product to the retailer in addition to the cost of the item itself. One thing interesting to note is that both articles state that the countries the US is imposing tariffs upon already have tariffs on US goods, usually higher than what the president is raising them to.

That is what I thought.. But this guy is there, on the front lines - this is his (big) business/profession, and that's what he's telling me.

Right or wrong, he's stopped importing - and i guarantee many on this forum are going to notice.

I may be wrong, but isn't every new OTC GMRS radio manufactured outside of the US?

Except China has already proven they will export to a different country and have stuff imported from there to the US.

Remember, China has been falsifying ISO certs for decades. Heck I was literally burned by substandard construction materials.

That reminds me. I've traveled extensively in the past for company business. In at least one country you could walk in and buy ampicillin, a powerful antibiotic,  over the counter. Even more shocking was how cheap it was.

My personal opinion is we pay such a high price here for our med's just so the drug companies can sell the same thing elsewhere cheaply as a foreign policy of the US.

I don't doubt that's what he said, but either he's using "wholesale" in a different sense than I understand it, or he has misunderstood tariffs. When they've taken effect, he may discover that it isn't going to be as bad as he thinks. I hope that's the case. If a major importer stops importing, no doubt the consumers will notice.

My last job was at a pharmaceutical distribution center. That company bought directly from the manufacturers and sold to the different pharmacies and hospitals. The company sold everything to the different pharmacies and hospitals for the exact same price. Yet you could go to 5 different pharmacies and there would be 5 different prices for the same thing. And it's common to be able to get medicine cheaper without using your insurance versus using insurance.

The company I worked for actually took a loss per item but sold in a large enough volume to still make a profit. The pharmacies and the insurance companies have a definite effect on the prices of medicine.

I was just the lowly maintenance technician so I didn't have anything to do with how the business ran.

But not 'all' from China..  some and maybe the higher end are manufactured in S Korea, Japan, Taiwan and even Vietnam..   Unless China comes to a level fair ground with tariffs,  i'm betting Baufang figures out a way to manufacture from one of these countries.    Exactly what is happening with the Laser Hobby world

I actually worked on a network design for an installation at a Genentech site many years ago..   Not saying where, but i can tell you that place would blow your mind.   When you see the measures they take when doing bio tech research, it would scare the hell out of you when you realize this is done basically in our back yards

The company I worked for ran distribution centers and also made dispensing machines for pharmacies and hospitals. They did other stuff too, but I was not involved with any of that.
