    HAM Forum

Here in Cincinnati there have been two new young people that I know of that have joined the ham ranks recently. Ages 10 and 11. Both appear to have been mentored by their grandfathers. On 2m they operate like pros. Listening and talking to them is a joy. I can imagine the joy you feel watching and listening to your GD on the radio. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

  3. If you have prime it should be 20% off of that and show $87.99. That's what it is showing me now.

  4. Wow, let's ask for help and then slander someone that is trying help... How quickly one shows their true colors when faced with a challenge. WTFAY!?! What a piece of work, shame on you... maybe it's because either you clearly have no clue of what you're doing and have such thin skin that someone asking you to be transparent has triggered a plethora of insecurities, and/or you have some type of personality disorder. Either way, calling someone a troll, that you don't even know, is highly disrespectful! Since I've been a member, I've seen Michael help many people here and out in the community, especially noobies like me. His post speak for themselves (I suggest you read them and everyone else, for that matter, before passing judgement and slandering someone else's name). Michael is eager to share his many years of experience, both as a amateur radio and gmrs operator. What have you contributed? Michael's knowledge in things Mac, Windows, and others computer/radio related matters has been evident in his proficiency through assisting others within the radio community (again, not just me saying this, but read the many posts for yourself). Personally, Michael has gone out of way to help me work around many radio and programming issues and I'm sure others can attest to the same thing. So feel feel to "ignore" me as well, "mr.engineer", because I'm sure "on air" or off, you don't deserve anymore of my time or another stroke from the keys on my Dell.

    Linking a private Net?

Sure can, there are several ways to do this. 1) The linking bundle provided by myGMRS.com (https://shop.mygmrs.com/collections/repeaters-and-accessories/products/repeater-linking-bundle ) is quite capable of this with a few modifications to rpt.conf and iax.conf you’ll be on your way. 2) Allstarlink has a download page using the ASL image for the RaspberryPi. In your situation I would consider the v1.01, and follow instructions from the ASL website links etc. 3) I would suggest the myGMRS route due to the complexity of Linux, and Rich went through great lengths to keep it clean, and LEGAL! 6. Thank you for sharing. May get another DB20-G myself. Bought one a month ago and it works great. Really does put out 20 watts, and works very well on both VHF and UHF. GMRS use has been great. Being so small, it fits newer vehicles well too.

  7. I just checked and it's $87.99 for me too. That's a bit better than the ~$100 price on their website.

    Shorten or not?

    No. Just leave the cable.

  9. One of the towers out here (that hosts utilities and various levels of public safety, in addition to ham repeaters) is currently fighting through the post fire rebuild process...despite assurance from the county that everything would be allowed to be rebuilt to pre-fire state, they've disallowed an extension that was approved and added, and are letting the neighbors (that came after the tower) shove in their objections and roadblocks to rebuilding at all

  10. You're also going to need FAA clearance being that tall. I'd recommend getting a consultant like Steel in the Air to do a feasibility study. They can give you a realistic idea of what the market is in your general area, what the going price is for cellular, and they can also tell you about any local towers that might be your market competition for leases. If it's all owned by American Tower or Crown Castle, you've probably got some room to maneuver and get under their pricing. There's an aspect of "if you build it, they will come" - but most people building new towers have one or two carriers in their pocket, meaning they're guaranteed some income right from the start and they won't go broke if they don't load the tower to full capacity within a year or two. Most of the cellular carriers aren't interested in huge coverage areas any more. 4G and 5G start to drop their data speeds once you get more than a few miles out. I'd be surprised if they're interested in going any higher up than 150 -200 ft. Not sure what the zoning is like in your area, but I'd want to have a conversation with whoever is in charge and take their temperature before you commit to anything. I've seen zoning stuff add years to a build timeline. Especially if you need to get lawyers involved. 40 years ago, it wasn't too hard to put up a tower where you wanted it. Now, it's hard enough to put up a tall tower at all, let alone put it where you actually want/need it. Good luck with it.

  11. Not all CCR’s are complete junk. The original model D878UV I have is an alright radio. Is it the equivalent of a higher end Motorola, Kenwood, ICOM etc., no but it gets the job done I wanted it for and didn’t break the bank. The later models I question if the performance and features justify the significantly higher prices, which I don’t think they do. People use to laugh at Japanese electronics, like the current Chinese stuff, but they got better and higher quality. The Chinese radios will likely do the same sooner or later. If you start looking at test equipment designed and manufactured in China you quickly find out it isn’t junk and the higher end stuff is really causing manufacturers like Techtronics and Keysight (spin-off of of the old HP) headaches in the low to mid-tier equipment range.

    HF bands

I have been in this position for a while now, having a Technician class amateur license and Restricted license (as well as GROL) for vessel and aircraft......keep wishing I had stayed for the next test. However, where I took the test,I did not exactly want to stick around much longer.....there were definitely some "personalities" at my testing location. I run into some of them from time to time, me working in commercial radio, with a little public safety related, and many amateurs wanting to assist but not wanting to put the time in for organized drills. Good luck on your tests, and actually using radios. I know many that have the license that never transmit, they just wanted a piece of paper to put on the wall.

    Wouxun KG-1000 G

BTW, something to keep an eye on as you evaluate your KG-1000G radios is a changing audio level issue. Since I obtained my radio early this year I have had multiple people report that periodically the audio level will change dramatically during a transmission. Not consistently, but randomly, and seemingly without regard to speaking level or proximity to the mic. It occurs most frequently (but not always) at the beginning of a transmission. As the person transmitting I have not been able to experience this in normal use. However, having recently played with a simplex repeater module connected to the 1000G in my shack I can now confirm that the issue is real. When the issue occurs It sounds like the radio is going into full audio compression and then gradually ramps back up to normal. Very annoying for any listening party. If anyone else has similar experiences, I would like to hear about them. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM

    Wouxun KG-1000 G

There is no ability to change the color nor brightness of the display in the manufacturer’s software or via the radio that I have found. I have only confirmed the ability to change the colors of the little LED located beside the channel knob. I have yet to hear of any firmware updates being offered to update any of model of Wouxun GMRS radios. I too wish that were possible as it would make to possible to remediate short-comings. As best I recall, BTWR said even they have no means to update firmware in a Wouxun radios. If anyone has new information to share on the subject I would love to hear about it. Michael WRHS965 KE8PLM
