    Simplex Repeaters

There is such a thing as a simplex repeater that is fairly cheap and simple, but...... This is not for socializing or that kind of thing like duplex repeaters. It is intended for emergency comms or remote areas like a hunting camp or something. Maybe you would use it for special event with a club - for essential or emergency communications only. https://www.argentdata.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=98 It is not clear to me whether the law specifically addresses these for use on GMRS. I did not find a definitive answer. Definitely check further if you are considering it seriously. This is a clever audio accessory that you can interface to just about any radio. People (who are licensed) use them on ham bands and you can use the same device with various radios as long as you get the right cable. You do not use a "repeater channel" with split frequency operation... there is no offset. It all happens on the same frequency. You use a normal simplex channel. You interface this to a radio that you place on high ground in your area of operation. Maybe you park a vehicle equipped with it on a hill above the area you are hunting. The "repeater" radio will repeat every message that it hears - delayed in time. So you will hear yourself on "the repeater" after you are done talking. If you are within "direct" range of another talker you will hear him twice - once direct and once on the repeater. Obviously this is a rather "clunky" (but clever) system intended for essential communications in remote areas. It is of very limited use but for certain situations it could be real a life saver. Of course, do not even consider buying one of these unless you FULLY understand exactly how it is used. Also, of course, you would need to be sure they are completely legal for GMRS. I did not find a clear answer. Even so, I would only consider using it "in the middle of nowhere" for special situations like hunting camps. So, do not go and buy one of these and put it up at home thinking your are going to have a "real" repeater for hanging out with your friends. That's not what it is. It's just a curiosity for most of us. I think it's "wicked" clever.... but I'm probably not going to buy one. Vince

  4. Wouxun KG-805G Stopped RX-ing/TX-ing after using CHIRP. Hi everybody, I received my Wouxun KG-805G three days ago from BuyTwoWayRadios.com. It is a great small radio. Sound quality is great. I downloaded and installed Wouxun factory software and programmed the radio. Everything was working fine. Then yesterday, after reading multiple posts on this forum where some people said that they used CHIRP and 816 profile to program 805G, I tried to do that. After uploading file from CHIRP to 805G this happened: All voice commands switched to Chinese language. Radio stopped transmitting and receiving. Display shows that it transmits, but my GMRS-V1 doesn’t get any signal on the same channel. And when I transmit from V1, 805G does not get anything. Then I used factory software and their default codeplug file to restore 805G, but it did not help. I called BuyTwoWayRadios.com customer services and described everything. They said that this was problem between CHIRP and 805G, and that this was not warrantable. I search Internet and found post from October 2020 in this thread: https://forums.radioreference.com/threads/wouxun-kg-805g.414204/ Quote from that thread: It looks like I am stuck with $80 brick. Any suggestion appreciated.

    DMR

I've pulled my hair out fighting with the radio programming software for the Anytone D878UV DMR radio. The worse part of the radio is the user programming software, it sucks. There are features that plainly don't work as expected. Some they fix in the next revision, then the revision after that it's buggered up again. I've grown tired of sending off bug reports to their tech support guy in China. There has been two updates since the last one I did on the radio and I have little motivation to screw around with to see what is mucked up this time with the current update. The scan lists is one of those that bugs me since I do a lot of scanning with my radios. It just so happens than when you start a scan the currently selected memory channel is included in the scan even if it is NOT in the scan list. I was told by Anytone support this is NOT a bug. They claim people want to revert back to the channel when a scan is stopped, OK, but there is no reason to include it either. If the channel is a very busy one you likely don't want to stop every time there is activity on it. VERY annoying. There is a sort of half a**ed way to work around it but it should be required.

  7. It will be easier to use channel mode instead For example: Say your repeater is on 462.600 Arrow to REPT17 Say the CTCSS on both input & output is 100.0 Press Menu, then up arrow until you see R-CTCS OFF, press menu again, up arrow until you see 100.0 HZ, press menu to confirm Up arrow to T-CTCS OFF, press menu again, up arrow until you see 100.0 HZ, press menu to confirm You should now be set up to use the repeater The radio will automatically know the receive & transmit frequencies and you have manually entered the CTCS tones If the the repeater uses split different tones for input & output, the steps are the same, just select the tones that you need

    New Guy, Twin Falls Idaho

I am working to get my machine back up and running sometime in the next week or two. I had an antenna that would have worked just fine at over 1000 feet above average terrain. The problem is that I have no real gain to get out from the repeater's current low level. I guess I'll just have to see how well it gets out once I get it back on the air, hopefully this weekend or next.

  11. It would also be a moot point if an asteroid blew the planet to smithereens, however power goes out 99.999% of the time for reasons other than emp's and extinction level asteroids.
