  1. A clearer and more strictly enforced line drawn between the "general" and "technical" forums might serve that purpose. It seems kinda scatter shot sometimes with where people post what. Not a reflection on the forum though, just the posters.

  2. 99.9% of the time, simplex will be used with carrier squelch, not tones at all.

    Reliable connection!!

Thank you both for the advisement!! And I'm sorry for the late response, but I would try to move the antenna to a higher position, I will try a different kind of cable and use a short piece of coaxial in order to check the communication. I'm already order online a new SWR tester, so I will be able to see where is the problem. I used to be a VHF radio user in another country, and let me tell you that Im impressed with the range of signal of the VHF, and I only operated a pair of Yaesu H.T. and a 25w. Vertex as a base and I covered a big distance with no problem. With those devices I could easily cover the whole city in VHF, but GMRS looks to be a weak radio signal, even if you have a 40 or 50 watts base. It looks like you have to live in a building near to the top of the building and mount the antenna at the rooftop of the building in order to have a "reliable connection" between your base and the mobile devices. Once again, thank you very much for your answers and advisement.

  4. There are “export” radios that do AM, FM and SSB now. Not legal on 11M but the engineering is already done. Just restrict the frequencies to the legal 40 channels and power limits the manufacturers are all set.

  5. You can already do that, buy all Kenwood, use a LTR system and turn on FleetSync, and buy a dispatch console. $$$"

  6. I had similar symptoms due to interference from my reverse camera signal wire. I found the delayed transmit especially strange. Almost like a BCL but not.

  7. The place with the helpful hardware folks sells small sheets of sheet steel. I picked up a piece 2' x2' for less than $15 there.

  8. Following back up on this thread. I thought the replacement mic had made things better, but alas, a weekend trip with my local Jeep club proved that this radio has a lot of problems. The most persistent issue is the static and popping that I mentioned earlier. Another issue is that it sometimes doesn't start transmitting for 3 to 5 seconds after I key the mic! Other times it begins transmitting very quietly, then goes to full gain. When I got home I tested some scenarios with HTs: • I tried changing the power lead, re-routing directly to the battery. No improvement • Tried two different antennas but same coax. Same problem with both. • I used a mag mount antenna with different coax – no improvement. My last and final test was to install a spare radio (A Radioddity DB20-G) using the same power and antenna connections as the ones giving me problems with the Wouxun. The radio operates without static, pops, or noise on the transmissions, confirming that the problem follows the Wouxun KG1000G and not another variable. Luckily BTWR has EXCELLENT customer service (I mean really, really good!) and they responded to my email within an hour or two and sent me a return shipping label so that they can test the radio. I'm sending it back to them this week.

You may also search this forum for Ed Fong antenna. Some people like them, some do not. I do not.

  10. I’ll add my two cents just in case it could help. Depending on the type of farming the OP operates, if you have grain silos the repeater antenna (along with any other necessary equipment) could be mounted on top of the highest point. This would eliminate the need for the added expense of a tower or extension pole mast. The repeater itself (enclosed in the appropriate weather proof housing) could possibly be mounted close by which would shorten your feed line requirements. I’m sure the OP was hoping for a simple reply with a simple solution (since no experience and little knowledge of communication equipment), unfortunately it’s a little more complicated (isn’t that the truth for life in general ?). All suggestions made have their merit. Hopefully the OP and anyone else that reads this post will be able to take away enough information to allow them to choose the option that best works for their needs. JC

  11. I run P25. It keeps the CCR radios off my repeater and for the most part is only used by folks who want a real radio system. I can't deal with static and dropped calls all the time.

  12. If you are using a RX code, the person you want to hear has to use the same TX code. I think the best analogy is to think of the RX tone as a gate, and the tx tone as the key. No tones is like leaving the gate wide open, anyone can come in. If you want to get in when the gate is locked (RX tone set), you have to bring the right key (tx tone). If you want to hear everything on the frequency when working simplex, you can just use no codes on either rx or tx. (The gate is open, so no key needed). Does that make it a little clearer?

    Legal radio

Pretty badass radio... its a Part 90 radio. Just keep it and use it for GMRS. It will serve you well... certainly a great starter radio over the CCR garbage. G.

    Legal radio

Ok, pulled two UHF ID's, Both have a GC of K44, The first is 431200 and the second is 431201. Both have certification for part 22, 74, and 90. While it is not part 95E certified, as long as you do not run digital or encryption and you keep the power levels within legal limits you should be fine to use this radio.
